Suggestion....fill a tray, and i mean FILL, with shredded cardboard and place on the bottom. This will get innoculated with microbial life with the liquid that seeps down and it will also start the decomposition process. It becomes your next feeding tray. When all 4 trays are being used tray 1 is, obviously, the feeding tray, tray 2 is the ‘next harvest’ tray, and trays 3 & 4 are bedding trays that become future feeding trays. This is an excellent rotation system which will guarantee a harvest every 2-3 months depending on your worm population which will grow over time. Always add new dry bedding underneath the food to build up the volume of the tray. Your worms will turn that bedding into castings. Good luck with the vermicomposting!

Hiya i know its been 2 years however ive a question if you could help. I noticed your boxes stack inside each other rather than on top. Did this cause any problems with compacting the soil in the middle tray or are they best stacked on top

Hi Geoff, I’m pretty certain the boxes need to be stacked on top of each other in this way so that the worms can reach the next box layer of food scraps. I think when adding an extra layer you should scoop up some of the below material and place in the box above so they have something familiar to crawl into. It does not cause compaction from what I have noticed. Hope that helps 👍🏽

Those look like European Nightcrawlers and they really really like brown cardboard. Ou don’t need to add so much wet food, that’s why there is so much fluid in the sump and the castings are too damp. I bet it gets really hot and humid in that system with that much food. Maybe in the hot weather keep it uncovered or just partially covered with cardboard to get lots of airflow? Also, you only need to sprinkle a little of the dried worm chow in, especially with so little worms. It gets hot (hot composting) and the worms hate that. Also next time you do a bin, don’t add worms to it for at least a week. The worms need the bacteria, fungi, nematodes to multiply in the new bin. Worms eat the bacteria, fungi, nematodes-and they feed on the food.

Thanks for your input Marlene. My wormery is still going great with the approach I’m taking. It’s in a shaded spot so no overheating. I cover with plastic bin liner when it gets rainy. So doesn’t get too much fluid in the sump. Working perfectly fine. These are also definitely tiger worms 🪱 😊

Isn't the spout at the bottom supposed to be left open for air flow. I seen another video that said to keep it open with a cup underneath so moisture could drain. Don't they need ventilation and air live?

someone said only use the liquid to water plants and trees and dont use on vegetables. is that true?
@MrShmugan4 жыл бұрын
Hi, thanks for your comment. I've not heard of this. I've personally not used the liquid on my allotment as I keep my wormery at home for my back garden. But I'm pretty certain it's very good for fruit and vegetables as long as you dilute with rain water ratio 1:10 depending on wormery liquid concentration. The liquid has lots of micro organisms which enrich the soil. Happy soil = Happy plants :)

@@MrShmugan Just something somone said on another wormery vid but I cant find any other info to back it up. Good vid. Cheers

Absolutely not true, unless you were using the worm bin to compost something like dog waste.

The only thing that is a tiny bit true about that is, like any manure, I wouldn't put it on veggies that you are going to harvest soon, and apply it to the soil around the plant, not the plant itself.

The more I see of these stacked trays the more I feel like that expensive bin from New Zealand is the best way to go. No playing with trays and disturbing the worms. Just set it up and wait. Only issue is the cost but I really think these trays require too much manipulation and the spigot looks like ground zero for anaerobic dystopia
