One thing I do sometimes while building is to throw the looper on the front. Play a progression into it and let it go while you play with the settings. It lets you get a good sense of how the tweaks are impacting your tone with a consistent sample. Just delete when you're done ...

I got the following info from somewhere, and I use it to set the amp sounds how I like; it makes a massive difference! Hope it helps someone else too! MASTER Adjusts the amount of power amp distortion: 0% clean 50% normal, 100% driven. Note that 50% may not be normal as the amps may have been modeled with the Master set too high. Consider using lower values, or the minimum distortion required to fit the song. This parameter is highly interactive with all other power amp parameters; the lower the Master is set, the less effect the other controls will have. Low Master and high Drive gives smother preamp distortion while high Master lower Drive gives more power amp, symmetric and more aggressive distortion. SAG Controls power amp sag or compression 0% tight, 50% normal, 100% more touch for dynamic sustain. Lower Sag values offer a "tighter" responsiveness for metal and djent playing; higher values provide more touch dynamics & sustain for blues and classic rock riffs. High Bias (closer to class A) reduces the effect of the Sag control. Sag doesn't exist in class A amplifiers since the average plate current doesn't change. Sag is caused by the amplifiers power supply being unable to meet the demand when the map is pushed hard with high Master. When the power sags, the amp output drops and then recovers, creating a unique compression effect with some additional, but temporary distortion when you pick hard. Unlike compressors before the amp, sag compression occurs even when the amp is already very distorted. Large sag gives more compression, better sustain, and can accentuate pick attack. But the amp will appear somewhat less responsive especially at the low end and can get muddy. HUM Controls how much heater hum interacts with your tone. Tube amplifiers generally used low voltage AC in the tube heaters, and sometimes this could add some hum into the signal. At higher settings, things get freaky. Higher levels cause some intermodulation distortion as the heater hum mixes with the signal. Generally left at 0 unless you are looking for a specific effect. RIPPLE Controls how much AC ripple in the power supply interacts with your tone. The power supply of a tube amp is filtered with large capacitors. If the amp is driven hard, these capacitors can't provide sufficient filtering and some AC ripple is introduced into the signal. This is similar to hum but is on the plate of the tube instead of the heater and has a different shape. At higher settings, things get freaky. Also generally left at 0 unless you are looking for a specific effect. BIAS Changes the Bias of the power tubes. Lower values achieve a "colder" Class AB biasing. At maximum, the amp is operating in Class A. Higher or "hot" bias will increase the warmth, reduce headroom, distort earlier or at a lower Master setting, and (in a tube amp) decrease the tube life. Lower or "cold" bias will make the sound less sweet, but will tighten it up and make it more dynamic. Bias X Determines how the power amp tubes' voicing reacts when pushed hard, controlling how much the bias changes when the amp is driven hard. Bias X is a bit like Sag, except it controls change in a tube's operating point due to change in the tube bias when the amp is driven hard. Set low for a tighter feel. Set high for more tube compression. This parameter is highly reactive with the Drive and Master settings

A couple years back I really wanted someone to teach me the ins and out of worship effects: delays and reverbs. Oddly enough, there wasn’t much content out their teaching it. So I bought 50+ Worship Tutorials patches and played with them and studied the settings to really learn worship style effects. Throwing in a video like this completes that learning resource.

This video was so helpful to watch! I've been a Helix user for around a year and a half and really need to update my patches and create some more. Seeing your approach to creating a tone and specific things within a chain was so interesting and has given me a lot of ideas. Very inspired to go and experiment, as well as start using some IRs in my patches. Unsure whether you have done any videos on specific things like overdrives and modulation etc, but I would really be interested in seeing your approach to those specific things! Keep up the great work!

It's a great overview! Thanks, WT. To anyone still having doubts: -The patch gets much louder when you drop some stuff down to path 2B because you're now duplicating your signal by running 2A and 2B in parallel (and without compensating the volumes or mixes). -You can also assign the level of your output block to a footswitch. That's another way to save space on the signal path (and to save negligible DSP, I guess). -There are more efficient methods to do some of the things Brian has done here. Don't just copy what he does and stop thinking. Continue to think critically and learn new stuff about the Helix :)

i enjoyed this walkthrough, thanks! I especially appreciated hearing your thoughts on gain staging. The way you setup multiple delays and verbs is much easier to manage than the way i have tried to change parameters to save DSP that would always lead to "authentic" glitching between songs that was not desirable! Using the multitap delay to feed the wash reverb is brilliant! Always fun to look at my 5yo rig like it's brand new again!

Great video Brian. Boosts confidence in what I’m doing so far 👍 one thing regarding the volume increase after you split your paths (I bet you know but maybe someone else finds this helpful): using the standard split (as the name says) splits the signal between path 2a and 2b and then sums it back up which increases the volume. If you want to use it as an extension of you path 2a you need to send 100% to path 2b and therefore ‚break‘ the signal flow for path 2a. It then gets processed by path 2b and gets routed back to path 2a to carry on there. I get confused there often but that’s typically what happens.

Sounds great. One thing I usually do with my delays/wet effects is place them between the amp and the cab. I find that simulates the amp having an effects loop and thus the wet effects are being triggered by the amp and not by the signal of the speaker. I learned some things about stacking drives as that is usually my struggle to get them to sound right.

I have the 3.5 update, but once we put the cab in and tried to put an IR, it looks like there was no more DSP room for the IR. IR is the only effect that is not available. But then I saw you took out the Cab and kept the IR. But I was able to complete the patch with you and like what I have. Learned a ton of stuff from you bro. Really appreciate what you guys do.

THANK YOU! THE best patch info on KZbin! I do have ONE question: Do you change these patches at all for "live volume"? I say that because patches can sound amazing in headphones and at modest levels at rehearsal, but, you crank them up though a PA at "live level" and they can get quite harsh. Do you use some type of Global EQ'ing to offset the old Fletcher-Munson curve? Thanks in advance!

Thoughts on running multiple same type blocks vs controlling parameter changes with snapshots? Example being your two tape delays(I think there were two tape delay blocks by the end), could be reduced to 1 block that gets altered by the snapshot when you need say a longer delay vs a rhythmic delay. Its been a technique I've started leaning towards because it gives me some more space for effects and I am a over-preparer/tinkerer. Granted it does limit spontaneity when just playing around.

Hello Brian I wanted to know if its possible to request a video on the helix. Would you be able to do a video a parallel video reel on how you route the effects on the helix on how you route the different effects and the routing lines that they look like a S or Snake form on the line 6 Helix. I look forward to hearing from you on this request. Peace

HI Brian- i was wondering is there a reason why you put a volume before everything and not after your drive pedals?

When running a mono signal should we still monitor the gain level at -9dB before adding effects? When I run mono the patches I purchased from WT have a gain level between -14dB to -19dB. They don't get up to -9dB until I use the P&W Lead snapshot. Also thanks for this video and everything else ya'll do for the worship community.

That -9dB thing was just how I set my Apollo (recording interface) gain setting where I plug the Helix in. It doesn’t really have anything to do with the gain staging in the patch itself.

My doubts fell away as quickly as your hair as I continued watching, my friend 😁 What sort of speaker would you recommend for home use with the Helix? I was considering two Headrush FRFR 108s, but a lot of people keep telling me they're bass heavy etc. But I imagine I can EQ them using the methods you speak about here and that would solve a lot of those problems? Cheers for the tutorial, great stuff.

Hi Brian, thank you very much for your tutorial. I followed every single step and still it does not sound the same that you do. When I do the amp and cab the sound from my guitar is too clean, There is no that little drive/distortion. This is happening always when I try to build resets. What I am doing wrong?

I thought delays and reverbs were supposed to be at the end of the signal chain, yet Brian is doing the opposite, am i thinking correct?

@worshiptutorials. When building patches, are they made for guitar/pickup specific: ie hollow body vs solid and single coil vs humbucker vs filertron or tele vs LP?

Couldn't you map the mix and decay on the second Glitz for Swells to Snapshots or Footswitches to save room and DSP Edit: nevermind then it wouldn't be behind the delay, If you were going to do that you would also need to map the mix, feedback, and scale of the other delays to snapshots. This would only be worth it to me if you had to put the amp and cab on the bottom in order to fit more Modulation/Pitch/Drive/etc effects on top.
