Not necessarily. If you compute in the huge inflation of the PLANdemic years, you had a worse deal than I had in 2019, when I sold a Peugeot 207 CC with only 1100€ less than what I bought it for in 2013, 5600€ (it already had 5 years and 31'000Km on the road), a period in which the inflation was "normal".

One may plan to keep a car "until the wheels fall off" but, because it's a bad vehicle for several reasons to begin with, the costs to keep it on the road can outweigh the potential benefit of amortizing depreciation.

I have never bought a brand new car. I always buy used. Just bought a Cadillac XT4 2021 for less than half it's original MSRP at 3 years old now, with low mileage. I keep cars usually about 5-7 years, so my depreciation slows a lot by the time I get them. I just like the kind of car that I like, and to each their own. I don't really buy anything too old to worry about huge problems no matter the brand or model. The difference in what retains value the most is probably negligible for me in my situation.

2 of the vehicles you listed are EVs and get a US subsidy of 7500 and 3750. So you have to subtract that from the depreciation since the owner doesn't pay that. Something depreciates based on what you actually paid not the list price.

I always try to figure the total cost of ownership. EVs always seem to be the worst, while hybrids are the best. I purchased a one year old Ford 2011 Ranger in 2012 because of their reliability, and the fact they stopped making them. I never put a dime in repairs and sold it 10 years later for exactly what i paid for it.

My vehicle purchases are kept below 5% of my net worth and I pay cash. Any drop in value is not tangible. I also put contingencies with every car purchase, such as I’m not allowed to buy another car unless $500k gets invested into making more passive income. Then I have to save up cash for the next car and avoid taking out investments. If more people understand this then we wouldn’t have an auto loan crisis were some individuals are paying 4 figures for a car loan per month.

Just like in the cartoons, there are many demons and angels that whisper in your ears when deciding on which car to buy. The baddest demon is your Ego, and your guardian angel is your Wisdom, sometimes disguised also as your Conscience or Common Sense. "You gotta have this car! It's who you are! Look at those muscles, that no-nonsense fascia! Come on bro, what's there to think about?" "Just think! You'll go into major debt to own this car, and it's going to be worth half as much in a year or two! Can you really afford that?" "Sure you can! Don't listen to that sissy angel! I'll tell you, you'll feel so good about yourself in this car that you'll never want to sell it, let alone in a year or two! Go ahead and get it! You won't regret it!" "What could happen is that you'll regret it way after the car is practically worthless. Play the safe card! Get that Toyota or Honda instead!" "Toyota Shmoyota! Would you rather be cool, or be smart? Come on! Splurge on yourself for once!" ...

Agree, except a small point: between Toyota and Honda (I had one Civic bought in 2008, but since then their reliability decreased, according to Consumer Reports annual reliability surveys) you have at least Mazda from the most important factors (reliability and low TCO Total Cost of Ownership). Otherwise, yes, the Japanese best cars rule: Lexus, Toyota, Mazda, Acura, Honda, Subaru, Suzuki, Mitsubishi, from the most important POVs: reliability, low TCO, longevity etc.

This report should include the reasons why the vehicle depreciate that much. In the case of the Murano, I believe it’s because it is a very old design. But at the same time (due to its good reliability) it makes it a great option to get it as an used vehicle. I got mine like used and after 87k miles, it’s been a great car.

There is the perfect example of scam. Whoever is reading this comment, do not buy or lease Nissan. That is not to mention that the car itself, is a piece of shit. Maverick build production is very low. So, they are very difficult to find new. When a vehicle is difficult to find new, some of those buyers will resort to also shopping for used versions and that props up the resale values of near-new used versions.
@webcomment8895
@webcomment8895 3 ай бұрын
A lot of the EVs lose extra resale value because of various tax credits on new ones. If you would have been able to get $10K or more in combined federal and state tax credits on a new one, obviously, that’s subtracted from the used car value before you even account for normal depreciation. Many of the vehicles with lowest depreciation keep their value because of supply chain issues making the wait for a new one too long. So, new car buyers start looking at any 1 year old used versions of those cars that are available on the lot so they can get a car today. That extra demand drives up the cost of those used vehicles.

It appears that iseecars is using MSRP to determine the initial value of a new car for calculation of drop in value over the first year. This is misleading and at a minimum overstates the impact on the consumer. For example, iseecars lists $34,542 as the average cost of a new Nissan Leaf. But if you check with local dealership prices, you'll see discounts off MSRP ranging from $5,000 to $13,000 (with resulting prices in the $20,000 range). So as a consumer, you just need to make sure you capture as much of that "first year depreciation" up front in your purchase price. Conversely the list of cars that supposedly hold their value the best are cars that happen to be in demand right now and for which dealerships can thus hold the line against deep discounts. So the consumer is going to pay more for those cars anyway. And if I am right about this, then that is why so many EVs are on the poor depreciation list as well, as iseecars holds federal subsidies against the value of the car. I could be wrong about all this; feel free to correct me if my understanding is incorrect.

Its misleading to talk about EV depreciation without also mentioning the significant government rebates that EVs have. A Bolt loses $9,000 in the first year? Well, $7,500 of that comes from the federal tax credit that the original owner receives. When you strip out the tax credit, the actual depreciation is only $1,500. So a misleading and simplistic approach here.

Ignoring resale value is treacherous. In 2016, two weeks after buying my brand new Mazda 3, we were rear ended and the car was totaled. Had l had a 40% depreciation, that would've cost me $10,000 for two weeks of driving a $25k car. I could've rented for two weeks a Lamborghini Aventador for less. Think again.

You have no idea of what you are talking about. Modern large (less frequently charged) actively cooled car batteries have a very decent chance to outlast the car. And they are getting better and better. Used EVs may be the bargain of the century. Actually, mine certainly is. I bought a 2013 Nissan Leaf In 2019 for $6k including sales tax. Since then, I saved more than that amount on fuel and maintenance. The car is negative cost now. And this is a 12 years old car/battery technology (2013 model year, so it was likely made in 2012 Calendar year) with a small battery (frequent charging) without active cooling. Moreover, I don't care for it dying on me and always charge to 100%. Yes, the battery degraded to ~70% of its original capacity, but it still has 60 mile range in the city and serves us well as a second car in the family, -- and will continue to do so for the next 3 years.
