SpongeBob must've corrupted Sandy or Gary, etc. because he's learned to adjust to anything and way too cheerful irl so in the corruption, he wouldn’t have control of himself. Patrick, I think, must've hidden himself from confronting SpongeBob since they are best friends. So while confronting him, he joined SpongeBob. That way, he won't be alone. In SpongeBob, I'm a few episodes we see that Patrick joins SpongeBob or does anything to help SpongeBob bc he's a helper and a friend.
