I actually feel heartbroken when frags are changed. It’s like watching a historic home get torn down to put up a plastic one. What happened to Chloe Narcisse for example is practically criminal. This is an important video; and corporate houses should take note. Niche houses are suddenly sweeping the mainstream crowds for a reason.
@vivianhill6213 жыл бұрын
I’m feeling the same way. If something is great why change it Dior. Miss Dior Cherie has changed yet again. The 2021 version is okay but, not great. Now, if you find something that you like, you’re going to have to buy multiple bottles. Because, they’re either going to be discontinued or reformulated.

Dior should be ashamed at what they have reduced Fahrenheit to. I wore it when it launched and it was sublime. It lasted. It smelled deep and rich. Now it smells so thin and lasts tops 2 hours and it's still 100.00 a bottle. The current Formulation should be at Ross for 19.00.

I agree, the reformulations on many of the (used to be) famous women's fragrances are criminal! I regret not buying YSL Opium when it was still in its original bottle. Even the new bottle design is crap! And most of the recent Dior incarnations was saddening.

Paloma Picasso Minotaure. I bought it only because I remembered how somebody smelled wearing this. It was beautiful and itense so I bought myself a bottle a couple of years later. And....the charm was gone, it still smells beautiful but it's not so powerful any more. And yes, I did keep it on my shelf in dark place for good 5 years, the liquid probably got a bit darker but it doesn't mean that it's like the one I remember from my childhood. Oh, I've just noticed you mentioned it. So you see, it's not only my immagination. Yeah i totally agree about Antaeus, I recently sampled it for the first time in about 30yrs and compared to my 30yr old original splash bottle, that still smells fantastic even after all this time, it smells nothing like the the original nor is it the 24hr beast that it once was. It has so little familiarity with the original it’s basically a completely different fragrance, it’s so sad, it’s not even close, they’ve destroyed a masterpiece. It was impossible to ware, I didn't know about reformulations back then so I was 100% sure that it was something pretty f**king wrong with the juice, I could not returned it as I bought it on a airport tax-free shop, so it ended up in the trash can a year later!

I still have a bottle of Antaeus from 1981. I’ve kept it in my cool dark basement all these years. It still smells great. Comparing it to my 2023 bottle of Antaeus, there is indeed a definite scent that differentiates it from the current version. My 1981 Antaeus has a pungent, animalic note that is almost “body-odorish”. The coriander and clary sage is prominent in the beginning. I think this is the difference. My 2023 Antaeus has the “basic” smell of the original, but it’s not as heavy or thick…the beeswaxy smell is lacking, but the castoreum is there. My 1981 Antaeus also seems to leave a longer prominent smell on my clothing. But the current version is versatile…it’s still Antaeus, but not as dark or “body-odorish”, if that makes sense. I still love Antaeus. To me, it’s an ultra-masculine men’s fragrance. It’s not unisex at all.

Don't you find that the current version of Dior Eau Sauvage is much weaker? One guy on Fragrantica wrote that Dior should sell it by the liter because of the need for such frequent reapplication. I'd add Nautica Voyage and Azzaro Chrome to that list of weaker formulations. There were two recent formulations of Halston Z-14 I've smelled. One was at Marshall's and it was a cinnamon bomb. The version I bought online doesn't have that extremely pungent cinnamon note. There's one major reason that most of your list doesn't pack the same punch it used to, and it's because of one note in them that's now restricted - oakmoss.

As I sat watching your video and listening to you it hit me and please let me know what you think of what I am about to say, most of these perfumes were released years and years ago some of them decades ago and the most recent ones 10 years more or less, so as demands fall for these perfumes over time and they fall out of favor among consumers they perfume houses are stuck with 2 choices they either discontinue them or they water them down and reformulate them to a lesser expensive materials to cut the costs, as you mentioned many times before that raw materials/oils used in perfumery can be expensive, of course this is not the only reason why many houses reformulate their fragrances as you mentioned there is the updated regulations which forbid the use of certain materials as well, I think its mostly cost-effective strategy.

The Antaeus is tmo not to bad. But it’s not as good, thick animalic daring like the og. But it’s rather nice. It smells fresher and is a barbershop kinda frag. The castorium was the “dirty” note. Together with the natural oakmoss it gave that real oomph. These ingredients are not allowed anymore. The new Antaeus brings back memories so I kinda like it nevertheless. its like chasing the dragon sometimes.. the impact perfumes have when its first smelled cant be beat and subsequent occasions smelling the same perfume will gradually become weaker and weaker.. especially when our nose was not as experienced an haven’t been exposed to a lot more scents as it would be after some time.. so sometimes, a fragrance can seem to smell flat as our nose has become more tolerant of stronger and beastier scents, added by mental bias to expect it to be flat.. ((👃🏾))🤗 I'm not wealthy.😝 $90 is my most expensive bottle. (I just purchased a 3.4 Prada L'homme tester from FragranceX)😁😁😁! I've not heard of the Prada house going through any eyebrow raising reformulations.😧/😡 I've heard that the blue colored cologne was a better facsimile.🤷🏽 (not Blue Electrique.) Pardon my ignorance!🙄🤣 Still a (👃🏾👶🏾)...🤦🏽

The thing is that, its apparent about Polo, I would never think of buying it again. I have no idea why or what are they thinking when they do the reforms.Maybe they just need to leave it out there. The original formulations are too expensive to make and most likely would not sell like they did. So why not just squeeze what ever is left of that name recognition. On the bright side there are so many fragrances to love and more and more. I mean its always gonna be something better.

I used at least 3 to 4 bottles of POLO backed in the late 80s to early 90s. Sadly I am now left with some 15ml which I treasure it so much for my nostalgic sniffing now and then.

Oh here we go, the best of the worst (some things ages well, here are the ones that didn't)... an absolute treat! Personally, I do like vintage scents but prefer contemporary fragrances due to availability.

I honestly feel like these companies rip we the consumer off completely with these reforms. Most clones actually perform even better now

ADG was definitely better back in the day. It was more vibrant, more intense and definitely more pleasantly peachy and less lemony. Current version smells like lemon cleaner. Smells ok just meh.

I think this is the same for fragrances across the board, I have abandoned perfumes and make my own blends of essential oils now. They are so bland and short lasting. Is it due to lab made fragrances? Surely we can be natural and sustainable. I would be interested on a review of natural and sustainable fragrances.

vast majority of the reformulations are terrible since they start to use cheaper ingredients in reformulations, it's not just watering down issue. The natural essences' prices go up, they can't sell the product to same price anymore so they are obliged to either raise the price and keep the original formula or keep the price same and change the ingredients. To keep selling the original forces to raise the price, instead the companies choose to keep the prices same. in the end, customer pays the same money for a much lower quality. If for instance Chanel kept the original formula of Antaeus, they would need the sell it for a niche perfume price and that's nearly 4-5 fold of the original selling price. Maybe designers sometime in the future will release the original formulations in a private serie but as i said the price of a 100ml bottle won't be less than something like 300 euros..

I prefer newer, just for the reason in this video-the classics are not the classics anymore, and cannot be replicated with current available ingredients while still being profitable/marketable. I think making the best fragrances with the best fragrance technology is best. Also-depending on the fragrance especially ones from 70s-2010s can smell dated or remind of specific ppl places memories, and that can be good, but I have found a lot of newer releases that can still hit those notes but don’t smell as dated.

pleasure from lauder estee and clinique happy for men were so so amazing in the early 2000's now they distroyed those amazing scents dont understand why????

This is a real problem. Putting weak fragrances on the market and not informing the customers of anything. At least they should put some kind of notice on the box of any changes made. They are so sneaky. I can’t stand that. The customer buys a fragrance thinking that he or she is getting the same thing as the past when in fact they are getting a weaker watered down version of what they used to have. Not nice at all

Drakkar didn't make this list because it still smells great!! :)

@@ThePerfumeGuy Agreed. Way back when, everything came in splash bottles as well as atomizers. The splash bottles were a bit cheaper and you got more ml's, so my Paco, Chanel Pour Monsieur cologne concentree, Halston Catalyst, Obsession, Pierre Cardin Musk (where have you gone?) and Azzaro Pour Homme were all splash bottles. A splash on the chest, face and neck, and arm hair and I was good to go for the entire day or night.

@@ThePerfumeGuy I disagree with that. The main aspect of Drakkar Noir was the large amount of oakmoss and it barely has that now. To say that Drakkar Noir is still great is misleading. I would probably have to layer the current formulation of Drakkar Noir with Rogue Perfumery's "Bon Monsieur" in order to get it to smell similar to what it used to smell like.
@ThePerfumeGuy3 жыл бұрын
Well removing the oakmoss is the issue with a lot of these fragrances. When I compare Drakkar Noir to Polo Green Drakkar Noir smells much better than Polo Green. I'm not saying it's like the best smelling fragrance but it still smells great to me! :)
@regismonkton3 жыл бұрын
@@ThePerfumeGuy I understand what you mean. How Drakkar Noir used to be like is still one of my favorite fragrances, and I believe that you think that highly of it yourself. I was wearing it almost everyday, and well into the 1990s.

One I can't stand right now is Dunhill for Men. Not sure if it's because of reformulations, or if it smelled like that in the past (or if my bottle might be spoiled even.) To me it smells just like a cheap hairspray.

I'm surprised you don't like it but then again all noses are different and tastes are different as well!

@@ThePerfumeGuy Yes of course. Looking forward to your description of it. I actually have smelled a recent Polo Green and it does not bother me, but I never knew the original version, so can't say it's reformulated. If Dunhill for Men has not been reformulated, and my bottle is not spoiled, then yes honestly I do not like it one bit so far.
