@LIQUID FX ha! nah, my take-away is that Ian is simply thoughtful in his responses. If he's grumpy or neutral it's because someone is asking him to waste time thinking about something he doesn't think merits the effort.

I saw “Cats” in Reno in 1999, towards the end of its run. I had just turned eleven. About halfway through “Memory”, my little brother got my attention, and then pointed over his shoulder. There was a woman sitting in the row behind us, just bawling her eyes out uncontrollably. We were covering our mouths, smacking our knees, and generally giving all that we had to contain our laughter for the rest of the song. Looking back, I think maybe she’d had a bit too much to drink. XD

Wally’s actually the character’s real name, he’s from the UK. Waldo is just what they call him in the North American editions. Apparently, the publisher who had the license for our version didn’t think that Wally would resonate with us (perhaps it’s a more common name here?). He has various other names around the world.

I can't see interest dropping in the same way younger generations don't care about Atari games. Nintendo still keeps those franchises alive and constantly cashes in on nostalgia for NES games. Just look at Super Mario Bros 35. Plus, 8 and 16-bit games will hold up as long as indie devs keep using that "retro" aesthetic, which may well continue for decades. People don't often make Steam games that look like Pitfall. The cynic in me says prices will keep rising, if anything, as more sellers will try to pass off common game carts as "rare", more people become collectors, and available stock goes down because the carts are finite and get damaged or go missing or get used as a donor for a repro or just plum get hoarded.

@@swagar most people who bought NES classics were aged 25+ at the time of release. The game n watch did not sell out and can be bought anywhere. There are a lot of NES games in closets and they will be given away by those who inherit them. Sad but true

For me Pat and Ian that I am a lot better games in my old age than I was a kid. At my brother's house I was playing Double Dragon 3 on NES on his LCDTV with all of the input lag included and I was playing out of my mind and I got pretty far too ( forget which stage I made it to). Also was playing TMNT2 on NES emulated on the OG Xbox and I also was playing out of my mind with the duke Xbox controller and me and my cousin ended up beating the game. It was awesome. I think i have completed more NES games in my adult years than my younger years.

Most challenges completed in an hour wins. It can be quite entertaining and also gets your eyeballs on a large variety of games in short time.

For me, the worst game on my favorite system is Battletoads for NES. Great idea, great graphics, but the game wasn't just hard, it felt like the designers were fucking with you. It wasn't just hard, it was unfair. Juxtapose that with Ninja Gaiden 2 which was super hard but also super fun and it made you want to get better to beat it. The best game on the least favorite system is easy. Road Rash on the overhyped 3DO. I was an early adopter of that system, but man, I was always buying games and returning them, because so many of them were just shitty games with FMV tacked on. But Road rash was just incredible on 3DO. Looked and played great, very addictive gameplay, and that soundtrack was just amazing. Loved that game. It's the only reason I didn't throw my 3DO in the garbage.

OMG an NES world champion cart made by me id take the last level in Ninja Gaiden 1 for the first challenge, the inside of the Technodrome level in Ninja Turtles 1 for the 2nd, and for the 3rd, the last castle in Zelda 2. You have to do all that with no time limit but you have to beat them all without dyeing once to get a you win screen and you also have to have the highest score to win the tournament but there would be no multipliers or time limits on any of them giving the player room to make there own strategy. I guess give a max of 2 hours to play if you can live that long in any of those environments lol. Id put the end screen from ghostbusters on NES as the you win screen just for a joke and program in an optional reward where if you accept it makes you play the first level of Dr Jeckle and Mr Hyde. I think the micro transaction thing will be left as a choice to the game sellers, if they want Europeans to join there online games and there game sold in Europe they will have to follow there laws or loose those customers the choice is theirs and im sure they wont say no to money so itll effect North America too. If Xbox and PS were smart they would include an IP bouncer built into there consoles so people in other countries can get around the rules that stop them from playing games and increase sales and increase software sales too. Example if GTA5 was banned in Canada and i really wanted to play it on Xbox One i could manually look up a type in a random IP that would say im in the USA to get around that but if it had built in IP bouncing it could do that for everyone everywhere instantly allowing entire countries access to games that are banned if they choose to use the IP bounce Also allowing them to buy American digital games and download them. $$$$$$ Its not like there governments are going to go door to door checking consoles to see if the IP bouncer is turned on or if they downloaded Wolfenstein 3D lol. Also other countries would still have to physically get there hands on a console so you can still control what counties are connecting through distribution even if everyone on earth bounces there Xbox IP.

Great video and topic. Just for the fuck of it this got me thinking. ha ha. Least favorite console would probably be the CD-i. Played it on emulation and couldnt find any redeeming qualities to it. Even the Jaguar might have 1 or 2 good games, 3D0 has some great ports but maybe not great exclusives. Problem is I cant think of a single game that would qualify as a favorite. Hotel Mario was atleast playable, so that might be my pick. There are some machines that are much worse but those are old computers like the Spectrum and Amstrad. Spectrum even has a few good games, and maybe even Amstrad. N64 I owned and never really liked it, but it seems amazing compared to CD-i. Least favorite game on my favorite console would probably be Duke Nukem Forever on the Xbox 360. The 360 is probably one of my favorite consoles based on how many games I completed on it, how much time I put into some of those games. That generation was one of my favorites. Damn hard to pick a favorite generation though. There are some worse games on the 360 but I never picked them up or played them so Duke Nukem wins by default. I think once these retro games get to the point of not working anymore the value will really plunge. That may be decades from now but at some point it will happen. People who didnt grow up with these games will also eventually forget or not be exposed to these games and not value them. I run all the older shit on an emulation dedicated PC which I think is the best way to preserve these games and play them moving forward. It may not be ideal for speedrunners who want to run games on identical hardware, but even that has limitations as each console and tv set up is not going to be exact.

He didn't mean the 90's per se, he just meant when NES games were at their lowest value in general. He clearly doesn't know the market history as well as you guys. He basically meant the 2000's, like between 2000 and 2010 when the prices were at their lowest. It was a simple question, gotta read between the lines guys. And no, they aren't going to ever drop to those dirt cheap levels again. I actually do not agree that they will ever be like model trains where nobody cares about them. The NES will always be somewhat relevant simply because there are so many amazing classic games on the system, and great games will always be relevant to some degree. Also simply because of the unique look and sound of the NES, it will always have some appeal even many many years from now.
@omikronweapon
@omikronweapon 3 жыл бұрын
I'm not even sure why people keep asking that question. It's THE cliche thing to ask. Are they hoping to load up on cheap games again? No, you missed it, sorry. That's the thing anyway: as soon as YOU think it's interesting, millions of other people already had the same thought. And the prices will sky rocket. Unless you're a fanatic like Pat and got into it when nobody gave a shit and laughed at you for collecting them. The flip side is that the prices will only be dirt cheap again when nobody (including you) cares anymore, because there's some other popular thing to spend your money on. Seems like a pointless question. If you want to make money of off stuff, you're already way too late if you have to ask someone else, and if you really want to play the games, just go the ROM way.

Vocaloids started out as a way for music bands with out a vocalist, or needing a certain sound to get that through technology. Miku, by far the most famous but not the first! It's often said the Ievan Polkka Miku video is what really started her fame in the west. While she technically appeared in a special OVA episode of Lucky Star anime. Now Miku has become the perfect Diva, no tantrums, can work 24/7 and forever 16. So Ian is kinda of correct Miku has been used in Japan in TV adds for Toyota, Daihatsu made a Miku edition car (known as Daihatsune, her last name being Hatsune) & has even starred in a TV commercial along side Scarlett Johansson - it was a Lux Shampoo add, trust me it's worth a watch XD) What ever you think of Vocaloids, atleast try the games. Made by Sega they are up there with the best of the rhythm games! IMO - I think V-tubers are the next step of what ever Miku' is, since humans crave interaction with celebrities & mix that with the anime best girl wars... ^^

Two, it's Emulation based so there's probably lag. If I play Super Mario Bros on the original console or an FPGA based one, I can beat it easily. But on a device like that, I'd probably die a lot too.

@@HiNRGboy Barnes & Noble and Books-A-Million/2nd & Charles are still around, but aren't nearly as widespread as they once were. Borders, of course, has been gone for years. You _might_ still find the odd independent/'Mom-and-Pop' bookshop here and there, but what with COVID and all, there's no telling how long _those_ will be around.

Are you kidding me? I used to work at Goodwill in the early 2000s and we'd get 5 or 6 NES games a day back then. As soon as the SNES was in everyone's house, NO ONE (very few) cared about the NES.

Yep. I remember getting a bunch of NES consoles at EB for 1.99-2.99 each in the early 00s, and games for about 50 cents to a buck or so. Made great gifts!

Because of the pandemic and people being stuck at home, those games have gone up in price. A lot of retro games went up in price. Nintendo made games on the Gamecube at that time, were around $60. That is $10 more than they were new.

N64 sucked donkeyballs Low 320x240 resolution, muddy blurry textures and effing cartridges. But at least it had a z-buffer. PS1 with its textures and shapes that bounce everywhere. Being a PC gamer, I never saw PS1 until years later, and it never impressed me. How do you take a cutscene seriously when the characters look like they're having seizures?

Really Ian, the N64? I get that it doesn’t have the most diverse library, but it’s worse than the Jaguar? The Sega CD? The 3DO? The CD-i?

@@kopeofonrac2084 I don’t even hate all of those consoles I listed (in fact, I think the Sega CD is rather underrated, it was a decent idea and it served some purpose in its time), but yes: with as many consoles as he’s aware of, you’d think he wouldn’t hold the N64 in such low regard. The man is entitled to his opinion, and it’s no skin off my back, I just don’t get it.

@@kopeofonrac2084 Most of my multiplayer experience on the console was at a friend’s house. His dad was our den leader in Webelos, so we got to play Goldeneye every Friday night before our meeting. In retrospect, it might not have been the most age-appropriate game for nine-year-olds, but it’s pretty tame compared to modern shooters. Sometimes it’d be DKR or Turok, but it was usually Goldeneye.
