I had arranged a charter for my company out of Westport, WA and we told everyone the bar would be a little rough that day, but nothing unusual. As we headed out of the marina, I made sure everyone knew that wearing a life preserver was not a 'sissy' thing to do, and showed everyone that I was wearing a fishing vest that was also a life preserver. I showed everyone where the life jackets were and to tell me or the deck hand if you would feel more comfortable wearing one. No one asked for one. As we started over the bar, the tide and the wind made for very high waves with a very short period and two women that had never been on a boat said they did not feel comfortable. Two guys not in our group started giving them a hard time, but two older guys, also not in our group, grabbed out two life preservers each, put one on themselves, and then helped the two women into their own. While we had no problems, the women said they felt more comfortable when other people set an example and the two guys that hassled the women were told in no uncertain terms they were not welcome on future charts. People should ALWAYS be made comfortable that they are doing the right thing in wearing a life jacket or questioning if the boat they are on is capable of taking on the current conditions. I watched these vid clips and was horrified that these people in the bow riders were not taking even minimum precautions in what were (obviously) questionable conditions. I am looking at these kids under five years of age without life jackets in boats that are (again, obviously) wallowing and in danger of listing so heavily they will flood after a huge stuffing. There is nothing as useless as a life jacket that is stowed instead of properly worn.

Than after taking in 500 gallons of water in 1 stuff the boat decides to list on the starboard side and decided to steer onto the starboard side to make the listing even worse. And Than decides to turn around in tge worse area after already trying to sink the boat. These are the type of people who need to be charged with child endangerment. I remember first seeing a bow-rider on a lake around 1970 when I was a kid. My Dad and I looked at it, then each other, and together said "Nah". If there's more people in your boat than can sit comfortably behind the windshield, then it's probably overloaded. You don't see bow-riders on or near the ocean in my adopted country of New Zealand. Kiwis have a good handle on the concept of seaworthiness. It's all closed-deck or inflatable center-console down here, even inland from what I've seen.

I'm a marine rescue skipper and I just can't believe the incompetence of these skippers. First why in the hell are most going out in these conditions, many boats are over loaded, why in the hell do most skippers have there crew in the bow area of these boats, bow riders should be banned. Don't they first check the conditions, only one vessel where the kids had life jackets on, some skippers just didn't care that there family or friends were getting pulverized, just keep powering on, you can receive severe injuries in these situations. Come on people start using your brains if they have any. That last one was just so bad, should never go boating again, well the crew will never go out again.

I am fascinated to see how long it takes for the “captain” to realize he is in trouble and turn around. Some seem to try to react to the waves by trying to fight back or overpower them by force. Others seem to realize they are in trouble but then are paralyzed with embarrassment while racking their brains to come up with an excuse that minimize the shame. I can only imagine how bad they got it from the moms. I might feel badly for them if not for the intoxicating feeling of witnessing the suffering of others- particularly those that have more than I do. Who ever heard of a 350 Hp engine anyway?

this video really demonstrates how rough water can endanger children more than adults. All boaters need to be think about not taking children into conditions which might be OK (just) for the adults, but might cause actual injury to a child. Your footage makes it clear that children being lighter, they are more likely to become airborne in the drop-offs, and to be washed off their seats when a wave comes over. Their smaller hands and smaller muscles mean their grip on railings is relatively weak. So they are more likely to suffer impact injuries. Also, they are more likely to panic and, if washed overboard, to be weaker swimmers. When people do their compulsory boat licence course they ought to be shown this video under “why everyone on your boat needs to wear a life-jacket” and again under " how not to endanger your passengers' lives just because you're cocooned from breakers and impact shocks by the superior comfort and safety of your padded chair in the midsection".

As a UK powerboat instructor of many years I can in all honesty say that non of the so called 'captains' would have stood a chance of passing the qualification. The first rule of powerboating is the wearing of PFD and the second is to make sure crew/passengers are secure and have secure handholds. These clips sicken me! As an afternote boats/engines should be trimmed to the speed and conditions and pfd should be fitted to the individual, ie each person's pfd is for that individual or if not the pfd should be numbered and then allocated and fitted to an individual BEFORE leaving the dock.

I've no boating experience but some of these men looked so incompetent and careless in handling the boat. Is there no better way to position their boat or the wave is really too much to handle. They looked clueless and ignorant to the situation and just kept driving with incompetant skill. I can understand the importance of life jacket and dangers on bow. Just wondering is there anything can be done on the driving side. Thank you.
