Thanks Ronny for these! I'd like to add that no matter how experienced you think you are you can get cought out. My good friend died crossing a river in Queensland when his truck got side-swept and turned upside down. He has been living off road for years and have crossed that river hundred times.. He just didn't know that a couple week earlier there was a storm and the bottom got a lot deeper. When he realized that it's much deeper than usually it was too late. THey found him almost a week later. Please take these tips to heart! 4x4 is about having fun - not riskiing your life!

Yeah...That rushing thing got me once. I got an emergency call (Get home right now, family emergency) and went down a trail doing about 3 times what I should have been. 2 hours later, at home, I found that my entire front suspension was effectively gone, scraped off by the highway after I broke the A-arm mounts bounding down the trail.

The worst mistake iv made was taking my girlfriend and 2 young children camping at our local 4x4 park which I was familiar with but hadn't been to for a couple months. I had a truck with 33 inch super swampers and was experienced. Didn't do anything crazy all weekend and even avoided my normal mud holes because I had no other trucks with me. Well on my way out right at the exit not more than 50 meters from the main gravel road I had a burst of excitement and went into a 10x 10 water puddle. Bad mistake. Water over the hood engine shut off and I had to carry all my family out in chest deep water. Someone chewed a huge hole in the middle of the main road. 2 kids in a stroller middle of nowhere we walked for 2 hours before luckily getting picked up. Never assume that puddle is the same depth as the last time you went through it. Cheers

My biggest mistake was when I first got a navara d40. Fitted it with mud tyres and thought it would go anywhere🤪. I got stuck and could get hold of anyone for a recovery. The Missus said she’d call her dad who I still hadn’t met. This is how the first time I met the father in law went. He turns up in a wrangler and comes over and says, “so you’re jimmy, do you do much 4wheeling?” I said “yeah” . He threw his snatch strap towards me and said “doesn’t look like it” then got in his car. He made the recovery and got out before I could, disconnected the strap from his car and said, “bring it around when it’s clean with 2 bottles of wine” then drove off. That year for my birthday he bought me some maxx traxx with “try these before you call me next time” written on the box. Later that year we did a trip to Broke Inlet where he got bogged in some sand. This was my time to shine!!! I ran up to his car with the still unopened box and said, “ you wanna see if these work?” Since then I’ve upgraded the navara to a 76 series and couldn’t be happier

I live in the Northwest territories and a friend of mine was following behind a big truck throwing up a big cloud of snow, he couldn't see the truck in front of him until he noticed faintly the brake lights he swerved into the ditch but caught the corner of the semi totalled his 1 ton van he's very fortunate to be alive God was looking after him that day... Rule of thumb I learn living in the Yukon with the gravel roads and all the dust or of the clouds of snow always stay back where is clear.... Slow down or stop until it is.... You never know if the vehicle ahead of you is stopped until your pile into him........

This video has sort of hit home for me. I remember about 35 years ago when I was around 10 or 11 years of age hearing of an accident that had happened to one of my dad's customers from his work shop. Apparently they were out four weeling in the Victorian high country somewhere and during a recovery the winch cable snapped (steel cables only back in those days) cutting him in half. As a young kid hearing that story it still plays on my mind when ever we are out with friends and have to do a recovery. I'm the one running around like a madman telling everyone to get out of the way before we start a recovery. I'd rather be too safe than not safe enough.

Well, there are many engines that would get ruined by this, most vehicles have hydraulic chain tensioners so the timing belt or chain isnt tight enough before starting and it can ruin your timing and then your pistons are gonna meet valves. The chance of belt or chain getting loose is way higher if the engine rotates backwards.

After watching many recovery videos involving water it seems to me that it would be most sensible to preattach the recovery ropes before entering the water. Or at the very least a shorter rope with the unattached end high above the attachment point where it can be retrieved quickly. And at BOTH ends. Even if panic wants to set in you save probably several valuable minutes not having to get the rope(s) out and attaching them to the recovery points.

My worst mistake... Picked up my first ever proper 4wd, a lifted 80 series, on the way to the VIC High country for a weeks camping. The truck was packed, no cargo barrier, and at least a couple hundred kilos of gear on the roof. We didn’t even get off-road until dark and lost GPS so we’re trying to use mud maps and hand written directions from a mate to his ‘secret spot’. Found a track that seemed to go where we needed to be and headed down. The missus was riding shotgun, and I remember looking over and seeing her ‘standing up straight’ with one arm out behind me. Struck me as odd at the time, but I was having a ball. When we got to the bottom, sure enough, we’d found my mates secret spot, they were all waiting at the end, mouths open. They’d seen our lights and were wondering who was stupid enough to be coming in that way. We’d just driven down the steepest fire trail in the area, in the dark, with a top heavy truck and a total rookie behind the wheel. Turns out the missus was holding back the hard gear we’d packed right behind the drivers seat. She reckoned it moved so fast when we started the descent it would have knocked me out if it hit me. Drove the track the next day, in daylight, and near shat myself.

WORST mistake I've made so far (still in my first year of 4x4 here) was "just sending it" into the deepest mudhole yet - in the back-backcountry, alone, without a winch, without reception my last thought was "this is a terrible idea and I'm going to regret it" but my confidence had grown so much that I just did it anyway ended up in a long saga of getting stuck overnight, lots of panic, a hike-out, and a hefty tow bill the only thing I can say in my defense is I was prepared with food, water, sleeping gear, and an emergency GPS (didn't use) plus fit enough to walk out and the tow truck drivers were impressed how much effort I put in trying to dig myself out alone (despite never making it) yea, learned my lesson there XD

Worst mistake, spotted a friend who was new to 4wd down a slippery muddy hill here in Bunyip. He made it down safely. I then hopped in my 4wd already had it in low range, drove to the edge. Stoppe right on the edge, put it in neutral (auto gearbox), did a final check that the track was clear or the radio, checked in with my spotter. And proceded into the decent by taking my foot of the brake....never put it in gear, let alone 1st.... as soon as I started, I touched the brake pedal and all 4 wheels locked up, I went skidding down the hill. Luckely I managed to yank the gearstick to 2nd, got the wheels rotating and regained control.

Great demonstration on the mistakes of using non-rated recovery gear. Last week I was using some 2" webbing while recovering a broken ATV. . It snapped after a couple tugs. Thankfully, no one was in the way but it could certainly have done some damage. Well done guys!

For your part 2! One of the worst offroading mistakes I've seen, which got us into a bit of strife on Fraser Island, having someone who didn't get the concept of backing trailers spotting someone in a tight spot backing a camper trailer. Give this person 10 points for effort, but gotta know your experience and your capabilities when spotting someone backing a trailer - fortunately someone with experience (not me haha) stepped in and we got out! But yea it is important when backing campers - it pays to have someone with experience spotting you

G'day Ronny & Torb's Great video as always & some very bloody good points to think about & keep in mind when out on any adventure. The only piece of advice I have difficulty with & personally won't do is the one were you recommend always putting the truck in gear when parked with the handbrake applied & ignition off. This is good advice for Petrol & for the newer Diesel engines, However with the older Diesel engine were they have a manually operated cable to shut them down if these trucks roll & it does not need to be much they will fire up & go bush bashing on there own. Unfortunately I am speaking from experience, it''s as funny as now but back on the day it scared the crap out of me in the mad dash to catch the bloody truck & jump back on board without getting run over by my own flaming truck. LOL Anyway, fellas Safe Travels, Steve.

I drive off-road for a Mountain Rescue team, years ago when learning, I was been taught the failed hill start recovery technique by a British Army Instructor in a Land Rover Defender 110, we did all the usual checks, I put it in Reverse, he checked it was in reverse, checked centre diff lock was in, clutch up, Handbrake on. He talked me though the process, release the handbrake with your foot on the brake, and start her up. We did all that, and as soon as it started we hit a rock step and it popped out of reverse gear, and I had to freewheel and steer right back down the hill. I got to the bottom and he said well done, you didn't panic....if you'd have hit the brakes we would have probably rolled it! BTW Old Land Rover handbrakes are "interesting" as they work on the Propshaft, not the wheels and there is a seal at the back of the gearbox that leaks oil onto it...most LR owners have had that don't trust the handbrake experience!

I’ve only been out a couple times. But I got stuck next to the river the night before a massive flood. That was the end of that truck. It’s FULL of river clay . And another time I left my drop hitch on the back and alllllmost got hung up on a big rock but I got lucky and slid off. GREAT VIDEO!! Thank you for this priceless advice

Love it Ronny thanks for sharing. As for the Handbrake, my Pajero on is pretty crap too. Had the shoes replaced and it was fine for a bit but turned to crap pretty quick. Just send it can be a bad idea that's for sure.

my worst mistake was taking the corner too fast in the wet and writing off the vitara, not walking the fast flowing creek and writing off the troopy and letting the inexperienced girlfriend drive and rolling the troopy forwards and also writing off that one.. lucky i'm a reformed writer-offer-a now

Great video. Ronny just for your part 2.. Probably worth further highlighting the danger of setting up sleeping arrangements in front or behind vehicles when not on flat ground. Also setting up soft sleeping shelters under larger overhang trees. Cheers

Dad was a commercial pilot after his service as a ferry command pilot- his pet peeve was pilots who HAD to get to the destination no matter what. He always had a plan B and willing to "try again tomorrow", This goes long with your never panic or hurry. Good show . Try not to drive drunk- just cause your in the bush is no reason to screw up that bad. (ask me how I know) Once hit a sand berm so hard the hood flew up.. One lad suggested we should stop and put it down- when it flopped due to braking we were in front of a dynamite storage bunker.
