Fun fact about Big Rigs (and presumably Midnight Race Club): if you continually reverse for a little under an hour, you'll eventually reach 12.3 *undecillion* (that's 36 zeroes) miles per hour. At that point, you will automatically win the race, as you're going so fast the game registers you as being everywhere at once.

Remember how in the Worst Plug & Play videos, the first console had "Boat Race", which was just a visual hack of "F-1 Race", and then the sequel console changed it to "UFO Race", and then again into "Bicycle Race"? Midnight Race Club is basically just that to Big Rigs, except they didn't even bother to change the backgrounds to make it look as if it were a different game.
@ChaseMC215 Жыл бұрын
Apparently for Midnight Race Club, it was supposed to be one whole game with Tuner cars, trucks, bikes, and Big Rigs, but Steller Stone likely didn't have enough time to finish the game so they sold Big Rigs and Midnight Race Club as separate games. Fun fact, the Big Rigs are still in Midnight Race Club, you just have to be lucky when you play the game via it's quick race function, which will risk a chance of the game falling on it's face as one of the vehicles doesn't wanna work, much like the original version of Big Rigs, if you pick the Lamborghini ripoff, it crashes the whole game

Fun fact: "Big Rigs" and "Midnight Race Club" were originally being developed (and were supposed to be released) as one single game, but GameMill, the publisher of not only these two games, but all of Stellar Stone's catalogue except for "Taxi Racer" (if anyone cares to ask, "Taxi Racer" was published by a Dutch company named BestBuys Interactive), split it into two, taking away the trucks from "Midnight Race Club" into their own separate but exactly identical game (only without collision detection, and I'm assuming this was because "Midnight Race Club" did not have collision detection at the time, either), and shipped the end result in what we now infamously know as "Big Rigs". Not that this makes Stellar Stone any less guilty of their crimes against gaming, though. Also, like another user said before (thanks, Verdant Range), LJN was long dead before "Spirit of Speed 1937" came along. Its brand was just brought back by Acclaim for just this one title. I don't know if it has ever been confirmed that it actually was because the game was of such poor quality that Acclaim didn't want to associate themselves with it and hoped that, by putting the LJN logo on it instead of theirs, no one would notice it was actually them, but it's the most popular rumor. In any case, great video, as usual!

It should be noted that LJN was already long gone by the time that one racing game came out. They closed down in 1994. I'm guessing their parent company Acclaim didn't want their logo on it, so they used the LJN branding on it. Also, LJN's branding came back last year. It's being used by Jazwears for their All Elite Wrestling Unmatched line of action figures. Also also, if you want to know what really killed LJN, look up a line of toy guns called Entertech.
@ruekurei882 жыл бұрын
I'll save people the trouble of looking it up 'Company closure The end of Entertech's short-lived success was due in part to incidents in which law enforcement officers shot and killed children toting toy guns, claiming to have mistaken them for actual firearms.[7] Toy guns were used in robberies of retail establishments and banks.[8][9] Amid these highly publicized incidents, Entertech voluntarily began manufacturing guns with blaze orange-colored caps in 1987, and began a line of less-realistic neon-colored guns later that year.' With the infinite reverse speed glitch in Big Rigs it's funny (and a bit sad) that developers nowadays STILL forget to implement "negative caps". Meaning if you had enough space to reverse and the right skills to steer you could beat some tracks fast driving in REVERSE.

Its not about the lack of negative capping. Its all about the integer inder/overflowing. See most developer would use an integer that lets negative number to properly limit how much number is used on a variable and to save in memory and calculation. Some will use bigger integer value like long and maybe the float and doubles. How i see big rigs did it, is that they used 2 long worth of variable each for forward and backward motion thrust. This result in them aimply labeling the second variable as negative and draw it as negative. The reason it can go into the octodecillion is because they must have used a double, a variable meant for high data values which is meant to display the points like 1.50. Uaing double as normal variable gives alot of data and if its an unsigned value, it goes from 0 to whatever the doubles maximum data was it(i forgor) but its big.

The terrible turning is BS, judging from historical footage of the real thing where Dick Seamen is taking those tight turns at high speeds for the infamously homophobic Hitler. No, that's not a joke; it really happened. But it is realistic for some cars to be completely left in the dust at the start. And for some drivers to be struggling more than others. Basically, there doesn't seem to be much interest in making the race as close as possible. Or as safe as possible. Or safe in general. Dick Seaman, admirer of the Nazi party and representative of the master race, would suffer a real beating that year. Two years later, he'd be giving head to a massive piece of wood, by which I mean a tree. He died a horrifying death, that metaphorically represented his much deserved trip to Hell. As bad as Spirit of speed is it actually has some sort of historic accuracy. The race cars of the 1930s were incredibly difficult to drive. Auto Union's cars from the time had engines with up to 600 horsepower, mounted onto a frame that was basicly two steel beams. ANd th esuspension wasn't that different from what you would find on an old VW Beetle (Ferdinand Porsche was heavily involved in both). When modern drivers have tried to drive them they have all been very clear that the cars were both incredibly difficult and scary to drive. And they required a lot of physical effort. The unfairness of the grid also happened back then. The rulebook was much thinner back then, and cars that would be placed into different classes now were just lumped into the same race and sent off. If Mercedes and Auto Union showed up the other teams could just forget about the top positions. Both Mercedes and Auto Union got governmental support at the time. The angry guy with the mustache who was in power was very interested in cars, and was very pleased with the fact that Mercedes was the worlds first professional racing team. The people in the team all had matching suits, everybody knew exactly what their job was, and they had a trained pit crew just like we see in F1 racing today. This was completely unheard of at the time. The guy with the old paintbrush stuck under his nose decided that the only thing that was better than one German team who won everything, was two German teams who left everyone else in the dust and took turns winning. So then the Auto Union racing team was founded (a collaboration between DKW, Horch, Wanderer and Audi). The two teams for the most part dominated racing from 1935 to 1939, and they were far ahead of everyone else, with Rudolf Carraciola and Bernd Rosemeyer being two of the most accomplished drivers. The cars they were driving then could probably still have been competitive in the 1950s. In the 1935 German Grand Prix an Italian racing driver named Tazio Nuvolari managed to beat both Mercedes and Auto Union in an outdated Alfa Romeo P3. Nobody had expected that a non German car would win so nobody had brought anything else than the German national anthem to play at the victory ceremony. But that was no problem. Because Tazio Nuvolari always travelled with a 78 recording of the Italian national anthem in his suitcase. The full story is very entertaining and worth looking into if one is interested in racing history.

For those curious the reason the speedometer is in the center of the Yaris (AKA the Echo AKA Platz) is that in some countries like the UK people drive on the other side of the road from the US and thus have their steering wheels on the other side. That entire Spirit of Speed section seems like a big ol case of “skill issue” tbh. Every complaint is literally just from a lack of understanding how such racing games are played, outside of the “bouncing wall” and “no signage on the road to announce corners” You can’t just full throttle through corners. You understeer that way. That’s realistic. Cars breaking down during a race gives you a yellow flag indicating there’s danger. That’s realistic. Etc

Fun fact from my life: one day we were having mock matura exams to test our English speaking ability and on listening part the speaklady gave a short review about Big Rigs. Soo, yeah. The game is so infamous that even Polish Central Examination Board included it in the exams

Ahhhhh, glad this episode was made. I remember hearing about the LJN game on the Dreamcast but I could never remember what it was called. Also, seeing Donkey makes me really happy to be born in 1995 and raised on a Genesis and SNES.
