When I saw the title of your podcast, the first album I thought about was days of future past! 😂 I always wished they would re-record it because I still love that album even as lousy as it sounds!

Great Video ! Is Genesis a Blue Hatter Label ? The Beatles Oldies, Stereo Album came out on the UK Fame label which people liked much better than Blue Hatters reissues, in general. 80s Blue Hatters v the Charisma UK OG or UK EMI Fame Reissues could be an Avenue for a future KZbin Video !

@davidbagnall335 a lot of the fame reissues were mastered by harry moss

The biggest reason for your inner groove distortion is likely not a flaw in the vinyl but more likely it was once played with a worn stylus which caused groove wear or played with an improperly set to the tone arm cartridge. The inner most tracks always suffer most. I have both as well from the 60's and both play fine. Sound wise, I suspect they are not as dynamic sounding as others due to the crowded 8 songs per side.

Early pressings of Yes' Close to the Edge had a lot of distortion on side one on the organ passage, recently remasters managed to fix this problem and now the copy to own. Rush Vapor Trails was supposed to be bad sounding on CD but the first edition vinyl copies sound fine. I found most Japanese pressings I have heard myself are not good, there are some great ones but not many . The best Magical Mystery Tour stereo LP pressing is the 1973 Germany reissue, Apple SHZE 327 D. Nice video.

@@suffolkaudiophile Agreed about the German Horzu "Magical Mystery Tour." That one is especially worth having because it contains an extended version of "Strawberry Fields Forever" in which John Lennon says "I buried Paul," or "I'm very tall," or "cranberry sauce," or whatever it is, twice.

I also always thought part of the reason for the poor sound on A Collection of Beatles Oldies was due to the number of tracks squeezed on to it, but I was wrong. There are 16 tracks but they are very short. The actual running time of each side is less than Sgt. Pepper and that sounds great.

I think it's more around shoddy mixing and preparation rather than how many tracks, the mono does fair better though

One of the worst sounding records I own is the og press of Motley Crue's Dr Feelgood. I've owned a few copies over the years (don't judge me lol) and they've all been muddy and flat with too much mid range. The CD sounds much better.

Pink Floyd the Final Cut sounds great on my set. However I have the early pressing and not digital repress.

I had an OG UK press of the Jefferson Airplane- Volunteers LP. Although it had a beautiful glossy cover, I traded it off. Compared to my OG US copy, it sounded flat and undynamic.

I always thought Animals by Pink Floyd sounded flat & the only flaw in Lamb is the somewhat lacklustre Production. Technology has helped clean up both a bit.

"A Collection of Beatles Oldies" was thrown together for the 1966 Christmas season because The Beatles were still working on "Sgt. Pepper" and EMI wanted a Beatles release for Christmas. And if you hate that Florence + The Machine album that much, why do you still have it?

I don't hate the music.... I judst think the production and mastering sucks. There are one or two tracks I might listen to, but as a whole I can't listen to it

Worst was Shades of a blue orphanage by thin lizzy. I have tried 6 Santana records but unfortunately they all sound the same. Why doesn't he make a different record. All Doors lps sound as if the singer is playing with himself. They spoilt the Kiss lps by having a hole in the middle.

Japanese vinyl is always a curates egg, if not a roll of the dice. Whilst the packaging and pressings are nearly always impeccable, the SQ lags somewhere behind. I know for sure, as I used work on the Kinks catalogue when the Japanese franchise wanted to release something they were never allowed access to the OG production masters and on at least one occasion, I know were expressly denied and had work from 2nd or 3rd gen dupes. I'm sure this is not unique to the Kinks and other artist suffer safe fate as well. The Japan labels make other inexplicable changes, I have a period copy of Thunderclap Newman's Hollywood Dream LP, nicely packaged et al. But, for some reason they fade out the centre piece track Accidents a third of the way through (as well as throwing a blanket over it) and move Something in the Air from side 2 to end side one, go figure. Its always a case of caveat emptor with Japanese pressings I find. But, somehow you can't beat a good obi 🙂and they are like a siren to tempt one onto the rocks. Keep up the good work. Russell.

@Russell__Smith thanks for your insight Russell... totally agree regarding Japanese pressings.. they are very hit and miss, however lately they have started pressing vinyl again at the Sony plant, and by all accounts they sound stellar so I might dip my toe in with a newer release. I have a couple of Japanese releases which are the exception though.. I have a Japanese Rumours by Fleetwood Mac which used the original Capitol metalwork, so it it not only has great sound, but also impeccable sound quality due to the superior Japanese vinyl. Thr other one I have us Pink Floyd's Wish you were here... this is an all analogue half speed master ftom 1980 and sounds better than the current BG mastered digital release, and also the original. Again, it's very suited to the super quiet Japanese vinyl.

You can add to the rotten sounding albums list, Hotter Than By Kiss. The engineering on that album was inept in the extreme and no good versions exist.

Yeah, bit of an oxymoron I know. I suppose I sit more towards the hate side with The Lamb but can't bring myself to get rid of it. It's not terrible, I just can't listen to it now I have 2 other better sounding pressings. It's not unlistenable, it's just very different. Regarding the others.. The Moodys record and Florence, they are bad. There's no excuse for keeping hold of the Moodys record other than the completest in me. I honestly never play it, unless I want to re mind myself of just how bad it is. Florence does get an outing if I want to listen to one or two tracks... It'll have to do until someone brings out a decent pressing of it, but I'm not holding my breath.
