Yep. I had a bulged round lock up a 1911 once. Sro showed me this trick. Im an instructor and I had never seen it in 30 years... cool one. Works. Check for damage before continuing to fire. Grip smack definitely provides more force than tugging on the slide, just gotta have a good grip on slide and make sure you grip the grip as you smack so you don't yeet your pistol downrange.

My dude that lady held the slide and hit the grip because the round was stuck, when you reload pistol if your seating depth is to long the bullet will get stuck in the free bore and the slide will not go all the way into battery, so you get a fail to fire and a stuck cartridge. She cleared it like a boss.
