I was driving the 192 Newcastle to Murton, it was about 20 past ten when I got to Gateshead high-street, I picked up about 20 passengers most of them drunk and not all of them bought a fair, I was busy picking up similar intoxicated passengers all the way back to my depot in Murton, it was after midnight when I was putting the bus through the bus wash that I saw a mans head rising above the back seat of the bus, the head and the rest of the intoxicated body came staggering towards me, Hey driver when do we get to Morpeth said the man I replied this bus does not go to Morpeth, he said you had Morpeth on the front when you arrived at Gateshead high street, I corrected him by showing him the destination board on the single decker bus Murton he exclaimed so which way is Morpeth from here I pointed him in a general northern direction and off he staggered to walk home, I hope he got there safe.

I remember this station well from my childhood. The bus numbers in this clip are the newer ones. When I was a kid, it was 46 to Darlington. 45 to Hartlepool. 42 to Crook. 55 to Middlesbrough. X1 to Durham.

I used to be a driver at worswick street (bensham) around 1974 /1975, good days them. Les jackson.

I arrived at 10.30pm May 3rd 1974 departed 1.30am 4th May 1974. A crazy street party fueld with crates of brown, tins of tartan and watneys party 7 It was the set off point for 100s of coaches. I was on a service bus that had been requisitioned to take tens of thousands of Newcastle fans to Wembley. Only time I ever got a bus from worsick Street. Looked strange seeing yellow double deckers with shop at binns on them heading down the A1. A night to remember. £1 return and the heater was broken.

This video brings back happy memories. We should get Worswick Street Bus Station back open again. I used the Bus Station a lot back then with my brother and my gran.

Has to be said, the bus stations weren't very nice back then. The one in Eldon Square was dark and full of exhaust fumes, and Worswick Street and Marlborough Crescent were always dirty and run down. I suppose the Haymarket was the least bad of them, but it wasn't amazing.

i remember in the late 90s i think it was they removed the advertising banners,stripped down the last one &they were adverts from probaly late 60s/early 70s.They were up for a while

Ay bonnie Lads an lassis I remember getting my bus to gateshead when I was a young wipper snapper. Bring back Worswick street bus station. It's still there just no buses.

Has to be said, Newcastle's bus stations weren't especially nice back then. The one in Eldon Square was dark and always full of fumes, and Worswick Street was always scruffy. Marlborough Crescent wasn't much different.
