Hi Rob. I think the way forward will definitely be everything battery. No fumes in the van. No fire risk. Very low noise levels so no sweaty ears in the summer. No blocked carbs with a10 fuel. No oil changes. Lighter machines. Battery tech is getting better all the time. Should be fine for all regular maintenance jobs. Less trips to the petrol station. If I was starting up now I would go all electric and let the customers know that as a marketing point Quieter for them and their neighbors. Good luck. Chris

I was very unsure about electric. Especially as a hedge trimmer. So I bought cheap, and Einhell. That was 3yrs ago and it's still going well for small jobs. I use it at least twice a week and it's ok. No where near as powerful as my other stuff but then I don't need the power all the time. I just wish they'd bring the price down to make it more affordable. Mainly because there is nothing wrong with my petrol stuff. Great the big shiny thing in the sky has come out.

Rob, don’t rule out the Stihl AK system battery equipment! I’ve owned AP and AK machines and decided quite a long time ago that I’m going to be sticking with the AK range. The difference in price just doesn’t warrant the AP range for small garden maintenance jobs, the quality is exactly the same - in fact a number of AK and AP machines have exactly the same motor in them!! Granted, an AP battery will run for longer than the equivalent AK, but at twice the price (and weight), you’re better off just buying a couple of extra AK batteries and a quick charger (they charge much quicker than an AP battery too). I think a lot of people new to battery equipment feel that they’re less powerful than they really are because you haven’t got a screaming two stroke engine going like the clappers to be honest! I’ve owned an HLA 56 for almost a year and have done a LOT of large hedge reductions with it without any issues at all. They’re expanding the AK range rapidly at the moment, check out the new KMA 80 R kombi unit, the FSA 80 R strimmer/brushcutter and the BGA 60 blower 👌 there’s also a 50cm extension bar that you can get for the HLA 56 (£35), and some nice new AK self propelled rear roller mowers.

Been using a KMA135r for a couple of years now ,I use it with a couple of the AP200 batteries and the fast charger as its a bit lighter with the AP200 batteries for hedge cutting and its been great, works well with the chainsaw attachment and strimmer (doesn't last very long with strimmer on full speed but low speed is normally enough for most things) haven't used the petrol Kombi engine since I got the KMA. (Just got a RMA 448TC mower cheap to give the battery mowers a try and that's a great bit of kit as well.) If you have access to power and a fast charger at customers properties the battery gear is fine if you don't you might need a few more batteries to last all day. Cheers Jason

Wouldn't be without my battery kit. Its had hard use for a year and hasn't missed a beat. The electric combi, hedge cutter, blower and chainsaw. Yes it has it's limitation but I'm well within them for gardening and they're vastly better than any domestic machines my clients have used. I find 2 slow chargers for the workshop, and one fast one for if I ever need to charge when I'm out works well. Ap200 batteries are lighter for the hedge trimmer and 2 last all day. I can start hedges early and not annoy the whole neighbourhood and they're just nicer to use and be around.

I contacted Stihl directly about this and they confirmed that the HLA 66 and HLA 56 have the exact same motor in them. The only difference is the HLA 66 runs at a stroke rate of 3000 r/min compared to 2800 r/min for the HLA 56 due to the larger capacity of the AP battery.

Hi Rob, love the battery gear, all mine run on the AP batteries, the KMA 135 R I use as a strimmer, blower & with the rotary cutter attachments, it flies through batteries as a strimmer and blower so you'd need 300s as a minimum but ideally a 500s, it's heavier than you think too, I'm not sure I'd like it as a hedge cutter, I have dedicated Stihl battery hedgecutters, for that, the hsa86 hand held, and both the hla66 and 86 long reach, they will run almost all day on a battery , the hand held is better balanced with a AP200 battery tho but the hedgecutters are so much nicer to use than the petrol, no 1 for the lack of noise and fumes, especially with the hand held, and no2 the weight, that been said I still have petrol ones in the fleet for the rough and very thick stuff, but the battery does probably 90% of everything I do.

What you need is a older Honda HR214 or HR215. These are the Rolls-Royce for mowers, the cutt quailty and bagging is the best. The aluminum deck is shaped in a unique way. You will need to empty the bag frequently because of so much grass and the moisture. The best parts it's self propelled has a blade clutch and a drive shaft that turns the transmission(no belts).
