I own this kit. It’s a game changer! For years I prayed this would be made. I paid 300 dollars on eBay for a stainless steel Swedish mess kit just because it was stainless the kit was complete and in new condition. This heavy cover set I think I paid 147 for and it has way more volume and functionality and at a fraction of the weight! It’s awesome and it’s a major part of my long trip bag. This product is more exciting to me than any other titanium outdoor product that’s come out so far.

How would/could you modify a aluminum Swedish windshield so this heavy cover 1.5 Liter pot could fit down into it and work well enough with a trangia burner? Aluminum is fairly easy to cut and bend etc, If the pot is slightly too wide, couldn’t you cut down through the front of the windshield and bend it open a little? I’ve seen people make a small slot around the top rim on the back of the aluminum windshield so the pan handle isn’t right above where the flames come out

I am set, I already own Two of the TI canteen kits, a TI stove, fork, spoon, pot, and pan. Carries just enough water, and provides plenty to cook, and eat with. Worth every penny imo to save weight for something extra. TI is my fav for on the go, but I love my cast iron for base camps.

The USGI Canteen, cup, lid and stove has been perfect for me since I was 12 back in 1980's. It all fits in the USGI 1 quart canteen cover. The newer Molle Canteen cover is even better with dual pockets and a larger main compartment.

I think this is a great addition to a standard canteen and mess kit for extending its range to the winter months when you may be melting ice or snow for water...and a bit more room when you may be making a 2-3 person meal. When I just using mountain house type meals the standard Keith's cup is great and a 220ml tie cup nests inside with an alcohol stove and fuel bottle, maybe a fuel tab or 2

I would guess you know but the US mess kit is not a cook kit. It was meant primarily for holding your portion of cooked food that was brought up from the rear or going thru a mess line at a field kitchen. If you are in too serious of a situation to bring forward cooked food then then they likely did not want you lighting individual fires. That was t he point of K rations, to give you something to eat when hot food could not be brought up.

Just to expand on my own comment. I served in the US Army in the late 80's and sometimes we got C Rations and sometimes we got the new MRE's. Originally, the food itself was similar and the new style MRE's mostly just did away with the metal cans and went with plastic pouches. Then they came out with the chemical heaters and have since expanded the menu range. I think I was issued a mess kit but do not remember carrying it or using it much if at all. I typically had two canteens and that meant two canteen cups. One was for hygene and one was for food/drinking. If we had a field kitchen, I think we had paper plates or metal trays. The trays would be cleaned in metal garbage cans that had kerosene immersion heaters in them. When food was brought up in insulated mermite cans and drink dispensers. We had our canteen cups and likely paper plates. I do not recall ever being allowed to just start a fire when I wanted to. We had sort of a semi reusable stove that used solid fuel tabs that you could heat your canteen cup with and later they came out with the chemical heater pouches for the MRE's.

Yep .. out in the field, especially when eating before moving into a TB (Temporary Base) for the night, rustling up a cosy fire to cook on and sit around, was rather frowned upon.

I am so used to the swedish M40 SS Messkit and I love it. Titanium can be a thing considering weight for example. I know the do remakes of the swedish kit in aluminum and lately there is a stainless steel coming up soon. When somebody make a M40 in titanium I will get it for sure. Until then I stay with the bombproof but heavy swedish army messkit.

Boundless Voyage 800 ml ti bottle, Firebox nano ti, toaks 1100 ml ti pot w/ bail handle, toaks 550 ml ti cup, and gsi ultra light coffee drip screen is a great multi functional UL kit in my opinion.

Titanium has it's advantages regarding weight savings and great if you're one of those Ultralight 'if it's Tuesday, I'm another 50km down the Trail' People. Me .. I'm too old now for that sort of Violence and it's priced way beyond the depth of my pockets .. and the traditional gear that I use (with a few extra bits to complement it) works just fine .. and .. has been paid for long time. If my pockets were trenches .. maybe .. but then .. perhaps not. That said, it's still nice to watch these reviews .. nothing wrong with 'window shopping' .. did it plenty in the 60's and there is no need to 'hate' someone else's preferences .. each to their own. I own one and live it. It saves weight so much so that it allows me to carry other items in my pack. It works great. I use mine with a trangia stove placed under a jolmo lander canteen stove stand. All work real well together. It also allows me to put the pot on bail handle over a fire while cooking something separate in the pan. Yes expensive but long run worth it. Super easy cleaning ti too.

I have the kit works great. There's nothing wrong with the functionality of the kit . Only price, but you get your paying for titanium lighter weight gear . I know it's not for everyone. I also have kits in stainless steel, and I don't mind the weight of them I guess it all down to ones personal preference. Thanks for the video

I own it and pathfinder canteen sets. Both stainless and titanium. I also have a dozen or more Swedish m40 kits and the hard to find polish stainless mess kits. German kits. Swiss kits. French kits. Many more. I use my stainless m40 kit most of all. If the heavy cover was made to fit the m40 windshield setup it would be perfect. But it doesn’t. As for the canteen sets it’s ok but the pot needs to be bigger imo but works good for what it is. A compact cooking kit with canteen. I’d say if I was on a budget I’d get the Swedish mess kit in aluminum or stainless steel if you can afford it. If titanium is your thing than this will be good for you.

I used military mess kit back in the 80-90s (I was in army) actually used it VERY busy infrequent. Probably just a few times during 1st year. It was hard to clean because if the grooves and nooks/crannies) afterwards we had mres which basically required no kit at all. Just bayonet to open package.

Good video. I store the lid in the pot with my fire box nano other items. I look at this as a kidney shaped bush pot with a cup. I don’t use it a lot so it may be what you called bushcraft bling. But it’s a good piece of kit for 2 people. For solo I use pathfinder ti bottle and cup. Thanks for another fine review

I think this would be okay for car camping or day hikes but even though it’s light weight, it’s bulk is probably not something trail hikers would want to carry. Re-enactors might enjoy it though. Looks period correct without the weight. I think it’s nice that folks have so many choices these days as to what they want in their kit.

This kit is tall compared to most European surplus mess tins, but it's also narrower. Only the Swiss mess tin is taller. Tall narrow pots cook less efficiently than shorter wider pot. One plus is the butterfly handles on the main pot makes it.easier to pour hot liquids out of. I agree it would have been nice for the handle to lock in place on the small pan, but none of the authentic surplus kits do either. For the price I would have hoped it would have included an inner bowl like the German or Austrian kits. The lid is a nice touch.

I don’t think this is the most efficient pot for boiling. But I appreciate the handles, bail and duel use lid. The capacity is enough to melt snow or make food for three people. The kidney shape packs nicely outside or inside a pack. Must of all, it fits a tall titanium windscreen, titanium alcohol stove, titanium pot stand, a coffee grinder, a double wall mug, a coffee filter and coffee- with room to spare. It organizes a large number of items vertically- which is more efficient than trying to fit round things next to each other in short-wide pots. I know that the zebra billy can do this but this is a lot lighter for high mileage hiking.

I was using it with a sidewinder cone from trail designs. It was for a 160mm diameter snow peak cook and save. Wide enough to allow me to put down the alcohol store and fit the mess kit pit inside the cone on top of the stove.

The dutch/ english/ australian mess tins are about the same. Use this from my militairy days ( 1978) Ok, but the second set... Pan and skillet in one... First on an Optimus 8R, then whisperlite.. and now i bought an svea123 just for the nostalgic feeling...

I'll wait for the Big 3 comparison video before I draw any conclusions. But, I personally don't see the need to spend a lot of money on titanium cookware. I use the Pathfinder stainless steel kit and that works perfectly well for me. I don't see the need to spend big bucks on titanium products. I don't hate titanium and if someone wants to gift me titanium kit, I'll be glad to use it, but I'll just keep using my stainless steel stuff. I'm happy with it.

Excellent review. I'm not a fan of titanium for cooking unless it's just basic boiling type foods. I'll stick to my Stanley sets at a tenth of the price! I also don't like having my water bottle in my cook kit. I like my water bottle on the very outside of my pack, like a side mesh pocket. But I want to keep my cook kit on the inside of my pack where it can stay cleaner and not get banged around.

my thoughts on titanium cookware, good for boiling water and thats it without modding them in some way.. for instance, stainless steel mesh shaped like the bottom of the pan, frying to keep your sausages and stuff off the surface of the cookware. otherwise spend all night trying to clean them out.

Yeah the whole Titanium thing and saving weight, I understand. I have Toaks cups with lids, I've tried a ti Mont Bell pot but the problem with titanium IMHO is the thinness and heat transfer. It's so easy to scorch your food and then burn your fingers on those lightweight things. As for the military stuff, there are lots of tiny crevices that are hard to clean in the bush. I think my best combination that I use is my Trangia with my Esbit triangle. (mine was cheap). As for the pot, I LOVE my MSR Stowaway Pot (the smallest). It cooks like a dream, the long folder handle stays cool and it has no place for food to hide. The only drawback is that because it has no lip on the outside, it pours hot water poorly. It is a bit heavier but it really is quality stainless steel.

I’m totally with you, I have a Trangia Triangle (again from before they were silly money) and an MSR Stowaway pot. It’s a cracking system, the stove and quite a bit of food can be stored in the pot, it’s incredibly robust and easy to clean. I also have ultralight Ti from Evernew which if I need to go fast and light I would use instead but it’s just for boiling water and rehydration of food pouches.

I imported this mess kit into UK. I wanted a military style mess kit but I was worried about the German mess kits made from aluminium that are cheap and plentiful. The Swedish M40 is £130 to £190 on eBay depending on the condition. So it was a no brainer for me.

I'm not going to buy this, much as I love Ti and mess kits, It's not really got anything that I don't get with my Pathfinder Ti canteen (which I love). I've also got a similar Ti kit with a stove stand, which is just a little smaller, but still has the bail and handles, so the niche that this kit would fit in is already filled.

The thermal conductivity of titanium is quite low compared to aluminum or stainless steel. That means you have to use a lot more fuel to heat your food the same amount

I have the Maxi titanium Canteen cup which has a larger capacity ( 950 ml / or 32.1 oz ) then the Heavy Cover (700ml / or 23.7 oz ) Titanium Canteen cup. I have both cups and I really like the extra capacity of the Maxi Titanium.

I'm so old that I was issued one of the US Mess Kits. It was garbage, and the Military didn't use them although we were issued them. I did like the spoon though. Whenever we got hot chow in the field we ate off of paper plates. More Hygienic.

My only problem with the canteen kits is the seem that holds the tip and bottom portions of the canteen together . Seems like a good place to develope a leak . Maybe I'm paranoid . I have trust issues..

Just another product for people with money to burn, who care more about the show than the experience. Zebra belly holds my kettle, fire starters, plus, other things, and i can do just as much or more with that kit for a third of the price. Not everyone has an endless supply of money, and the outdoors can be enjoyed just as much or more without all the latest gadgets. If you look at it from a consumer stand point there's no real difference the average hiker/camper will benefit from having a titanium waterbottle or nesting cup vs a stainless steel set cause i can tell you the average consumer will go for the more affordable option. Even at half the price 46-50$ vs less then 25$ on average or if you look around you can find unissued milsurp canteen cups for little over 20$ or you can get a regular stainless steel nesting cup for less then 20$ even cheaper if you go to walmart. Im not sold on titanium and still think its overpriced and overhyped by people.

I am no fan of messkits! I had to use a similar aluminum one (Gamelle) in the army (Swiss) and think it is too big/heavy and complicated for my solo-camping needs. If you are cooking for two or need to melt lots of snow, then it might come in handy. The Keith canteen & cup set is almost perfect for my needs!

I don't mind a bit of Titanium. I dont know if I'd replace my smart water bottle with a titanium canteen, maybe, but they all seem expensive. I have replaced stainless cups and pits with a couple titanium mugs, that works well. A 350ml for boiling water for coffee, a 550ml for boiling water for food. They cost under £30 a piece. So on the whole? I dont know if the set in this video would be as flexible as what I already use tbh.

Looks to me like they were banking so hard on the fact that it's titanium, they didn't give a rip about the fact that it's just a poorly designed knock off of a WW2 German mess kit. The lid doesn't look to fit right, the handle on the pan doesn't lock, (which I easily remedied on my German mess kit with an imaginatively bent piece of wire coat hanger, which can't be done on the Heavy Cover). So thanks much for saving me 150.00! One thing I would like to know, cause I know you own both, is does the Svea 123 fit inside? Thanks sir! Jerry

The kit seems to be Ok. I do not think that it gives enough value for the money. I went for something like the Keith mess kit with a canteen and I am satisfied with it. For me part of the nostalgia of the old mess kits is the material.

Is it bling if nobody else ever sees it?? I got the pot/pan/lid combo in TI for about $50 and I like it a lot. Didn’t see the need for the TI canteen. I like the stainless set just fine too, used one for over 10 years. Sure it was more expensive, but it’s what I wanted to use. Lots of negativity in the comments about people enjoying their hobby.

I heard that titanium is a bad conductor. That's why chefs use steel. Obviously heavy but I'd just take a small carbon steel omelette pan for the non stick abilities

Exactly what I've heard and another factor which stops me buying a Ti mess kit/canteen/pans, the other 2 being price and relative lack of robustness as opposed to stainless. I will stick with my Dutch Army canteen cup and one of the 2 stainless mess tins - also Dutch issue - which are built like tanks and practical.

Upvoting the honest review not the product. It just isn't very well thought out. They could have just copied the german/swiss ww2 cookset in titanium and had a better product. If it doesn't fit a water bottle, it would fit your food bag - so the space isn't saved. I prefer mine to fit my water bottle though. This ones a no from me - and I'm a fan of (good) titanium cookwear.

Yep, over priced bling, for what you get. I have used the old German M31 mess kit for years and it just works. Okay its "Heavy" but I don't care. I've been carrying stuff on my back for more years then I care to think about. So in my case its not heavy. Its part of the kit. Yeah, I wish it had a "Lid" but that's no biggie for me. Any ways stay safe, winter has closed in where I live so I'm stuck inside. Later all.

It kind of does have a lid which can be used as a frying pan or small pan or even cup, or placed on top of the deep pot with contents which are also heated, or used as a cover/lid. The post-war German mess kits, both West and East German army issue, have a further small pan which nests inside the deep pot, as such the whole kit is extremely versatile.

Ernie, I would say no to this messkit. I already have pots, pans and other mess kits that meet my needs. Nor am I a gram weenie and I do enjoy using my M40 Swedish Stainless Steel cook kit. Price is another negative. I much rather would spend my money on good food/other consumables and spend more time hiking/camping. And, why would I want to indirectly support a regime that supports slave labor?

The big issue with titanium is one needs to have an even heat source from center to edge of the cookware - otherwise you will have burnt, ideally cooked, and undercooked areas of food. This isn’t as evident with boiling water as the heated water circulates around with an even temperature distribution in the water. You can get evenly cooked food with titanium cookware, but you have to be constantly stirring it or adjusting it’s position, otherwise you’ll get burnt; properly cooked; and under cooked areas in the same piece of food. Heat distribution is superior in iron, stainless steel and aluminum among other materials.

I love titanium cookware. I hate titanium mess kits. There's not much point. They are way too bulky and heavy. Just get a Toaks pot, and maybe a smaller titanium cup to nest inside.

Bigger is better. That size and style is million times tested in every place where can go. All european armys used and still use that. When need carry lot of water or boil it, you are in trouble with small fancy cup. Or you catch some food to carry.

So many relatively spendy, bushcrafty-targeted, non essential bling items out there that are just trendy. Regarding nostalgia-looks/feels... having a no-fit scenario with the vintage models like Swedish svea/trangia military spirit-burner cooker makes this somewhat irrelevant in terms of lighter weight upgrading. Placing this atop today's more typical fire box type stoves is less than optimal geometry, balance, and efficiency.

It's not a mess kit! A mess kit is a 2 piece flat plate set designed by the military to be carried through a chow line along with your military eating utensils. What you have is simply a cook pot and lid. And, titanium is lousy for cooking. It's hype!

By definition that's correct since a ''mess'' is a canteen in military parlance and ''messing'' extends to field kitchen usage, but in the British Army and others (e.g. Dutch, German army) the issue mess kits were actually designed for both scenarios, field kitchens if possible or individual ration heating/water boiling when the field kitchen wasn't accessible.

Being for sure. I'm not the biggest Ti fan but it has its uses. This piece is poorly designed, poor functionality, and everything seems like an afterthought with the exception of those nice butterfly handles. Those are nice but everything else is a flop .
