Hey Mack, check out the indie horror game "Still Wakes the Deep", it's free on Game Pass. Should have definitely been on the Indie GOTY list. It's like the movie "The Thing" set on a giant oil rig in the 1970's, with a bunch of Scottish roughnecks swearing the whole game. It's absolutely fantastic.

Really depends. Personally I had a decent amount of games I enjoyed a lot this year. P3R, LAD Infinite Wealth, DD2 and Metaphor. I like that a few of them are getting some recognition this year. I like you Mack but just because you don't like Soul games and Fighting games doesnt mean they are bad games. Wukong is one if the best souls games of all time, Tekken 8 elevated even more the franchise after the success of 7 and Final Fantasy Rebirth is just amazing. Monster hunter franchise is one of the best in the industry, Monster hunter World/Iceborne was epic and everyone expects them to deliver with Wilds. But i agree that it was a shit year for AAA games and their indie choises for game of the year is a disgrace.

Gameplay is fairly basic, but seeing how the different parts of the massive oil rig work is very cool and seems realistic. The monsters are terrific and scary AF in my opinion. It's basically the movie "The Thing" on a giant oil rig in the middle of the ocean.

I think this list is interesting because how often Wukong shows up. I consider that game a good example of a passing grade. Its fun, no controversies, runs okay, no aggressive monetisation and was not overhyped. This is baseline. Yet it shows up in half of the categories to be the best this year had to offer. That is just sad.

The lists are a travesty but discounting games off a style or genre you don't like is incredibly disingenuous. Metaphor for RPG's is probably one of the best RPG's to come out this year. Dragons dogma 2 is also fantastic. If you like that style and many people do, then I can see why it's on there. Just because you don't like a game doesn't mean plenty of people don't or that the game is bad. The main problem with the nominees is the odd picks that don't belong there. Shadow of the Erdtree is also a phenomenal DLC. however a DLC should not win game of the year. It should have it's own category. overall Game of the year is pretty meaningless and a sham but it does feel extra meaningless this year.

Agreed. And the file size is probably the single most impressive thing about the game. A 20~40 hour game whose entire file is less than the size of a single texture in a AAA game is really impressive. Most Indie devs who use off-the-shelf tool like Unity3D or GameMaker to make 2D pixel-art platformers end up with baffling 1 GB file sizes. This game is a single 33 MB executable (no external images, audio files, _nothing_ ). I think the developers of AAA bloatware like COD could stand to take lessons.

Mack, at least play the damn games or try to understand why people may enjoy them before you write them off. Animal well and Balatro are brilliant games you completely maligned here because you couldn’t be bothered to do five minutes of research. Textbook definition of reading a book by its cover. Ultimately that is a failure on your behalf as a reviewer every time you do that (and honestly you do it an awful lot). That attitude towards unfamiliar games creates an extremely narrow minded approach on video games as a whole. Furthermore you miss out on many well crafted, passionate games all because of your unjustified cynicism towards anything slightly out of your comfort zone. At the very very very least you could just say the game doesn’t interest you and move along without the snarky dismissive comments about a game you clearly know absolutely nothing about in order to make a fair judgment. It damages all your credibility as a reviewer and makes you come across as pretentious, far more than you seem to realise.

It's the same as baldur's gate and other games which don't get mainstream attention. Tbc games are hard to get into for an average gamer. They only look at the surface level flashiness when the true fun lies in the strategising every move and thinking ahead.

Mack, I love you. One of very few people I trust for reviews. But some games here are good. Ballatro is superb. Also this “console game” stuff is a bit stupid. Without console gaming the industry would be about twenty years behind where it is today - whether you like console gaming or not. Without the mass market appeal of consoles, gaming wouldn’t be anywhere near - NOT EVEN CLOSE - to where it is today. All the top quality games around today, like RDR2, etc, wouldn’t exist without console gaming. I know PC is obviously the best way to play games but let’s not pretend the industry would be anywhere near where it is today without console gaming.

Manor Lords is still in Early Access, so shouldn't be included in any awards (BG3 wasn't until it had fully launched). The fact they are including it in multiple categories says more about the quality of full games released this year.

I've been replaying Manor Lords again recently, since multiple updates... still has a long way to go imo. The market system in particular is still hot garbage. The whole 'the residents can open their own prefered market stall wherever they like (in a market zone) needs to be ripped out and instead replaced with a system that allows players to select; who opens a stall (addressed), where they work (addressed) where the stall opens (partly addressed, by placeable market zones) and what they sell (good luck with that, although it can be accomplished, but only via tortuous determination). DIstribution of goods between various warehouses also needs finer tuning/limits. And an overlay that shows which residents are not assigned jobs, rather than having to search each house. Also, when making a new map, I'd like to be able to chose which of the regions I start in. Lot's of QoL stuff like that is needed. Still, I'm glad it exists and look forward to further developments.

WAB, I remember, years ago, someone in a pub claiming that Asda has been voted best grocer in the Uk. I asked who had run the campaign? Turns out it was an organisation that only had the main corporate supermarket companies, telling the general population who the best grocer was. I even went to the website of the organisation and they listed their participants.
