In the early 1980s I worked on the USS Glacier Icebreaker it had the largest DC motor ever put on a ship yes it was damn big a muff coupling Bolt dropped about 4 in damn near took my finger off the bolt probably weighed 150 lb note to self Randy don't put your damn finger under Bolt

Ouch yeah they seem awful heavy boat motors have always fascinated me don't seem them outside ships to often its cool to see and really gives you a idea of just how big some of these ships were

Mostly because the power needs back then are far far different from those that run off the grid now so even if it made it's own energy it's too much of a hassle to convert it into stuff modern equipment can use I'm not an electrician so I don't know the extra terms but many shows have these and it's always the question that gets asked
