Say hey! I played an orc hunter back in WOTLK, mostly survival spec! And I used a wolf, but cats were largely underappreciated in comparison. I found that their frenzy/ shark bite ability pumped out tremendous pushback against casters when used in conjunction with rogue dpsers, or even a fury warrior. Pushback really was useful against casters, believe it or not, because the longer time between spell casts means more damage done, less damage taken, hence more mana for heals to work with. Some boss fights would come down to that last heal and every drop of mana was precious. A big challenge for hunters at the time was that they could pull a boss off a tank like absolutely nothing [explosive-shot crits usu], and back then bosses generally immediately charged healers instantaneously. Mana depletion was also quick to ensue unless hunters spaced their shots with mini time gaps. One huge thing for hunters was a [pet derived?] ability to generate mana for healers, which was really super useful in tight fights. Thank you so much for the excellent explanations and explorations of the hunter-class build of the era, it brings back dear memories of that exciting and innovative period in WoW. Blizzard came out with such a bold and brilliant expansion. Arthas was one bad dude man, an absolutely gripping antagonist if there ever was one! Oh yeah, one last thing about that classical era of interest to any serious gamers out there: subtlety rogues in full gladiator PVP gear could literally out dps hunters in boss fights. Don't ask me why, I don't know why, but I swear they could! We used to invite this freakin bad-ass undead rogue named Postmortem to our Saturday morning guild raid, and he danced around like a ballet dude, but he would just light up the board!

Great video! You missed the importance of Viper Sting. It's not usable in every encounter of course, but you can throw it up on off-targets and trash mobs with mana bars in order to keep spamming your spells. Throw it up while running towards trash before tanks have enough threat to safely volley. I used to use it with a focus macro to brain-dead get it on a secondary target instead of a steady shot. Especially at low gear levels Viper sting can keep you competitive as you'll never have to go into Aspect of the Viper on encounters where there is a secondary target with a mana bar. I also used to have 3-5 Misdirect macros, one for each tank, one for pet. Having just the main tank for MD was sub-optimal, especially for handling surprise threat wipes like the main tank dying, or being on the wrong side of the room to handle a mob. Also, glad to see people finally got the memo that Explosive Shot > Everything else. I wrote the original EJ forum post (it was like 3 pages long of math) on why that was important XD. People used to put up black arrow first and I saw two recent guides that still suggest this (ugh).

@@freedmfe8934 I think I leveled BM mostly, but I switched to survival before level 80 to familiarize myself with the cooldowns and rotation (I raided 4 hours after hitting 80). I think once you get explosive shot survival is great for leveling… I can’t comment on if it’s any good before that. Also, once you get explosive shot, your pet is going to be useless for Agro if you’re single targeting. Send it at two other targets to kite/get threat, then kill a third target yourself while your pet builds agro on the other two.

One bit of information that was missed in the rotation for max single target DPS... When you get a lock n load proc? Cast a rank 4 Explosive Shot, then rank 3 Explosive Shot, followed by rank 4 Explosive Shot again. As both rank 4 and rank 3 can be active on the target at the same time without clipping... This is called a 434 rotation. Otherwise spot on, nice guide.

Don't macro cancelaura deterrence on deterrence itself. You will instantly cancel it after popping it. Instead macro cancelaura deterrence on your main damage ability so it cancels when you want to do damage.

survival/mm hunter in wotlk by far is one of the most fun classes. Love the priority rotation. So much smoother than timing steady shot. Having the big mix of spell damage and being ranged and mobile. Extremely scalable in pvp but also extremely skill dependent.

@@bombademar4711 it's only melee when you don't know how to play it. I spend a solid 90% of my time at ranged running, dotting, and rotting. You legit have 3 melee abilities: wingclip, kick, and raptor strike. All the rest of your kit is ranged, and even raptor strike can temporarily be made to be ranged. However retail just is a shitty gaming experience over all. The layering of leggos, soulbinds, borrowed power, and tier sets makes the damage utterly stupid, gimmicky, and very 1 shot oriented. It feels more stressful to play than fun. I haven't logged onto retail since about a month before wrath

I am a survival main on wotlk and i have to say that your guide about survival is pretty accurate. Generaly people dont know much about survival on wotlk private servers because everybody plays marksman so your knowledge suprises me. 1 thing i would like to add about your guide is the importancy about "Lock and Load"(lal). In short the pure single target performance from survival stays and falls with this talent and whether or not it proccs when your frosttrap will trigger it when u place it under the boss. If lal doesnt procc after the boss triggered your frosttrap, our pure single target is slightly better than average at best but if it does procc it then survival is gonna be crazy good in wrath. Even in ICC BIS Gear belive it or not, will survival deal more dps in a longer fight than marksman. Ofc that depends if you can trapweave properly btw. Survival simply scales way to good with stats and will reach way higher ap values than marksman which means that your aoe and sustained single target will always be better than marksman. On the other hand will marksman Burst way more than survival and it doesnt lock you in playing meele because of your traps. Also has marksman the highest attackrange with fire from all ranges. I just hope that lal will procc on bosses with frosttrap, otherwise i need to learn a new main. Also i forgot to mention how bad it feels to press black arrow. This spell is beyond garbage and just tilts me. I mean yeah cool 6% more damage but who cares if you share cd with explosive trap. What a tragedy.

Frost trap cant proc Lock n Load on bosses mate, simply because they are immune to snares. This is just a private server thing, to proc the talent with frost traps. I am 100% sure that for pve your procs come from black arrow/explosive trap. Also surv will never do more single target dmg than marks as soon as armor pen values go up. Yea you have more ap as surv, but armor pen and most importantly readinnes will always pull marks ahead. 1 extra rapid fire, aimed, chimera will give u a ton of extra damage. Even if frost trap would proc LaL, marks is still better pretty much from the end of Ulduar

@@floreaciprian9742 Apparently u didnt play on wotlk when it was first announced. Frosttrap on bosses did procc LaL but they patched it out in 3.2.0. So thats why i hope they decide to not keep that change and let frosttrap procc LaL on bosses, because otherwise the specc feels incomplete and sad to play because u have to rely on random proccs. Also i dont understand why marksman should start to deal more damage than survival because of ARP ? Survival plays in icc the same bis items as marksman with the exception of trinkets also u dont need arp gems like marksman for arp cap. Thats why u still have around 900 ARP as Survival which greatly increases your physical attacks + the way higher ap stat. Also is ARP not even a really good stat for Marksman because they also have a good amount of nature damage. ARP simply scales the best from all stats but its not that good of a stat compared to a fury warrior. Chimera shot for example doesnt even scale with ARP and for reference a higher ap value is not even bad compared to arp cap. I tested my icc bis hunter on marksman and survival and my survival had around 3-4k more ap raid buffed. This resulted into physical spells with high ap scaling dealing the same amount of damage as if they had arp cap. Deadly shot for example dealt the same amount of damage on my BIS Survival and my BIS Marksman. The only spells dealing more damage with ARP Cap were for example steady shot and aimed shot, because their scaling was pretty low and also u have more autoattacks overall because of rapid fire and they dealt slightly more than survivals. I have really 0 idea why people think Marksman deals more damage than survival in a long fight. Also i didnt even mention how hard you go oom as marksman compared to survival btw. Ahh and your survival pet deals around 30-40% more damage than marksman pet.

@@adept1814 yes i know it was changed in 3.2. The game will be realesed on its final 3.3.5 version so it wouldnt make sense for them to ignore that patch update. Armor pen is great for marksman cause your top damage abilities will be piercing shots, auto attack and steady. Yes chimera. sting and wild quiver are all nature damage, but those first 3 abilities deal most of your damage. You do end up having more ap as survival, its just that the spells dont scales as good with ap (explosive shot) as piercing shots, autos and steady scale with armor pen. If you are at around 800+ arpen (which is soft cap), survival may come close, but once capped at 1400 marks will beat surv in any scenario. Also if you have mana issues you can take Rapid recuperation and that will help a ton. Not to mention that in an 5+ minute fight you can use 4 rapid fire, as you bring the cd down to 3 mins. First at pull. You do insta readinnes after cds, so you are rapid fire first 30 sec. Then around 3min 40s into the fight you have both rapid fire and readinnes up. So you use ur 3 rapid fire as soon as it comes up, and the 4th when you readinnes the second time during execute phase to get an extra kill shot in as well. Marks is simply better no matter how you look at it and dont get me wrong i like surv way better

I am happy that u can argue with arguments so let me evaluate them a bit. Piercing shot DAMAGE does not scale with ARP because its a bleed. Also it only triggers from Steady,Aimed and Chimera which makes this spell only benefit for 66% from ARP. The top damage abilites are only at the top because of arp in general, with the exception of auto attacks, they are always p1 because every other ability from marksman has pretty high cd and with the amount of haste you get with rapid fire, your auto attacks have simply the highest dps. With 0 arp i would guess that chimera is p2 in damage if you add up both damage instances of this spell. Spells dont scale well with ap is for most spells true but explosive trap has a crazy high ap scaling and explosive shot has the same scaling as chimera shot which is AP*0.42 and in my opinion thats really good, because if you include the fact that the damage from those spells is not physical, they are being amplified by debuffs such as curse of elements, which is a huge damage boost. My BIS hunter on warmane with 30% buff did around 40-50k with 1 explosive shot in burst. If you preproc your traps on lichking you instantly trigger lock and load which means you deal 40-50k 3 times in 3 gcds, which is crazy in my opinion. Also dont forget the crazy high explosive trap damage. If you play your trapweave perfect as survival your explosive shot deals around 30-35% of your overall damage. Auto shot deals around 20% and explosive trap is p3 with around 15%. For the mana thing with Rapid recuperation thats indeed a legit way of avoiding going oom early, but putting your talentpoints in it + reducing rapid fire cd with more talent points, forces you to not being able to put these points in damage increase talents. Which lowers your burst dps(the strongest phase for marksman), because you cant pick the increased explosive trap damage talent. (Explosive trap playstyle is in my opinion the highest dps output for marksman as well as for survival, because you can easily get 3 explosive traps going with readinnes on bosses like lichking, which is insane), but i am not sure how exactly they will code this trap because if it triggers the damage field it provides shouldnt disappear if you place another explosive trap. Also with this playstyle you do not "overcap" in mana with Rapid recuperation in your burst, which makes the talent more valuable.

Ofc. when LnL proc use it like: Explo> Aimed Shot> Explo> wait 1,30sec> Explo No more steady shot no less, that is perfect rotation for Survi Hunter imo.

I came back for wrath surv. If doing pvp, especially arena I highly suggest a wasp... u may lose pet dps, but the anti stealth sting is amazing and very useful. Also sending em out and bringing em back to use charge as a CC is very useful too

During live i always led with Black Arrow. Quicker chance at a locknload, longest CD spell, got it back off CD quicker. I did Black arrow, Exp, Serp, and so on. Worked out pretty good for me.

You should be able to bind things like pet attack and pet follow to a key directly, so no need for a macro for those. Same should apply to Call of the Wild. For pet abilities, you can leave the "activated" pet abilities off the pet bar and put only the ones you want to use manually on the pet bar, and then bind them. Also if you have auto-self cast, Master's Call should be applying to you automatically on use, though the mouseover macro is great for helping friends out.

The only problem with using viper when steady shotting is when your explosive shot dot is ticking, swapping into viper will gimp the last 2 hits. So you should get 1 steady shot in before you go to viper? Might take some proper testing.

If you're running this as a single target spec, you will not ever use Wyvern Sting, so I am not sure why you're specc'd into this at all. P1, you can go all in with Expose Weakness and have some leftover for whatever you think can be useful, such as 2/2 go for the throat or 1/2 with 2/2 Rapid Killing

I was a Beast Master main back in the day and was wrecking with dps. You have to have good Macros and a strong pet. I was in the top 3 dps at all time even being 1st at time's. I hope to remember how I did it in the day I just loved BM even when they said it was trash.

14:01 If Black Arrow gives a 6% damage buff, which it does, then why wouldn't you cast it first? Black Arrow - Serpent Sting (for 14 seconds of 6% increase) then Explosive Shot for 6% increased damage. I don't understand why everyone says Explosive Shot first. Am I missing something?

It's because Explosive Shot does so much damage you don't ever want to delay it. It's not worth delaying it just to add a couple damage modifiers because you increase the chance you end up casting fewer Explosive Shots over the course of the fight than you could have if you didn't delay it, which cancels out any gain from the damage modifiers.

Orc's are the best hunters but I prefer Dwarf's for Hardcore due to stoneform, getting rid of debuff's/bleed's and increasing damage mitigation during clutch moments can save your life. Just the other day I was questing at level 54 and accidentally pulled 2 extra mobs from behind and ended up surviving with around 5% hp. I would have easily died if not for stoneform in that situation.

I'd love to see a more detailed resource on trap weaving, struggling to find much on the internet at the mo but this is a great guide! I personally loved the extra tech that melee weaving brought in classic/TBC for the class and would like to know more about trap weaving.

Leveling a hunter as BM has been fun but im 71 on a pr and wana checkout survival. I did tey MM a few levels in my mid 60s but i have shit gear and preferred bm. Survival looks more engaging to me

Thing about exp shot is not true, it was not stacking like you saying at wrath start but at 3.3.5 (as i can remember in Ulduar already) you could just spam exp shots and dmg would just stack.

How much does Nightelf get boosted as Race, if you consider you could actually use 3 pots in a fight? 1 precast, 1 in fight and if you shadowmeld, you actually can use a 3rd one. Or does it not matter at all

melee weaving is a DPS gain, but not by a significant margin. You will be fine playing fights as ranged only

@@Riokaii I think you will lose alot more when you arent able to place traps. Yes the melee weaving is not a huge dps gain, but being able to play melee, it means you can place traps. So if you ignore all these and you play purely ranged, you will lose huge dps just by doing Black Arrows and not traps.

I played survival the entire wrath expansion live, and only switched to MM to try it out, didn't really like it. I didn't have any problem keeping up with/beating the armor pen capped MM hunters of the time, as survival.

Why do you need to stagger explosive shots? I remember wondering if it mattered back in the day and having multiple sources confirm that any overlap of the debuff just adds the residual damage to the new dot, resulting in the exact same damage either way.

@@GhlyMasta 100%. I can't remember the exact figures, but I think it was something along the lines of it'll add on up to 5 seconds if you refresh a DoT. Might be a bit less, but it did roll over during Cata. There's still SOME wastage if you manage 100% uptime (since you could in theory have used a GCD on something else here and there) but when its not 100% uptime its 100% a DPS increase.

Yes, instead of getting all 3 ticks of dmg per explosive shot, you can clip one of the ticks off. I just make sure to weave any gcd/steady shot between

@@brandonkruse6412 It doesn't fall off as hard as you think. There are many bosses where SV does great dps. Right now I play both as MM and SV in a private server. After many raids and tests, the dps diffrence is 1.2k dps. It's not small but also not a huge difference imo.

Arcane shot and explosive shot share CD.. you dont want to sue Arcane shot cuz it will mess up your Explosive shot CD

Hunters start off insanely good in Naxx and Ulduar as SV. Then when TOC and ICC comes they swap to MM. They are not top dps anymore compared to Ulduar but they are still strong. Also, in ICC, there is a responsibility on each and every boss that a hunter must do, which if you enjoy being the helpful hunter, makes it quite fun.

WotLK you are more utility and good damage (A tier) than TBC being S Single A Cleave C AoE. Cata has Hunter return to a higher rank overall while still being utility on certain fights (especially Firelands). They do a drifting every expansion going forward on how powerful they are and what tgeir role means in raid, pvp, and eventually mythic keys.

Going of racials im sure you're talking pve, to brush over dwarf racials as mehh would be a pve thing considering stoneform is BiS for pvp especially before rogues blind was a physical attack rather than physical, devouring plauge, rend.. these were huge debuffs in vanilla that can be simply countered. Especially when a ud spriest spends 1/4 of mana on dp and you stoneform it and a rogue things they getting off a full blind only to get stone formed....
