This fantastic song is a tribute to Andrew Wood, the frontman from one of the original grunge bands, Mother Love Bone, who tragically died of a heroin overdose. Two of the remaining members of that band, Stone Gossard (guitar) and Jeff Ament (bass), went on to form Pearl Jam. Gossard in particular had seriously contemplated abandoning music altogether due to the devastation of Wood's death.

Oh wow that's really interesting. One of the best gems and tracks in rock and roll grunge is a song called Alone. It is supposedly Pearl Jam with Alice in Chains. Is that true? It sounds like Pearl Jam with Layne Staley. =) No matter what the song is AMAZING. Another gem and very unknown track is Picture This - Down. That song was a demo and from the late 90s. They sounded a lot like Alice in Chains and a bit of Queen mixed. The singer who I spoke to said it got leaked and they only had 1 or two albums and then he did other bands. Note their is two bands called picture this. The only track to look up is Picture This Down demo. Check them two tracks out everyone. They are both on KZbin. =) You will Love them if you love Alice in Chains and grunge. ❤

This song was written by guitarist (and co-singer) Jerry Cantrell as a tribute to his friend Andrew Wood, the singer of Malfunkshun and Mother Love Bone, who died of a heroin overdose in 1990. He didn't even live to see Mother Love Bone's first album come out. A couple of the remaining members (Jeff Ament and Stone Gossard) were recruited by Chris Cornell (of Soundgarden) along with Mike McCready and Matt Cameron to form Temple of the Dog, as a tribute to Wood. Cornell got Eddie Vedder to provide some extra vocals on the album. After that Vedder and the others (Ament, Gossard and McCready) formed Pearl Jam (with various drummers ).

As someone that was playing in bands in this era, ( here's my own band from '93: watch?v=9hsN8iZ1Atg (though that's not my channel)), all of the bands coming up in the post-punk/sludge metal/grunge/math rock scene of that time shared many diverse influences that were boiled down into a similar sound shared among bands. Also, there were a ton of highly influential bands in local scenes all around the country that never became household names like the bands they influenced. On the West Coast, the main band that influenced everyone was The Melvins. That introduction of a new musical motif to close out the song thing is a straight-up Melvins rip. On the East Coast, Helmet was an early progenitor of the new style. In the middle of the country, the label Amphetamine Reptile Records was carrying the torch. Earlier than that, you had the 'crossover' bands that mixed metal and punk, like Corrosion of Conformity, Black Flag was mixing hardcore with doom metal and jazz, and their label, SST, was putting out Sabbath-influenced metal bands like St. Vitus. By the time the 90s hit, the local scenes became super diverse, musically. It was an exciting time to be in bands.

So Layne and Jerry were one of the all-time great vocal duos. No question. BUT! All the stories I've heard about Layne describe how hard he worked on his vocals, and how he'd spend tons of time with his four track mastering his tone and pitch so he could double-track effectively. You hear how lush his voice sounds towards the back half of this song, and lemme just say that work paid off.

World Without Tears is a great album also. "Real Live Bleeding Fingers and Broken Guitar Strings" is a great rocker. "Righteously" is sexy as hell. Doug Pettibone is one GREAT guitarist.

Please do “Them Bones” for MSM asap! It’s an epic album-opener! AIC is worthy of a deep dive. Layne Staley and guitarist Jerry Cantrell harmonized so beautifully. You should hear some of Cantrell’s solo music, too. From his “Boggy Depot” album check out “Dickeye,” “Cut You In,” and “Your Song.”

You could easily do a poll for each grunge band, they had so many great songs each - pearl jam, Soundgarden, Alice in chains, smashing pumpkins, stone temple pilots, etc...

Such a great tune. Took me months to learn those low notes so I could sing along. I'd recommend "Bleed the Freak" and "Man in the Box," both from their 1990 debut album, Facelift. Nice surprise to see that pop up on YT today. Enjoyed your Rea ction.

This is probably my favorite AIC song. Brings me back to the early 90's and being a teenager in my flannels and rock shirts. lol

This album is a banger from start to end you can just point at a random track and it's great. Smashing Pumpkin's Siamese Dream is a similarly high quality album and you should definitely hit something off it or the songs Siva or I am one off Gish. Stone Temple Pilots have alot of bangers. You have the big radio hits like Interstate Love Song and Plush or Wicked Garden just to name a couple off the top of my head.

I have to be honest you talk of Tool, and sure they have earned respect, but I personally don't think that Tool could carry Alice in chains equipment to the venue. Alice is by far a level above. 👑🛡️

I always figured ya’ll were old enough to be already familiar with 90’s Alt. There’s a world of grunge waiting for you. There’s plenty of deep track Nirvana, Soundgarden and Alice awaiting you! 🔥 Must hear Rotten Apple off of AIC Jar of Flies.

Don't forget Mad Season. They can have some more of Layne that way when they run out of Alice in Chains songs. Mad Season ......Live at the Moore is on youtube

Imagine a stage lined with an entire stack of Marshall amps and this turned up to 11. One of my favorite 90s bands. they are MTV unplugged session is one of the best ever. On a sidenote, Joe Satriani 'Summer Song' needs a review! 😎🍸 cheers

I Stay Away is another absolute classic. Layne Staley was a powerful vocalist and is sorely missed. There's some live stuff on YT, where you can fully appreciate Layne's voice and the cohesiveness of AIC as a band.

Thank you for exposing me to this song. (If I heard it on car radio, I might have changed channels early in.) I never heard anything by AIC before, didn't even know they were grunge. I was impressed by how atmospheric and emotional the song is, the different textures of guitar and vocals, how well-worked-out the band's sound is (drums a little monotonous though) and the ending is great. I'm not a fan of grunge, but admire some of it, and definitely admire this.

This song was on a huge soundtrack, The 1992 film called "Singles". May be one for Patreon?? All I know about it is it is an all star cast and it is based in Seattle during the Grunge era. I think I will go watch it now. Oh, AIC and Eddie Vedder from Pearl Jam are in it too.

Andy, you’re totally right about playing this in the car. I BLAST this song when it reaches the end. Alice in Chains have so many bangers, and some really dark, haunting material. “Man in the Box”, “Down in a Hole”, “Bleed the Freak”, “Love Hate Love”, “I Stay Away”, “Nutshell” and “Rain When I Die” among many others!
@josephbrenner2278 Жыл бұрын
Other way around. Tool was influenced by Alice In Chains.
