They did in the past and over time if they get experienced candidates running and put forth a platform that actually is for the regular people it is possible Sinn Fein could win. People in the South decry what happened in the North. But, nobody wants to admit that after the British forced the partition on those fighting for independence, and let's be honest that is what happened because the British were the ones who put forth the idea of partition and made the threats that saw it accepted, those in the South gave a sigh of relief and were happy with their newfound independence and over time abandoned the Nationalist community in the North who had fought alongside them during the war of independence. It is easy under the circumstances of such ease in the South to look down your noses at those in the Nationalist community in the North and Sinn Fein in particular. Forgetting how messed up the political process was there. Businesses and others with special interests were given five even seven votes compared to the one vote per person that constitutes a real democracy and Derry for example was gerrymandered so the minority got most of the council seats and the majority Nationalist community had no say.

Sinn Fein did something that sometimes works - they waited. They waited patiently for two new generations to come of age who have no memory of the troubles. And now Sinn Fein has become what it was before the troubles: a progressive party with a solid platform. People forget that Sinn Fein was founded before the IRA and it is now hitting its stride 28 years after the final IRA bombings. So if the young people of Ireland can have no memory of Sinn Fein's violent middle period, then so can we. They are the only party that has the policy platform that the majority of people want. They are going to win big in Northern Ireland on May 5. And then, they are going to lead the unification of Ireland. Troubles? What troubles? The new Ireland is here.

The turning point was when Martin McGuinness died and when Gerry Adams stood down as leader, as much as I personally liked McGuinness & Adams as politicians I can say with full confidence that they were never going to make Sinn Fein the largest party in Ireland because of their shady past as IRA members (allegedly). Mary Lou & Michelle brought a new image to the party that didn’t invoke the IRA and tied into that progressive image especially when you compare them to FF & FG.

They introduced several taxes targeting the working class and poor and cut child benefit and mental health funding and several other huge issues the Irish people have with them. They lied and delivered on nothing they promised and have turned into Fine Gael and conservative. Water charges to. Its a dead party with no future anyway.
