যখন একটা বাক্যে দুইটা অতীত কালের ঘটনা বর্ণনা করা হয়, তখন ওই দুইটার মধ্যে যেটা আগে সংঘটিত হয়েছে সেটা পাস্ট পারফেক্ট টেন্সে করতে হয়। এই কারণে if I knew না হয়ে If I had known হয়েছে। কারণ জানার কাজটা আগে, ছাতা নেওয়ার কাজটা পরে সংঘটিত হয়েছে।
