I knew I would struggle with this portion of the deck build by myself, but I knew it would be possible to accomplish, therefore I wanted to go ahead and get it done. It wasn't a simple straightforward thing as I was dealing with crooked and un-square 'things' (as I don't know what else to call them). I pretty much knew I would only be able to do my best and make it look as visually appealing as possible, and after some tweaking, I think I managed to make it look pretty decent.
Some videos I cut out a lot of my thought process, and some videos I keep more of it in, and that is the case for this video. I didn't want to make it look like I just put it together no problem, or if it came out horribly, I had no way of explaining why. haha. I think it's so important to find ways around the obstacles and challenges that come up, and there were quite a few for me this time around and I wanted to share how I made my decisions in those instances. In the end, I have a deck that looks 'relatively proper', for lack of a better term. 😉 I am really happy with how it turned out in the end even though the whole front deck boards are basically hiding the entire structures imperfections. (they start out at one end in line with the front deck rim joist, and by the time I was done, there's about a 2" overhang 🤷🏻‍♀️).
I'm one step closer, and now I have a pretty safe work site for the remainder of the build. AND I have more square footage of flat, comfortable walking surfaces!!! yayyyy!! 😬
I think the next thing to tackle is the insulation, strapping, windows side of things.
Maybe here, maybe there, or maybe everywhere! One way or another I will see you again soon in the next video! 😊
M 💕

For all your struggles, I know a lot of guys wouldn't put in as much thought and effort that you are to build a little cabin. A cabin doesn't need to be perfectly square and straight, just soundly built to stand up to the elements. No house ever built is perfectly square. Well done.

Your thought process is spot on with your deck addition. I framed houses and commercial buildings for about twenty years and when working with a out of square structure the best you can do is make it look good as long as it is structurally safe and to building code.

I've had to work projects like this by myself at 71 years old. I appreciate the struggles I see you going through as I've been through this rebuilding my termite ridden garage, hosting up 2x8 by 8 ft. long lumber over and over again to replace joist. My hats off to you watching all of the gymnastics that you have to go through juggling lumber to make it stay in place at correct angles.... very impressive. When you work by yourself you have to get very creative and it shows while your working... stay safe and good luck on your project.

Next time you want to square up a large area try using the 3-4-5 triangle method. (3ft by 4ft by 5ft) Description The 3-4-5 triangle rule states when the ratio 3:4:5 is present as the side lengths of a triangle, the triangle is a right triangle. The 3-4-5 triangle satisfies the Pythagorean Theorem which states that the sum of the squares of the two smaller sides in a right triangle equals the square of the longest side. Keep up the great work! 😊

Excellent video Michy! You should be very proud how that deck turned out. Sure, it might not be 'perfect' but you figured out a good work around and made it look great. I can't imagine the increased amount of difficulty considering what you have available for tools, working by yourself, on the side of cliff, being sore, moving the camera for different shots. Amazing video also, great mix of your thought process, the little squirrels, Lenny, the crows. One of your best videos 😉

I'm sure you already know it, but as a reminder, to make a corner square, mark a point 3 ft away from the corner on one side, and 4 ft from the corner on the other side. Then measure between those 2 points, and if it's square, it should be exactly 5 ft. Hope this helps. 😊 ❤

Just an idea~~~ Several years ago I had a client whose deck was on a stilt house overlooking the Loxahatchee River, he wanted a rail and picket system that gave him the best view of the river through it. What I came up with was a heavy-duty 2" mesh nylon net that I fixed to the rails with 1/8" bronze brazing rods woven through the net, pulled tight, and attached with 1 1/8" x 1/4" SS staples. It was a little tricky to weave and pull to get a good tension but after the first panel, it became easier. It was a saltwater environment so I had to use non-ferrous metals. It was so successful that a year later the neighbor employed me to do the same system on his decks. In hindsight, I could have purchased the net "tarred" but I had visions of an oily mess, now I am thinking it may have been a better choice as was not oily and it would be even more transparent and the tar-like coating would have prevented water, and sunlight from getting into the fibers.
