For who this camera is aimed at, I don't think the lack of viewfinder will be an issue. This is meant to be a relatively inexpensive pocketable vacation style camera, one probably aimed at young people, one you whip out to snap a quick pic or video of something then move on. Probably people coming from a phone might move to such a camera, and they won't miss a viewfinder at all.

But wouldn't a bigger sensor then require a lens with a correspondingly broader diameter, which then would beget a larger camera body? The Sony RX100-VII has a 1" sensor, but its lens only has a 200mm focal length. I think there's a limit to how much glass you can fit in a pocket.

I have a TZ95D. I use the viewfinder about 50% of the time. It was a good selling point so it’s shame it’s not in the new model. I’ve sometimes wished it had a 1” sensor, but 1” compacts were a lot more expensive at the time I bought it.

I'm glad Lumix is keeping point and shoots alive, assuming this thing will be manufactured in any significant quantity. I think I would have preferred to see them innovate over the last model a bit. If they could make a 1" sensor 20MP camera with a 25-300mm zoom range to out compete the RX100 a bit that would be awesome. Then have an internal 2x crop mode that can shoot 1/2" 5MP pictures and 1080p video at 50-600mm for the superzoom fanatics that would cover a lot of ground and be fairly on par with what this ZS99 can do right now as far as zoom range. I think for the point and shoot market they need to at least have the same size sensor as the latest iPhone. It doesnt make much sense to try and sell a camera to someone that has a smaller sensor than what is already in their pocket. Offering similar image quality at the normal zoom ranges that the phones already offer (ie ~25-100mm) is the bare minimum. Then adding features on top of that like a tactile experience, manual shooting modes, and longer zoom ranges beyond the tiny phone primes is what would actually sell these IMO.

Just a heads up on the anything from Lumix ZS-line. years ago I owned a Panasonic Lumix ZS50, they were clearing this camera out and add a one-year additional warranty as a sweetener. The camera failed after 22 months. Panasonic does not have a company owned repair station in the US but a contract company. They refused to repair my camera because they claimed that I abused the poor thing; I didn't about it, but I did use it a lot. So a word to the wise.

@@vgee3926 that's the problem with the super zoom lens, less zoom would be better it would pull in less air when zooming out. To prevent dust from going inside the camera keep the lens barrel clean.

Yeah, that's my thought too. It would be great to have a new dedicated point and shoot camera, were the jpgs needs no editing (well, not by the user, at least), even when it comes to things like recovering shadows and highlights. Also, with better optics than a smartphone, it would need far less digital sharpening and shuch, giving a better/more natural looking photo.

Hey there. I was in NYC just the other week for work shooting video. I had a day to get out to the city and do some street photography for the first time ever. I was shooting a GH5 MK II with an OM F4 Pro 8-25 and had a great time. All my work to this point has needed long-range telephoto, so the contrast to need wide angle was quite interesting. I had to admit that it would have been pretty cool to have seen you out at the park when I was there. Anyway, this camera seems to be an answer to cell phone cameras, or at least an attempt at that? If a company would take the computational benefits of a phone and put it with decent optical hardware in this form factor, now wouldn't that be something.... Cheers Rick

I have an older compact panasonic with the intelgent zoom. I really liked it. Many years ago I shot pictures of the moon which was before smart phone cameras could get good. It might have been 12x optical at the time. This 30x looks amazing. Too bad the image sensor is webcam quality. And no view finder is a shame.😢

I applaud Panasonic is releasing the TZ99. However, the lack of EVF is a no go for me. I will stick with my TZ90. Seems the TZ99 will be able to record vertical video and I can understand the reason the EVF is dropped because I believe the camera is aimed a smartphone users that want more real optical zoom. Btw, I also own a G100 that shoots vertical video. It is fun having that option although I use the G100 mainly as a stills camera, just like my TZ90.

This camera seems to have so many strikes against it. That 4K crop pretty much rules this out as a vlogging camera. No EVF takes another demographic out. Poor low light. Who exactly is this camera meant for? People on a budget looking for crazy zooms? I think most of them would be better off just using the phone they currently own.

One thing to be clear is that most camera companies, I think, have never really understood who uses compact cameras anyway. For a long time they just sort of slap features on them and see what happens. It seems like Panasonic still doesn't really understand who is buying these. Only that there is some demand, so they basically started the production line again to make some old cameras with a tiny few updates. They didn't understand why people bought them then and they don't understand why people buy them now.

I would say the image is comparable to a modern phone but the zoom is where the difference is. Most smart phone zooms use some kind of digital manipulation ...this camera has a true optical zoom and its pretty impressive

Yeah I just got a Pixel 9 Pro and I'm often torn between shooting on my 1/2.3 compact vs my new phone. I like the tactile experience of using a camera and I still choose it often despite the lower IQ. But I dont think I would go out and buy a new camera that couldn't at least take a similar quality 1x shot at 24mm compared to my phone.

I have the ZS70 which uses the same lens but comes with an EVF. The feature set is similar to the ZS99. It has taken some 'impossible' shots for me because of its super tele. The movie function is not important because my phone can do a better job. If you want to travel light, ZS99/80/70 and a good smartphone camera is all that you need

Was just looking for a good zoom camera for huge stadium concerts as the popularity and usage for has sky rocketed, but only ISO 3200 feels a bit too low though? Atleast it will now be easier to get than the HX99. I hope canon updates their SX740 to atleast shoot RAW which has been the biggest drawback for that model. Looking forward to the comparisons!

ISO 3200 with a 5.6x crop factor would have the same noise profile of ISO 100352 on full frame...so on this tiny sensor 3200 is already pushing it pretty far.

@techtoremember8096 Richard Wong did a test with a pre-production model and it seemed ok, but he didn't exactly use very challenging situations. My own experience with the tz95d is that it focus quite poorly in slightly lower contrast areas. It will be great if you can verify if there's any improvement.

Yes, I believe it. Panasonic has again, for the third time, re-released very old cameras with minor updates, but omit updating the really important things like the sensor or provide what was missing in those old cameras, eg EVF, PDAF. It seems Panasonic still wants to make use of really old parts from years ago and make a few more bucks. Disappointing. It would be more interesting if Panasonic would update their 1-inch sensor mobile phone, the CM1, and actually put in a new sensor. Or update the GM5, and actually put in a new sensor. Or, update the GX 9, but don't just put in USB-C or a better EVF than that sequential trash one. Put in it the 25 MP sensor! There are so many real updates Panasonic can make.

The ZS99 has some nice upgrades, but they threw out the baby along with the bathwater by omitting the viewfinder.

Another overpriced compact with tiny sensor, there is no hope, photo industry is dead. I have my older Lumix LX100 and there is no replacement for it. Who cares about LCD resolution? I need mainly good viewer, bigger sensor and reasonable optical zoom, perfect would be like 7-10x, if it was hard to keep bigger sensor with that, than at least 5x, most of profi compacts with bigger sensor have only 3x and that's sometimes limiting you, but who needs 30x in such body? I have some 10x lens for my bigger camera and I barely use it in full scale.
