Driving in the Dominican Republic
With Punta Cana all you can see, I am driving around in the Dominican Republic on my Motorbike.
I follow the rules, but more than that I have my eyes open all the time and look everywhere.
If you want to drive In the Dominican Republic, I recommend you to the same!
When renting a car in the Dominican Republic, you want to know that other
Cars and motorbike can come from any unexpected direction, Big Trucks drive in front of you and slowly loose their cargo. Busse drive towards you on your Line and make signals so that YOU know they expect you to go out of their way… Yes, I might not have had it all, but plenty of unexpected situations.
This is something to think about when you consider to rent something in the Dominican Republic. Always give a 100% of your attention to driving and your surroundings. Information about driving laws you can find online, here just a little, as this video is more about, Real life experience!
In the Dominican Republic we drive on the right hand side of the Road.
Most common international Rules apply, like, everybody has to wear seatbelts, no mobil phones, blood alcohol level 0.10% . In the Dominican Republic you must been 18 years old to get a drivers license.
There are fines for not obeying the law.
If stoped by the police ( in Bavaro that can be stoped by the Tourist Police, by Amed ( green uniform), Policia Nacional (PN ) and as well the Military.
Always have you papers ready vehicle registration document, Insurance and your drivers license, as well as your ID (passport) a copy of the passport with your entry stamp, will do, most of the times.
Now you will find many locals not following the rules and even better making their own. :-) At the end this is also why we “first world people” like to live here. We feel more freedom. For the better and the worse. Many things have changed in the 20 years that I live here, but I still prefer living and driving here, than else where!
Have a look!

Coming from Canada, observing the chaos that is the Dominican Republic road system is enough for me to hand the wheel to someone else. It's scary enough walking on the sidewalks here avoiding random death-pits and pot holes, I do a recon once a week to spot any new hazards on the route I normally take when I do have to drive.

If you can handle driving in Haiti, navigating the roads in the Dominican Republic will be a breeze. Just be sure your horn is in good working condition.

I dunno about "it actually works" lol. DR has the highest traffic death rate in the world by a huge margin, almost double Zimbabwe which is the 2nd worst.

Great video! Do you have any rental car company that you recommend? We are going to visit Punta Cana and Samana in two weeks and after reading so many bad reviews about the rental car companies, I have no idea which company I should rent from. Thank you!
