What occurred with Valverde rarely happens during a game--teams won't leave themselves that open to a counter. In all cases, when the last defender commits such a foul, whether outside or inside the box, the attacking team should get the choice of a penalty or a red card. Valverde would still have taken the red, as a pk isn't a guaranteed goal, but the attacking team would at least have a chance to benefit.

Valverde's play, reminds of the Luis Suarez hand ball on the line versus Ghana in the 2010 World Cup. Ghana was given a penalty kick and keeper saved the penalty. Luis Suarez gave his goal keeper a chance at saving the penalty and helping his team qualify to the next round. Ghana was pissed, but it was Suarez fault they missed the penalty.
