I feel like the lying one is so obvious for two reasons. One, people won't always believe you if you say they're lying and people can still argue against it even if you do know. And two, if you think about it, based on what it says, logically you could just rob a bank or something and say "wasn't me" and they can't catch you.

Not exactly, he ran a company that hired other engineers, scientists, etc., they would come up with patented devices or methods of use and then make money off of them. Edison got most of the publicity just like Steve Jobs or Bill Gates because he was the founder and public face of the company. Tesla quite literally worked for Edison. Tesla left at one point, Edison pushed for direct current to be what powered most of America, Tesla pushed for alternating current, a.c. was easier to implement and won out (a.c. still gets converted to d.c. in a lot of electronic devices). There were too many people that could make a shitload of money for electricity to ever be free, plus if it was free who was going to pay for all of the infrastructure to implement the delivery of it to homes, businesses, etc., as well as the upkeep? If there weren't public power companies it'd be the govt. and you'd be taxed on it, still costs you money either way. It's the same thing as water, which ideally should be free, but it costs a lot of money for the infrastructure to deliver it everywhere
