I lived in Mongolia for many years, since at the time I was training to become a professional sumo wrestler and my mentor, who was from the rural regions, invited me to stay and train in the country with its many talented bokh practitioners (Mongolian traditional stand up wrestling) and its always so comforting to see Mongolian culture and especially food show up here and then wherever I go. Airag was something that I drank as much as water and shiguderi (milk vodka). Also little tip for anyone who wants to try Mongolian cuisine, give khuushuur (dumplings deep fried in lard), khorkhog (a type of traditional Mongolian hot stone barbecue) and tsuivan (Mongolian stir fried noodles, usually with mutton or horse) a try, as well as buuz (steamed dumplings often filled with meat). They're probably the most famous dishes from the country.

I have tried this drink, airag, in Mongolia because I was in the Peace Corps there in 2010. I found it to be very hard to stomach, except for one time when it was prepared for Western tourists and it tasted like plain yogurt mixed with club soda. I actually prefer the distilled version which tends to remove the chunks; even though I don't like the higher alcohol content, it tends to go down more easily.

My partner is a Swiss, and he introduced me to cheese fondue. Unlike American Style cheese fondue, this has a very unique and interesting aroma. It did some getting used to and believe me, my first attempt was less than dismal. However, after giving it second, third and fourth try over several months, I am now so hooked onto it, that I prefer cheese fondue over meat fondue. You just gotta give these types of food more than one try.

As a Mongolian, I must admit old Airag is literally a shit, it will make your stomach ache and tastes like well, shit.
