There will always be haters and people too afraid of what others might think to really enjoy life. Nobody is saying, “hey, we should go back to wearing those clothes everyday!” It’s just a very cool way to acknowledge and appreciate where you came from. Just like a big old tree has deep roots that keep it anchored to the ground and feed it as it grows today, so too a society or culture with deep roots helps you stay grounded while sustaining you as you continue to move forward. The Chinese people are blessed to have such a rich past. It should be embraced and celebrated. I think it’s safe to say that people all over the world don’t care as much as they once did about their appearance when they leave home. In the US, my father would wear a suit and tie if he and my mother went out to dinner or a movie. Today, people look like they just got out of bed and walked straight out the door. Sure, you can always throw on jeans and a t-shirt. But OMG have you seen what Hanfu style has to offer? There are endless variations in the colors and the cut of each piece. As you see in many of the videos you can see how the clothing ties very closely to nature, the seasons and the elements. It also is perfectly suited to your choice of martial arts. The wide deep sleeves can be used to conceal swords, knives, sticks, staffs and fans as well as empty hand strikes and circular blocks. The wide pants allow great range of motion for high kicks and deep stances. The hair styles for women and the hair jewelry that go with it are stunning. Virtually every woman looks beautiful in these beautiful clothes. Sorry, I have gone on too long. Believe me, I am no fashionista. I am a martial arts and firearms instructor in a rough part of Chicago. Hanfu is a precious gift from your past. It is uniquely Chinese. That makes it yours. How much of what you wear today can you say that about? Compare the level of style and craftsmanship of Hanfu vs the clothing the volunteers came in with. Weddings, New Years, first Friday of the month, full moon. Any day is a good day to get your Hanfu on! Peace ✌️

1.Shanghai, a newly prosperous city that has emerged in nearly a century, is actually not a place where Hanfu culture is popular. You should go to Xi'an, Hangzhou, Beijing, and Luoyang, which have a long history and have served as the capital of China in the past. In those places, Hanfu can be seen everywhere. 2. The lady boss of the clothing store also said that Hanfu should actually be called "traditional Chinese clothing". Because China has 56 ethnic groups with very diverse cultures (X-axis), and also has a history of thousands of years through dozens of dynasties (Y-axis), from these two perspectives, the area formed by this coordinate axis should be very large, which means there will be a very large variety of dazzling traditional clothing.

Chinese people were actually forced to give up wearing the Hanfu (汉服) when China was conquered by the ethnic Manchus (满族) who were a non-Chinese ethnic group originating in Manchuria, which is today split into the northeastern provinces of China and various krais and oblasts of the Russian Far East. The Manchus overthrew the Chinese Ming Dynasty in 1644 AD; and they began forcing the Chinese people to adopt Manchu styles of clothing and Manchu hairstyles. While Chinese males traditionally did not cut their hair and instead donned their hair into a topknot style, the Manchus forced all ethnic Han Chinese males to shave all the hair off the top front of their head and plait their hair into these ugly queues instead that have come to characterise Chinese people in the west. Women were forced to don on these huge Manchu headpieces with a flower in the middle known as the "banner head" (旗头) and they were forced to wear the Manchu qipao (旗袍); as Manchus were commonly known as people of the banner (旗人). There was a saying at the time for the men, "留发不留头" (leave your hair on and you will be beheaded). This mass cultural purge of traditional Chinese clothing was known as "剃发易服令", and millions of Chinese people were killed for not adhering to traditional Manchu clothing. This lasted until the Chinese overthrew the Manchu Qing Dynasty in 1911 AD, establishing the Republic of China (中华民国). This cultural purge of Chinese traditional clothing which has lasted more than 300 years has had an immense impact on Chinese society, and many Chinese people today do still have the misconception that Manchu traditional clothing = Chinese traditional clothing when it is not. The traditional Chinese hanfu has a lengthy history of nearly 4000 years dating back to the Shang Dynasty which began in 1700 BC, and it has historically had a great influence on both the Korean hanbok and Japanese kimono.

Actually when the Manchus overthrew the Ming Dynasty men were indeed forced to conform to the Manchu clothing customs, however women were not. Han women continued to wear the pre Qing costume until the Revolution. There are many paintings and photos of Han women wearing the the tunic and pleated skirt ensemble and Han women never adopted the winged headress of the Manchu, but continued to wear their hair in the traditional way. Chinese ancestral paintings never show Han women in Manchu dress even if their husbands are high court officials.

Hanfu has influenced the traditional clothing of many neighbouring cultures, including the Korean hanbok,[7][8] the Japanese kimono (wafuku),[9][10] the Okinawan ryusou,[11][12] and the Vietnamese áo giao lĩnh (Việt Phục).[13][14] Up to a certain extent, hanfu has also influenced some elements in Western fashion, especially those influenced by Chinoiserie fashion, due to the popularity of Chinoiserie since the 17th century in Europe and in the United States.[15]: 52 [note 1] Silk remains a core element of Hanfu and Chinese traditional clothing.

It’s because during the period in which Mongolia occupied China, the Manchu made it mandatory for all government officials to wear clothing that was similar to the modern qipao/changshan, and because of this, the Hanfu, which was originally the style worn at the time, was pushed away and forgotten. As Han chinese I definitely support Hanfu movement in order to preserve this part of our culture, but not in order to discard other part of our culture, like Qipao as something of "invaders", even historically they were imposed by forces. Not because something that was not originally Han that we should not consider it as part of our culture. Maybe others would hold different views. But since Hanfu is less known then Qipao,Hanfu should recieve more promotion and attention.

as someone who belongs in gen z, i’m really proud and happy that this movement is a thing. i feel like overtime, the depth and beauty of a culture fades with younger generations, but having this movement shows the conscious awareness to revive and acknowledge our humble beginnings. although the history behind traditional chinese clothing is super complicated and that the 90s hanfus and ancient china hanfus are different, i feel like this movement is a kind reminder of how beautiful the chinese culture is. i hope this movement takes off to the point where the majority will feel comfortable with wearing hanfu for special events/holidays, especially with those of chinese descent who live in america like me. a lot of people in the younger generations find themselves in an identity crisis because they don’t feel chinese enough as ABCs. But having this movement might be a great way to promote pride in their culture and develop a passionate interest in reconnecting with their roots.

Some explanation needs to be laid here: our traditional clothes has disappeared for almost 400 years due to the establishment of qing dynasty, some massacre happened to prevent Han people from wearing their traditional clothes. Revival only officially started in 2003, we revived it based on clothing from museums and confuscius temples, drawing and written records from before qing times . so it still has a long way to go. Don't be surprised when Chinese people don't wear or don't know about this.

Hanfu is beautiful! I wish more people wore traditional clothing in all countries. Traditional clothing is so vibrant and different and interesting. Just imagine how wonderfully eclectic we would be and how much we would learn about each other. And if your traditional clothing truly is impractical or uncomfortable, small changes could fix that without leaving it behind. Or it could always be for times when practicality isn't the biggest concern. Though I imagine that most traditional wear is more comfortable and practical than we give it credit for, if it wasn't it wouldn't have been worn every day for hundreds or thousands of years.

Traditional clothing has altogether a different vibe when worn. Though, not everyone here is willing to wear them, it brought a smile on my face, how others couldn't resist themselves, looking back at the one's dressed up in traditional attire. I think that's the charm. 💕😊 Here in India, every region and state have different form of attire. During festivals when people take time to wear the dresses, it's so hard not to look at them and appreciate the beautiful things about the culture and history. Specially women, they look so pretty! 😍🙌

You will often see females wear Sari (in India), Sompot (in Cambodia), Sinh (in Laos and Thailand), and Longyi (in Myanmar), along with our famous shoulder-wrap garment cloth that was influenced from India. Formal men clothing can wear Nehru jacket with Mandarin collar. The Sino-sphere (China, Japan, Korea, Vietnam) don’t wear traditional clothing often. I see them wear western clothing all the time.

Koreans also adopted Chinese characters before. Later, however, the Korean government abolished Chinese characters completely for some purpose ( reasons everyone understands), which led to many problems in Korean expression. Today, many Koreans suggest restoring Chinese characters.

Funny thing is Korea and Japan retain han culture better than modern China does. China went through 3 periods (though mainly 2) that pretty much destroyed Han culture in modern China. 1. Yuan dynasty (Mongol Rule1279-1368) Although less significant as the mongol emperors tended to be more tolerant to other cultures and han culture was revived (though signicantly changed) under the Ming dynasty. 2. Qing dynasty (Manchu Rule 1644 to 1912) As you can see, the Ming dynasty was sandwiched between two successive "conquest" dynasties 3. Cultural revolution (1966-1976) After the overthrowing of the QIng dynasty, many favoured the restoring of many han chinese customs, i.e Clothing and hairstyle, but unfortunately this period coincided with globalisation and westernisation, and political chaos (warlord era, ww2 and then chinese civil war)

I also wanted ours to be seen more in public, to wear it proudly and keeping our culture alive. Now I'm saving up to at least to buy one and to showcase the beauty of it. I'm also obsessed with the elegance and beauty of Hanfu, I've been a fan of it for years, seeing it on drama and all that.

Im half filipino and currently staying in the Philippines! I own a couple of 'Maria Claras' and I've been planning on wearing them outside! Not sure about reactions because unlike the hanfu...traditional clothing isnt really a 'normal' thing to see outside... but I'd still love to tryy! Actually, Plano naming magbabarkada gumala na naka Maria Clara... exciting rin...

As a Filipino, I believe there is a more traditional clothing compared to the Barong Tagalog, but it could be rare and less acceptable to the public eye.

Good job! We people should really start wearing our traditional cloths more often. It's such a waste to not wear our long traditional and beautiful history! Lots of love from India❤

Chinese people should be proud of their history. Even the Kimono was based on Hanfu. Looks amazing!

Lot's of love from India. Tbh no hate to han-fu 😅 but i somehow find Cheongsam outfits more attractive than Han-fu. Hanfu is good too(both male and female) but if I were to choose one then I'd choose Cheongsam, cause the male cheongsam outfit looks cool and in many Kung-fu movies it's been featured. And female outfits are also very much beautiful.

I think only Indian women wear traditional clothing since eternity. It hasn't gone out of fashion. Saree.

Indian women wear traditionally as they always do, but hanfu-wearing is still in regeneration after its cutting out.

Hanfu is the true traditional clothing of Han Chinese. Han Chinese should be proud of their Hanfu that has been worn by Han Chinese for Thousands of years before Manchus came in and changed the clothing.

I live in Shanghai and I like Hanfu. I saw a lot of people were wearing Hanfu on Dragon Boat Festival this year. I felt so happy to see that. These are the traditional clothes of the Han people! Not the Qipao(though qipao is also very pretty).

Hanbok is influenced by Mongolian and Indian and Scythian 3000years ago not from China Hanfu is from Korea wen Korea ruled China before Ming dynasty we influenced in China 1500years ago Koreans are from Mongolian our culture and Dna is very different with China. Just that’s science and truth. China kills and buried and burned ur owned culture Protect ur original culture Koreans and all world liked ur origin Not copy from others Chinese hasn’t wore hanfu even 10years agoMing Dynasty has influenced by Korea when we conquered China Hanfu prove our history letter “Hanfu”is created just 20years ago suddenly China hasn’t wore Hanfu even 10years ago don’t lie plz Koreans thank to Mongolian and Indian and Japan and Egyptians who gave our culture Not from China We are children of Mu dynasty and we are Altaic tibes we are not Chinese China needs to protect your owned culture first rather than taking from other countries You guys burnt and destroy ur owned culture by yourself why steal from others? Hanfu has existed in Ming Dynasty But Text of Hanfu has been created just 20years ago You guys haven’t wore thousands years and even 10years ago. You suddenly started wear hanfu just in 10years You guys insist Hanfu is origin. Korea has been Manchuria before ming dynasty Hanbok has been for a long time in Korea Youguys insist Ours r from Korea We don’t say Kimono is from Korea even though we have wore Kimono for along time No one says kimono is Korean cloth China is greedy China needs to protect your owned culture first rather than taking from other countries You guys burnt and destroy ur owned culture by yourself why steal from others? China will be broken Chinese will admit their greedy fault and Tibet Uyghur Hongkong and Taiwan will be happy and free China will be heaven when they will be broken completely.

I think there are political and cultural reasons, China isn’t like Korea or Japan. China has 56 nationalities, and it’s hard to keep a homogeneous tradition after all the dynasties. That’s why it would be dangerous and biased if Han costumes are officially promoted. But it’s important to keep the tradition while being respectful.
