Very thoughtful. There's a lot of talk about the poor reception of returning veterans but the Army didn't want us either. I got out early in '69 on a program that would discharge returnees from Vietnam and Korea if their return date was within 5 months of their discharge date. It was presented as some sort of reward but the truth was the Army didn't want us either: we were proving too much of a discipline problem. Better to just send us home and let Barney Fife deal with us. I was lucky that things got bad enough fast enough that I got help early and was in pretty good shape by the late 70s. Yet, the flag-waving press coverage of the 2d Gulf War and Afghanistan upset me enough that, at 75, I wrote a book about the gap between my service and the press coverage the events I lived through. Nobody read it beyond friends and family, but I felt better.

Wow these people are incredible. i am sitting here in the UK at 3 in the morning as i cant sleep amid the madness of the world wide shut down. My father was captured by the japanese and spent 3 years on the burma siam death railway . he was like a corpse when the war ended. he never talked about his experience and was sick until the day he died. it was never talked about and our relationship was distant and by the time he died we were estranged and i had and have my own battles and demons to fight . I love my father and both our lives would have been different if he had had his PTSD dealt with and acknowledged. My mother who was Austrian had her house bombed by the US air force and was raped a number of times by the russian forces who "liberated" her city in Austria. She too never talked about her experiences . It is like both my parents just wanted to get on with life but all this stuff was supressed like a pressure cooker. Perhaps they were trying to sheild both my sister and i but i just dont think it was a healthy way to deal with it. my parents found some peace in gardening too.i am 66 years old now and my wife and i have just bought our first house with a small garden and i will try and find peace in it ,a peace that i never found in the world and addictions

@Brian Shotts Thanks Brian . It is difficult to put ourselves in our parents shoes sometimes but I just wish that the timing had been better and we had had the chance to talk through issues. By the time i was mature enough to deal with my own issues it was too late both my parents were dead. Talk talk talk has got to be best way for anyone going through similar .

Two of my bosses served in Vietnam, (Australian Army) both saw significant action both were only 19, one was wounded seriously but made a full recovery, they both said you did not know where or who the enemy was. The boss who was wounded said the first enemy soldier he saw was very young and high on dope, he was almost killed by an air strike that was too close.

This was pretty good. I'm also a Vietnam vet. I was in Vietnam as a Seabee from 1967 to 1969. I understand how these feel. To I'm 75 years and dying from Agent Orange. I have PTSD I have cancer called soft tissue sarcoma. I lost my right arm up to my shoulder from cancer. I have haver prostate cancer. I have Esophagus cancer. I stomach cancer. I just got out of the hospital two days ago with Pneumonia. Six months ago the doctor me that I have 6 months to a year to live. It is what it is my friend.
