My Malinois is relentless in her connection and devotion to me. I noticed that I got annoyed with her for wanting to be close to me when I had a panic attack, and then realized it was because I was conditioned to resist asking for help. I needed the connection like everybody else, but my first reaction was always trying to suck it up, be independent, and soldier on. When I learned that my reaction was not normal, it was so much easier to allow, and even need to have someone there when it was my dog. I could trust her, and she never ever judged or abandoned me, no matter how severely I was reacting to a trigger. She never turned away unless I made her. I realized that the dog is like me in that way, and it was ok for me to want someone (and yes, my dog is a someone) to give me the same devotion I was willing to give. I swear she is some kind of angel. And she pretty much gets the best of everything I could give. The dog knows when I say, "Whole Foods" because I buy her the expensive buffet meats she likes. She deserves it more than most people.

I got through this every day looking at my cat, he is not a war Hero but he is My Hero and I could cry a thousand times if I would not stop myself and instead focus on the present moment of being with him and of our time together so I won't forget. I'm engraving our moments together in my mind 😌 Death leaves a heartache no one can heal. Love leaves memories no one can steal.

Wonderful story. I adopted a German Shepherd called Xenia. She was a war veteran, serving in Iran and Afghanistan. Afghanistan was where she lost her human partner, they found him after the battle, her head on the chest of her dead friend. The vet removed 17 pieces of shattnel and stitched her up. They tried to place her with another soldier, however, after several attempts, it was determined she had PTSD. And was medically discharged. Having friends, and working as a Doctor of Clinical psychology with the troops suffering with PTSD, plus other disorders brought on by the experiences of war, I came to hear about Xena. We met, immediately she sat at my side and where i went, Xena went! U We were together 20 months. She played like the huge puppy she was. In shops, if I wasn't watching her she would removed the cans from the shelfs for my inspection. Lol. She was a sniffer and a Bomb dog.. Life changes, after the Death of my Partners daughter, we sold the house, bought an RV and took off. Xena this wonderful friend was board, and fed up, she wanted to work. I contacted a Police friend of mine, who trained Police Drug dogs, I asked him to assess Xena. She was over her PTSD, she was coping and was ready to work. Passing her skill assessments, she now works as a sniffer dog, and loves it. I miss her, but, I wouldn't change my mind. These dogs are amazing, and should never be underestimated, they are intelligent and able to think independently, their intelligence should never be ignored. They are true hero's.
