Could the silver stuff be "Engine Restore?" Just looks like a ton of it that's why I ask. Liked the video!

@@FlyBoyMike1000 i never used that stuff. It could be anything. Timing cover houses the oil pump and the pumps tends to score the cover and bottom plate badly. It could be that. Or bearings. Or lifters or can shaft. It was a lot yes

I'd buy a bunch of cheap filters and a few gallons of kerosene or maybe diesel. Drive a little, let soak drain. That may be the best way to dissolve any build up on pick up screen. Dipstick camera is a great sounding tool, I'm surprised I didnt know of these.

Change valve pans gaskets. Engine flush might plug it up. Clean out top of heads.

@@roylong9889 check out my updated clip. I just drained the oil again after 10 miles... FILTHY again... i took the valve covers off.. its actually not that dirty on top with the valve aprings and rockers. BUT WOW is the oil dirty again... So im in the process of taking the pan off now. The pan must be absolutetly filthy.

My guess is the same as yours - Previous owner neglected to change his oil regularly. What you are seeing is pretty bad sludge and those drainplugs typically have a magnetic base which would explain the metal shavings stuck to it. My Dad was a Auto mechanic for 20 years and he always told me to change my oil regularly. I change my oil in my cars every 2,000.0 miles with filter and my 1987 Ford Crown Victoria wagon has just shy of 250,000.0 miles and does not use or lose any oil between changes. About 10 years ago I had to have the oil pan replaced due to a hole rusting through and after the mechanic pulled the pan four other mechanics joined him in admiring how clean the inside of that 302 V8 was.

@@phillipbouchard4197 ya i changed it when i got it befire i even got the engine running.. but wow 1500 miles.. it turned blsck and into this.. it must have been extremely sludgey and the clean oil cleaned it up. But im sure its still sludgy.. the metal shavings sucks though. That was a lot of silver. But it also could be the timing cover/oil pump that wears out badly on these. I decided to just refill it and oil pressure was 45psi cold. I looked back at ny original video if me getting it running and it was 45psi cold. Once it got hot after i drove it for like 8 miles at 60mph. It was at about 10psi idle. And 25 at 1600rpm. And at 2800rpm it was 40. So i guess its ok. The amc 360s arent known for high oil pressure.. the factory book says at 600rpm 13psi. . . But Its about the same as before. I really should probly drop the pan and pop a bearing cap off or two and look. I hear no noise no knock.. no tapping.. no rattling.. its an extremely quiet and smooth engine. But ya.. 100% no one changed the oil on it for decades i bet.

But with this much sludge ima have to change it very very often until im satisfied its clean. Maybe ill do the diesel in the oil pan trick.. pour luke 5 quarts in there.. and let it sit then drain it

Without doing an oil analysis you are just wasting time and money. I do oil changes every 5000 to 6000 miles and it's been 1300 miles since my last oil change and the oil is still like new.

@RayleighCriterion were nit talking about your engine that has had regular oil changes buddy. Were talking about a engine that hasnt had an oil change in years.. then i got it and changed the oil and after 1500 miles it turned into this thick goop. I dont need an oil analysis to tell the oil coming outa that pan is DONE.. look at it.. its thick... silvery.. needed a screw driver to get out.. lol

1,500 miles farm usage is probably way overdue. Better to go by hours or gallons of fuel used. Either way it looks like it’s eating parts and making the forbidden glitter. Keep us posted, interested to see what you end up doing with the old girl.

@@pjheloguy it wasnt farm use like youre thinking. It was driven 1500 miles to town and back hauling wood concrete etc and hay.. and thats 60mph to town and back 30 miles each trip. It isnt 1500 miles in the woods. Only a handfull were ever like that. The issue is the prior own never changed the oil and it gummed the FCK out of the engine. I wish i knew it was thia bad i woulda changed it multiple times after 50 miles. I refilled it and drove 10 miles at 65mph.. i drained it just now and its FILTHYYY again... geesh man.. So im taking the oil pan off now. The valve covers are off.. and suprisingly the rockers springs and what i cab see of the lifters.. are all shiney and clean. The heads arent sludgy.. but they are grimey. I turned the engine on with the covers off and they all pump up oil just fine. So now im super curious what the pan looks like inside.. and the rod bearings when i remove the caps..

Try 5 quarts of Valvoline Restore and Protect engine oil and a new oil filter. It’s supposed to clean engines with 4 consecutive oil and filter changes.
