I went nuts for Chris Cain in a club SoCal 1988. Have 2 albums. Bless you for bringing him back. Also saw him in a lounge San Jose.

I met Chris in Jazz Improv at San Jose City College in '79 I think it was. Even before we played, he stood out. He was wearing a dress shirt, blazer, round sunglasses and paperboy hat worn low with the brim touching his sunglasses, suggesting his shy demeanor. It looked like he came straight out of the 1940s and he would coyly sit crouched in his chair caressing a Gibson Birdland waiting to blow our minds. On the first day we all soloed over some blues changes and pretty much everyone sucked until it came to Chris. Even before he got to bar 12 everyone's jaw was on the floor. I doubt anyone in the room had ever heard blues guitar that good. I'm not kidding. Even back then he sounded like a cross between BB King, Robben Ford and Wes Montgomery. Everything he played was golden. I even remember one time during some performance he played bass and blew everyone's mind with a solo he took. He was really into Robben Ford at the time and would always be talking about his "Robben Tapes". They were a shoe box full of cassettes of live recordings of Robben playing in clubs around town. He would pour over them for hours and cop all his licks. I went to his house once to jam and his bedroom walls were plastered with all of his heroes. He played me a tape of a bass player, drummer and himself that was tight as hell. I asked who the other players were and he said they were just a couple of friends that weren't musicians but he taught them how to play a few days before the recording...lol. Unreal. Not only that but he's probably the most humble and kind person I've ever met.

I have a similar tale to tell from SJCC, early to mid 80s. Chris wore all that + some Chuck Taylors, and the instructor (first Darrell Johnston, then Dave Eshelman) would often sit Chris in front of the class to trade fours with us. Chris had a 335 when I knew him. I asked Chris for record suggestions, and he said "Hoodoo Man Blues by Junior Wells and Buddy Guy on the Delmark label" and "The Yellowjackets first album, with the yellow record jacket". The latter of course featured Robben. Good times. He truly was a decent and humble cat back then, and it certainly seems his global successes haven't changed that. I haven't seen him since 1990 or so. I took Jazz Improv every semester I attended SJCC...sometimes that's all I took. I worked sound for his band many times when they played Barney Steels in RWC, a master class every time.
