A short history of Rolling Stone Magazine is in order . Originally, before it became just a cooperate rag as it is today,. it was well respected publication. It was a great honor to be on its cover, or anywhere in it for that matter. That must be kept in mind when listening to this song to understand it

A great giggle is that when this song became a huge national hit, Rolling Stone Magazine ran the group's photo right up front under the headline, "What's-their-name gets their picture on the cover." What a great goof! Did he still make five copies for his mother?

That was nothing. There was another alternate video of this song on KZbin awhile ago, but I think it got taken down - think there’s a partial video up, but it’s not the whole thing. But it was maybe twice as long as this one, partly because the bassist was kinda tripping out and held notes for ridiculously long periods before going into another sprint

Dr Hook's first Top 40 hit was "Sylvia's Mother", which is completely different. It's a sad, sweet story of unrequited love. And it shows what kind of a range these guys had. However, I have to admit, my first exposure to them was on a PBS Special, hosted by Dick Cavett, called "VD Blues", in which they sang a song titled "Don't give a dose to the one you love most". Needless to say, I fell in love with them. As you go through their catalog, I would suggest some of their early work, like "Last Morning", "The Ballad of . . .", "Things I Didn't Say", "Carry me, Carrie", "Cooky & Lila", "The Millionaire", "Levitate", "Queen of the Silver Dollar", and, of course, "Sylvia's Mother". They have a number of other good songs as well, but not all he songs on the first 4 albums (Dr Hook, Sloppy Seconds, Belly Up, and Bankrupt) are, shall we say, KZbin Friendly. I personally think "Freaker's Ball" is absolutely hilarious, but KZbin might not think so. I suppose "I got stoned and I missed it" might slip by, and maybe "If I'd only Come and Gone", but I doubt they'd like "Penicillin Penny", and I know "Get my Rocks Off" would definitely trigger some people. But, hey, it's all just wacky fun by a bunch of 70s stoners. 😁

My all-time favorite Dr Hook song is Only Sixteen, a beautiful song about young love. It reminds me of a similar themed song from The Sound of Music, Sixteen Going On Seventeen. A (fictionalized) WWII themed musical based on a real family. Edit: Be cautious diving down that Dr Hook rabbit hole. They have some songs that will scandalize you, but they’ll have you singing the lyrics later. 😆

I saw them live in the early 80’s. It was pretty much like you’d expect, great music and total chaos. My eyes almost popped out of my head when they did Freakin’ at the Freaker’s Ball. They did make the cover, BTW!

Amber: Speaking of Shel Silverstein - you need to check out the book: "Where The Sidewalk Ends" - I know you like poetry - and, the poems in there: your girls are just about the right age to enjoy a LOT of them....some have much deeper meanings. My daughter, when she was a girl, enjoyed that book, together! He also wrote the book: "I'm Looking For My Missing Piece" - a CLASSIC in our house!! STILL love this song, after all these years!! SO MUCH FUN!!! GREAT reaction!! HUGS! ❤❤❤❤❤

This audio is the studio mix, placed over video footage of one of the best concerts ever made - Copenhagen 1974. I don't know what they were on, but you spend the whole show wondering what craziness will happen next, or if a song will even be finished lol. I HIGHLY recommend previewing the live version of Cover of the Rolling Stone( on youtube it's 3:17), channel that says Musikladen is right one. OR, watch all 35 minutes of mayhem (just type Copenhagen 1974) and it's a 35 minute video. It's so entertaining, you don't even have to like the band and you'll love it

So funny you should mention 'A Boy Named Sue" Both that song and this song were written by the same guy... Shel Silverstein. He wrote 'Where The Sidewalk Ends'

One of my favorite bands, you guys need to listen to some of their "innercuts" on their albums, The guitarist in the back with the glasses, Rik, is a friend and very good. The singer, Ray, really needed the eye patchm not a prop...he passed away a couple years ago.... you mentioned the "mountains of W. Virginia, he was from Mobile, Alabama....... try "Freakin' At The Freaker's Ball". "Bad-Eye Bill" or "Michaelangelo" for a chuckle or "Wonderful Soupstone" or "One More Year(Of Daddy's Little Girl)" for some emotions ( I guarentee even Rob will shed a tear or 100 over this one)

OMG...The first concert I ever went to. 1977 and in the 7th grade, my big sister took me to the Dr Hook concert in Alexandria Louisiana. When we got there, she disappeared and I was on my own and in shock and aw (think that would ever happen today?). 13 years old and on my own at a concert!!!!! And what was that funny smell ;) I have a special place in my heart for Dr Hook. Thank y'all. BTW I loved how this song has the "great" guitar solo and the next line is...."Aw that's beautiful man". Haha, classic.

One of the best top 40 songs ever written and performed by this band entitled "Sylvia's Mother". This song is a hoot! Great reaction guys, TY. BTW, they finally did make the cover of The Rolling Stone magazine on March 29, 1973.......... but it was in caricature form. How fitting for a bunch of rag tag cut ups! Great band!

I got to see these guys back around the time this song came out. It was a free concert outside of the local mall. The opening act was Redbone (of Come And Get Your Love fame). It was a great show. I think another band you might also like to check out is Brownsville Station and their song Smoking In the Boys Room.
