It's a tough song about an overly protective mother. Her coddling has trapped her son and not let him spread his wings and find himself. He ends up broken and asking, "did that wall have to be so high?" because it's ultimately being a detriment to him.

I don't pretend to be some all knowing song analyst or anything. But I've seen a lot of reactions to this song; and I don't really get how most reactors can possibly think this is a warm wholesome song about a mother's love.

4:52 *Enter Jeff Porcaro!* Yes indeed! Toto's drummer actually was hired to play the drums on the album, for a few songs, mother being one of them. This passage 4:52 not only have one of the most pristine guitar solos ever recorded, but also the tastiest drums ever slammed! The way Jeff flows is superior to anything else, and that off-beat bell never seizes to put a smile on my face. RIP JEFF

The thing about The Wall album is that the songs are connected to scenes of a concept. The movie didn't come out until a few years later, but Waters had the visual in his head, so a lot of the songs seem to not make sense in a way. You have to listen to the album in sequence.

You really should watch the film The Wall, peeps; it's intense and visceral at times but it's visually stunning(if you ever get a chance to see it on a big screen with big speakers!!)and the story told on film with the album is beautiful, and powerful. Do enjoy, perhaps with some of that scotch that J enjoys, as it's visual beauty is also very invitingly trippy; remember, it's Pink Floyd! Either way, enjoy!

The neat thing about music is how different people come up with different perceptions to song meanings. It's difficult to do albums in this reaction format, but both of you would thoroughly enjoy listening to this album in it's entirety and then watching the film. This would bring the story and the great music together for both of you full circle. As so many others have said, his mother was egregiously overprotective due to the death of her husband and it built a psychological "wall" up that wouldn't "let her son experience things/life on his own."

For quite a while, the second line of the song sounded to me like "Mother do you think they'll light the sun", which kinda made sense to me since the first line referred to the A-bomb being dropped... Which again turned the song even into darker meanning in my mind! Imagine when I finally got what Roger Waters was really singing! 😆 The whole album is so linked to me teens (my first party, my first girl, my first kiss...) that I just can't help feeling this enormous wave of nostalgia... The last line "...why did it have to be so high." is referring to the wall that his mother subconsciously helped build in him mentally. "The Wall" album in general is the mental wall that Roger Waters (the bass player who wrote 99% of "The Wall" album) built in his mind to isolate himself from people....hence the line in the song "another brick in the wall":".....all in all, you're just another brick in the wall"...meaning his wall in his mind and if u did him wrong or treated him like $hit, then all you are doing is adding another brick to my wall (i.e. making me hate people and their bull$hit even more)...and btw, The Wall in a concept album..every song is part of an overall story. You have to listen to it the entire album start to finish to get the total concept. The movie is kinda deep if u wanna check that out. Its very cerebral.

When it comes to songs from The Wall, you really need to experience the story as a whole and not jumping around from this song to that song. It’s a life story into depression, addiction, psychosis, and all the things that led to building this wall of protection. This song is so deep and with the context of the entire album makes more sense to the casual listener. You should also watch the film.

One thing about parenting today is we over protect instead of giving out children the room to fail and learn. My kids are now 23 and 22. It hit me when they were in their mid teens I can not protect them forever. They need the space to fail and learn to pick themselves up on their own. I can be their to encourage them but ultimately they will fail at things they try and that’s ok. Now I remind them it’s ok to fail at something. If it’s important keep trying till you succeed. If you now see that it’s not worth fighting for find something else to strive for. It was hard at first for them me switching gears on them but ultimately they are both happy and successful. Still falling at times. I remind them adulting is hard and I’ve been there. The fall is just a learning experience

now as an adult, i see The Wall as a little self-indulgent, but its still an awesome album. but back when it came out, and i was a lonely teenager who distrusted everyone and kept them all at arms length, or further, this album was transformational in speaking my life and i was not the same for a number of years after. the theme, music, production values combined moved me to a different plane. not sure if that was good or bad, but man what a fork in the road...i came to realization that i was my own destiny and to say f*ck off to everyone and closed down. this is not an easy song to listen to, since it is blaming the mother, and anyone close really, for a lot...not til i was an adult that i realized that people, especially family, mostly, do not intend to harm those close to them but are only doing the best they know how. mostly. go see the movie...

Some people just don't have a great relationship with their mom. For instance, Mother can be overbearing and not actually a healthy influence. This song is that dialogue between mother and son. One thing that makes the song great is that it doesn't truly take sides; the mother's "dialogue" is perfectly justifiable. Mother will keep you clean, protect you from the bad; she'll help you build a wall around yourself, just like you asked. ("Mother did it [the wall] need to be so high?") The problem you two present yourself with here (and with some other albums) is that the entire album tells a story from beginning to end. This song is just a single scene. Wouldn't you like to know what happens next? You may wish to watch the movie, "The Wall," which stars (at the time, a relatively still unknown) Bob Geldof. It's not a "feel good" movie, but neither is the album, as this song hints.

There are actually two voices in this song. Roger Waters singing with the higher pitched voice and David Gilmore singing the lower.

You should try to watch the movie with Geldof playing pink Floyd. It's a journey of isolation

Brain Damage and Eclipse are a couple of songs you should do a deep dive into. Both are off of the Dark Side of the Moon album

I just watched Roger Waters Comfortably Numb 2022. He used lightning strikes and a choir to cover David Gilmore's guitar. It was interesting. I think Waters and Gilmore have been arguing for 40 years about which is more surreal, Water's voice or Gilmore's guitar. I don't know the answer myself.
