Karen was one of a kind. There will never be another like her. She had such a pure calming voice. And she was a terrific drummer. That was her passion even more than singing. Sadly we lost her so young. Thankfully we have her legacy left in her music. The Carpenters had so many great songs such as "(They Long to Be) Close to You", "For All We Know", "Rainy Days & Mondays", "Superstar", "Goodbye To Love", "Top Of The World", "Sing", "Yesterday Once More", "I Won't Last A Day Without You", "Please Mr. Postman", "Only Yesterday", "There's A Kind Of Hush (All Over the World)" & so many more.

Karen was actually not a great drummer. She could keep a soft rock beat. But that was the 70s back when PETA wasn't making waves and they used to teach chimps and orangutans to drum pop and soft rock beats Second. Most beautiful female voice ever. Yet, she actually lived a long time in her brother's shadow.. he was considered d the musical prodigy of the family (on piano) and the one his mother thought would be a star. Karen began drumming in high school and had a real knack for it, but it came as a bit of surprise to everyone that it was her voice that the world fell in love with when the Carpenters (Karen and Brother Richard) became famous. For his part, Richard seemed content enough with her being in the spotlight, he had an amazing talent for arranging music to show off her voice's best qualities. She was called "one take Karen" because she rarely hit a wrong note while singing, she had perfect pitch. But she was never quite comfortable in the spotlight, and when her brother and managers pressured her to come out from behind her drum kit and sing front and center (something she did NOT want to do) she became increasingly self-conscious about her looks and ended up with a severe case of Anorexia, eventually starving herself down well below 90 pounds. (at least 20 lbs below what would be a MINIMUM healthy weight for someone her age/size) Her fans gasped at her appearance when she walked on stage, afraid she had cancer or was on drugs. Her family and friends knew she had a serious problem, but most people had never heard of Anorexia before, and they had no clue how to help her. Just telling an Anorexic like her to "just eat!" doesn't really work. When she did finally seek help, even the Doctors knew so little about Anorexia, they just pumped her full of IV nutrition and put 30 lbs on her in a few weeks. That further strained her heart that had been severely damaged from years of starving herself, and abusing laxatives. So one morning her heart just failed. It was her death that brought public attention to Eating disorders for the first time. Anorexia Nervosa is still considered the mental illness with the highest mortality rate. In other words, a higher percentage of people with Anorexia die, than those that die from any other mental illness. And eating disorders are still VERY difficult to treat, relapse is super common.

Ironically, when Playboy readers voted her best drummer one year, John Bonham was not amused. Angrily said she couldn't play a Zep tune on drums. When she heard that at a party, she sat down and played along with his drumming on one of their songs. While also doing the vocals. Guessing Bonzo was even less amused when he heard about that.

The best female voice of all time. Unmatched for her tone, warmth and vocal range. As of today, October 15, 2023, Richard Carpenter is working on a new studio album. This album will be her first solo recording since 1987's "Time Out of Mind." Carpenter has been working on the album for several years, and has been searching for a vocalist who can fill the void left by her sister Karen, who died in 1983. In an interview with Billboard in 2022, Carpenter said that the album will have a sound similar to that of the Carpenters, but that it will also be an evolution of his sound. "It's still soft rock, but it's a little more modern," Carpenter said. "There's also a bit of experimentation." Carpenter has not yet announced a release date for the album, but has said that he hopes it will be released in 2024. In addition to his work on the new album, Carpenter is also working on a documentary about the life and career of the Carpenters. The documentary, which is being produced by the company "Greenwich Entertainment", will be released in 2024. Carpenter also continues to tour and give concerts. In 2023, he toured the United States with singer-songwriter Michael Feinstein. There is no voice today that compares to Karen Carpenter's. She was a unique musical genius in the world and goes far beyond her time. It without autotune or any other manipulation. Just her voice and her brother Richard's incredible arrangements. No current artist can match this in this era. Karen was also one of the best drummers of her time and she could sing well while she played the drums simultaneously. A true top talent. RIP Karen Carpenter, We will always remember you and love you!!! QEPD Karen Carpenter, ¡¡¡ Siempre te recordaremos y te querremos!!! 💛💛💛

Check out some of her drum solo performances or any video of Karen Carpenter drumming and singing or just drumming! She is amazing, and the look on her face when drumming is pure happiness.

The Carpenters are still THE most remarkable music group I have ever heard and they were up and coming when I was an early teenager!!! The range of the vocals, the arrangements of music that Richard would re-work and turn them into magic is WhT made them SO special and wonderful!!! I still LOVE immersing myself in their music! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

Doug Strawn is playing flute, he also played Harmonica and horn. Also all of the band played multiple instruments, Karen of course played drums, few know she also played Bass. The sad part is all in that band is dead now except Richard. Cubby O'Brien one of the original mousketeers was the drummer who played on their overseas tours. Cubby is still living.

i`ve just watched this whole video with a smile on my face the whole time, your reaction whilst not surprising, is just priceless young sir, i love it :) Carpenters were the biggest selling group of the 70`s, out-selling the beatles and elvis put together!! One of a kind voice that has never been matched and probably never will.

Doug Strawn and Bob Messenger (RIP) were indeed terrific! But the band is lip synching in this video to the studio recording, and in the studio, the tambourine player on almost every Carpenters track was... Karen. Rarely credited! But just another example of her incredible talent. Hal Blaine on drums... one of the greatest studio drummers of his era.

@@catherder78 Yep...some shows insisted that they lipsync as part of the contract.

@@matrox it's important for Carpenters fans to remember, however, that most of the early videos of the Carpenters posted on KZbin were taken from the DVD of the summer replacement TV series called "Make Your Own Kind of Music", which ran from July 20 to September 7, 1971. This quirky, campy, not-always-PC show was built around the Carpenters to showcase their music (with the guidance of A&M Studios; Herb Alpert, A&M co-owner, was also a regular on the show). So all of these wonderfully nostalgic music videos from that 1971 summer replacement show were lip-synched, not contractually, but intentionally, as part of the programming. Karen was so good at lip-synching you never really think about it... just get lost in the song and her incredible voice as soon as she opens her mouth. Richard didn't like all the silly acts they had to do on the show but I enjoy watching what's been released on KZbin.

First album I bought in 1970. Her voice. Her drums. Richard's piano and harmony. Great musicians joining them. Listen to a little known short song they made called Sometimes. Actually one of my favorites over Close To You, Rainy Days And Mondays, A Song For You, Superstar.

Karen Carpenter had one of the best voices ever and you could understand every word. This is one of those songs (along with Close to You, also by the Carpenters) that everyone of a certain generation had at their wedding reception. A brother and sister team - Richard on piano and Karen on drums.

Im on my late 60s, so remember KC very well on the radio and TV specials. She began, with her brother Richard, by playing drums. Richard, her brother, was a terrific arranger but KC's voice was discovered by Herb Alpert in 1969 which began their road to fame. Richard convinced her that her best singing voice was contralto, 'the money is in the basement'. I believe KC's, voice, especially contralto, was the best female voice ever. No auto-tune, stripping, gimmicks, or screaming. Her nickname was 'one take', since she always sang a song once in studio without a single re-take. She sang to you with mesmerizing emotion, perfect pitch and enunciation. Her voice compelled you to listen. She had no professional voice training. Paul McCartney said she sang Ticket To Ride better than the Beatles, and "she had the most angelic voice I have ever heard". John Lennon told her at an LA restaurant "you have a fabulous voice luv". Every female harmony in all of her songs was hers as well, sang, then dubbed into the song by Richard. They were most successful in early/mid1970s when she received 4 grammys. She was also recognized by 1975 Playboy poll as rock drummer of the year. She never knew true love, nor how good she really was. Check other songs such as 'Superstar' 'Solitaire', 'Only Yesterday', 'Hideaway', 'Rainy Days and Mondays','I Can Dream Cant I', 'Hurting Each Other', 'Need To Be In Love', 'Goodbye To Love', etc.. She had low self-image, and could never seem to please her mother. She had a few friends including Dionne Warwick. She had serious onset of anorexia in 1975 that continued the rest of her life. Married a guy in 1982 that was broke, not who she thought, and mistreated her. Never knew true love. She died Feb 1983 at 32yo due to complications from anorexia. [Some info contained herein came from documentaries such as, "Only Yesterday"].
