Stora Tuna Church is built near a cult site dedicated to the Æsir god Frey and on an older grey stone church from the 13th century. It was consecrated in 1469 by the bishop of Västerås. The church was built without a tower but otherwise still has the same size and shape. The first tower was built at the end of the 16th century but was already destroyed by fire in 1590. It was replaced by a new tower that was severely damaged by fire on two occasions after being struck by lightning in 1664 and 1807. Today's church tower was built between 1914 and 1915, during the First World War, and was designed by architect Axel Lindegren. The tower is 86 meters high and has a copper roof.
The church houses a copy of Gustav Vasa's Bible, the first Bible translation into Swedish, published in 1541.
