One reason your 1st pump may have died was you ran it for almost 10 seconds "dry" before starting to add any coolant. With many pump designs that can be a really BAD idea, without any load on it the pump free spins at a much higher RPM and can fry the motor. To play it safe it's best to first fill the system with as much will drain in by gravity before turning on the pump. Then make sure the reservoir or inlet to the pump doesn't run dry at all once you turn the pump on and quickly kill the power if it gets close to running dry.
