Thank you for reacting to this. Jeff had a beautiful soul and voice. He only put out one album - "Grace" - before he died in a tragic drowning accident in the Mississippi River in Memphis, TN. He had moved there to finish recording his second studio album and one night he spontaneously jumped in the river with his clothes on to swim and was pulled under by a tugboat's wake. He was only 30, but his impact on music was huge. And musician Rebecca Moore was the inspiration for the entire "Grace" album.

I met Jeff about a month before he died. I’m from the Little Rock area-about 3 hours from Memphis-my husband and i and a couple friends went to see him testing his new material at Barristers, a total dive bar where he was performing every week while in Memphis working on the next album. We were sitting in a balcony area; I went downstairs for a drink, and when I turned around Jeff was literally standing in my way at the bottom of the stairs, leaning against the doorway. No way I could pass up the opportunity. I think I kinda scared the poor guy at first, just walking up and introducing myself: probably thought I was after him-never mind I was kinda towering over him lol-but I quickly told him I wasn’t hitting on him, I was with my husband and friends, and we were thrilled about the upcoming album, etc. He visibly relaxed and accepted my invitation to join our table until his turn on stage. The best part was the looks on the guy’s faces when they saw who was walking back to the table w/me! 🤣 A month later, we couldn’t believe it: missing and presumed dead. He wasn’t from around here, he didn’t seem to understand that you do NOT swim in the Mississippi River, even in the waist-deep water in the Wolf river harbor (off the main channel), where he was. The eddies and undertow are legendary. I’ve never been more upset over the death of someone I didn’t even know personally. Michael Hutchence (INXS)-in Nov the same yr, ‘97-was a close second though.

Flawless. Jeff is pure. We missed him in my circle when he left, but looking back on people that discover him only now, I feel more robbed. In the years that he created he was not appreciated, because grunge was in full effect. Listen to him. He created in a time that music was moving only in a few ways. Jeff did Jeff. I'm lucky to have heard him when I did. I, personally, rate Jeff as the purest male vocalist that I have ever heard in my life. We all missed out on the future when he left us.

This song is one that he worked on the lyrics for a while. There are a couple earlier recordings with slightly different lyrics because he revised it a few different times. He wanted to tell a story with this song. It’s not necessarily about any woman in particular. But it is beautiful.

Please please please, do his cover of 'Satisfied Mind' I've loved Jeff since I was 15, and was lucky enough to have seen him play live twice back then in 1995. I was devastated when he went missing and later found drowned. He only released one full album, but he was so prolific in his live concerts and I think he's the King of covers. Someone else mentioned his live version of Grace on the BBC- definitely need to check that out to see his powerful live performance.

Please react to Jeff Buckley’s version of “Hallelujah”. The song was written by Leonard Cohen, who wrote around 80 different verses. A lot of artists have covered it so sometimes you get different variations of verses. Jeff’s is the most hauntingly beautiful version of the song I’ve ever heard. Also, let’s be clear, the song sounds like a religious one, but it’s about sex. The biblical references confuse most people into thinking it’s a church song. It is not appropriate for church. LOL Anyway, I think you’ll appreciate it. Enjoy.
