Yep. All of the "cool" examples of this kind of weapon - Ivy's Valentine from Soul Calibur, Renji's Zabimaru from Bleach, the one from Demon Slayer whose name escapes me, etc... - they're all "magical" in some way, where the wielder is not only swinging it, but actually controlling the expansion/contraction/whip-like qualities of the weapon. The point of a whip, nunchaku, or other flail-like weapon is to have the flexibility to grapple or entangle a foe in some way (such as by the neck, a limb, or as a weapon grab) or strike around cover (shields, pillars, corners, etc.) while being threatening enough to an area that the opponent has to consider how bad they would injure themselves advancing on the wielder. In practice, this sounds like a good thing, but *then* you consider the protective stopping power of armor and the weapon becomes far less effective and threatening.

Just because weapon was not used on battlefield or not commonly found on the battlefield it doesn't mean they were useless.
@Kameeho3 күн бұрын
Hi! I would like to interject about the "Urumi" not being a weapon. The Urumi was very much used as a weapon of combat in India, as there are several records of them being used in various wars. While I do not disagree with the statement "whip swords are horrible weapons". There is a reason why the Urumi was reserved for only the Best of the Best fighters in India. The training of the Urumi was a essental parts of the Kalari martial arts mastery of weapons, and was usually the final weapon learned to master for obvious reasons. Being seen able to Master the Urumi was also seen as a high status thing, i.e similar to being a renowned sword master. However as a Weapon of combat, it is not used the way you think it would be used. Much like the Spanish Montante, it's Flourishes that you see were designed for Warfare in mind. It is not a weapon ment to outright kill an opponent. But a weapon ment for Area of Denial. Meant to ward off multiple apponents trying to approach. Much like how Spanish guards using the Montante would use their flourishes to deny opponents to approach them and thus able to block off the street or alley, from any enemies trying to pass through. You also have to remember that in South and South East Asia. Elepehants played a crucial part in Warfare, and was a powerfull asset in their armies. but as powerfull as the elephants were, They were still quite vournarable as they are a huge target and their leggs and feet weren't particularly easy to armor up. This is why you had special guards stationed around Elephants to help protect the elephants vournarable flanks, and prevent opponents from wounding the elephant. This is where weapons such as the Urumi comes into play. A Urumi master would use their flourishes and unpredictability of the Sword to keep multiple opponents away, and it's not like it's a easy weapon to block either, the blade was still razor sharp and could inflict some serious wounds, and the nature of Flexible weapons also ment that it wasn't simple to use Shields either. If you also see how many of these flourishing techniques are used, you also notice how the Urumi flourishes often to swipes close to the ground. I.e Aiming at the feets of the enemie. Most soldiers in South Asia and Southeast Asia didn't really use Armored greaves and boots at the time, and much like Roman Soldiers, wearing nothing but sandals, or barefoot even. You also see something similar being done in other armies where Elephants play a central role in their formation. Such as the Dual-sword wielding Elephant Guards in Thailand known as Jaturungkabart, (Where you see just as much flourishes used in Krabi-Krabong martial arts that was used for the Dual wielding swords) To to summerise the Urumi short: -It was used in Combat as a Area of Denial weapon. -It was essential in the Kalari Martial Arts training and the final wepaon to master. -It was used as a Status symbol. -It was used in various religious ceremonies.

@Valchrist13133 күн бұрын
Sure we have the technology. For example, two cables could run through the links and connect solidly to the point. When tensioned, it would be a complete sword, and when loosened it would form a whip. The plates that make up the sword could be shaped so that they interlock even, to help the mechanical strength when solid. Something like a spring could be used as a spacer, which collapses on to a central hollow when compressed/retracted in to a solid piece, which would also give it the effect of springing in to whip mode, which would be pretty cool.
@alexturnbackthearmy19073 күн бұрын
@@Valchrist1313 It works, but it sucks EVEN more compared to regular sword. The blade remains flexible even after being locked, unless you use copious amount of tension, and blade itself falls apart quite easily due to its complex construction with hollow spaces inside. Didn't realize this before seeing this video... this has a similar problem to the wolverine claws, in the sense that the attacking force gets spread over several impact points. With the added drawback that each point carries very little mass behind it. Armor can deflect each little blade individually. At 7:30 the whip follows through and hits Tyranth on his back. He doesn't even seem to notice. Now if the thing could be made to slice at an angle, it could be quite nasty to unarmored folks. Like the world's most unpractical chainsaw.

Those things only work in animes or in Soul Calibur videogames because they function as a lightsaber: swing a whipsword against a body or a wall and it won't lose the grip and the movement of a whip. In real life, the slightest resistance causes the momentum of the whipsword to stop and, actually, makes it a... broken sword. How could anyone bring a broken sword to battle?
@sitnamkrad3 күн бұрын
I'm pretty sure there's some actual lore behind it in Soul Calibur. Though it's been a while since I've read up on it, I believe Ivy (the wielder of the whipsword) had multiple failed attempts at trying to make one that works. The only reason she eventually succeeded is because she used a shard of Soul Edge (magical cursed sword thingie). So even in what's probably the most famous depiction of it, it only works because of magic.
@charlesmaurer62143 күн бұрын
While a bad idea in general, I have 2 changes I think would improve the design some. One the edged segments would be better curved in an ellipse or egg shape. Second, reducing the chain links between the bladed parts. A single link I think would work better and increase the percentage of the length in blade. Striking your own side in a swing is a real safety concern that does demand protection that would also render it next to useless of a foe with the same protection.
@Phantomsbreath2 күн бұрын
So of note, first impressions? This is a momentum based weapon. Treat it as such. Longer *is* better, up to a point. Sure, it takes longer to get your edge up to speed, but it also cuts better, because you've got more momentum behind your tip. Which is where the real power is. As someone who made one of these for fun, (though admittedly, I followed the Ivy example, and didn't join the bits together, instead opting for a wire down the center) I can tell you that it's a nasty cutter, but it *does* take a *lot* of practice.

The Indian Urumi was used more like a defensive weapon, particularly when facing multiple opponents alone. It is good at keeping people away. It is a very sharp sword (not like the practice ones they use these days) and is dangerous to the user as well. This would only really be worth it if the conditions are that desperate. They usually wrap it around their stomach when not in use and it kind of acts as armor as well in that way. It was definitely not meant to be used against armored opponents. You should get one from India and try it out, rather than such makeshift whip swords. Authentic weapons have hundreds of years of refinement behind them unlike than ramshackle toys like this. For instance, the Urumi is said to be wrapped around the opponent's neck and then when it is pulled the sword flexes, and the edge is aligned ready to cut through the neck. Such things cannot be simulated by crap swords like this. Also, these unconventional weapons have techniques with a completely different logic. You should consult someone who knows how to use them rather than play around with them.
@tabull81803 күн бұрын
That is approaching to "everything is great if you are master of it" -category of weapons. @@aruunmenon But how does it being a whip assist it in that manner compared to similarly flailing about a normal sword? Unless you are relying on it specifically appearing scarier than doing such with a normal sword, I don't see how making it such is other an advantage other than it simply being an expensive prestige weapon to show of wealth rather than practicality. Looked through some 12 videos of people using it, and every time they are just ineffectually flailing it about where even an unarmed determined attacker could likely just accept they might take a probably non-serious cut to then easily kill an opponent. Even just thick clothing likely would be sufficient to protect one self from the demonstrations they made. Edit: Just in case it was a language barrier me and my Indian mate both used google scholar to try and find effective demonstrations or at least texts citing their usage in specific battles or suchlike, and there just isn't anything. It appears like it was just an entirely unknown niche gimmick weapon that then became popularized in the 1920's from association with Indian nationalism.

I think the point of a whip sword is that it’s supposed to be made with interlocking sections held together with a length of internal cable. That way, when the interlocking sections are together, they functions as a regular sword, with the internal cable providing tension to keep the sword together. Then, when one wants to, they can release that tension from the cable, a la push the button Kronk, and allow the sword to function as a whip. That way, one can sword fight traditionally with the sword locked together by the tension of the internal cable and then release that tension to activate the whip function to throw their opponent off guard. That would function better than welding sword fragments together with what appears to be bike chains. Nonetheless, good attempt though. I have to go now, my tablet is running low on charge.

Side note that was cool medieval style watches I looked them up and they're quite expensive and they look really cool... But seeing as I probably won't be able to see the face very clearly I wish they had a version that talked... It wouldn't have to be as fancy as a smartwatch or anything complicated like that but perhaps a slightly more digitized version where I could still have the analog face and everything for aesthetics but perhaps a button where you can press and it would literally say the time and things like that.. I mean I think it could be easily done they had talking watches when I was a kid and that was a long time ago. If anyone actually takes the time to read this, please feel free to send it to the watchmaking company that makes those cool watches maybe I'll open up a few more business opportunities for them.

All of the watches that company makes are 100% mechanical. There are no electrical components involved, you couldn't add a push to tell feature on a watch like this.
@Blindy_Sama2 күн бұрын
@DH-xw6jp that makes sense and to make a hybrid of the two will probably be a huge pain in the butt... Not to mention kind of counterproductive... That's too bad though the pictures of the watches are gorgeous oh wow more for everyone else I suppose :-)

I see a version of the weapon that might have potential as a secondary weapon guys! Lets say you add a rigide blade of maybe 16 inch or 20 (or more to have enough reach) inch like a traditional sword and then at the end of the blade addind the chain blade with anough length to be able to grapple around arms or legs of the oponnent to control for exemple grappling the arm holding the weapon before taking him down with your main weapon !

The most recent example I've seen in less popular pop culture is from the Black Talon book series. They call it a lashblade and it has an extended and a retracted form. I don't remember the authors or characters talking anout the limitations in the earlier books, only the advantage of range and force multiplication on the tip, but to he fair in the last book, that I'm currently listening to now, they do actually address the concerns of using this weapon and they only use it for pierving at the tip in its extended form. There's even a part where the wielder injures her dominant arm mid-battle and goes to retrieve it with her off-hand before she realizes internally that she is more likely to hurt herself than actually get use out of the weapon since she hasn't trained with that for her entire life.

13:55 Shad is very correct here. I've never realized it, but when I was younger I liked overdesigned chunky fantasy swords, even Frostmourne looked pretty cool to me (though even then it was a little too much). Later, when I learned how swords actually work, my preference shifted to the more realistic designs. Though I'm not sure about the whip sword... Maybe it's just because I like Ivy as a character. Yes, for all the right and wrong reasons.

That wire cord sword someone was making some months ago was pretty cool. Could definitely deal damage with SOME retracting power, but still not practical by any stretch
@j4s0n39Күн бұрын
You could make it much better by extending the handle, putting a small chain on there, and then just putting a heavy or spiked ball on the end.
@sandman_says_runrunner47013 күн бұрын
The only damage advantage I could see is if you used a chainsaw action on it. Meaning, after it wraps around a limb or neck you pull straight back like a starter cord on a motor and the sword pieces act like chainsaw teeth on the wrapped appendage. Though even that is a stretch and would require the whip sword to be longer.

despite all the problems with it, if you used a longer one to entangle limbs or something i think it would have decent effect but armor would mitigate that especially plate, but the edges could bite into flesh reasonably well to hold on

I love a flexible chain-based weapon! Very concealable. After making contact you just reverse direction or follow through. It's not dangerous to the user once you develop a chain predicting computer in your head. Some chain-based weapons (like nun chucks) are just awkward, but a weighted chain is glorious.... Making the chain the weapon instead of the tip throws away plenty of range advantage! :D

There is a similar weapon in the shadow fight games called "composite sword", It's blades are able to retract completely to form a solid edge (which is probably not that sharp but still useable) It's extension is dependent on how much power you use and it only starts to extend when it can't hit it's user anymore But it would probably not work in real life

You CAN get edge alignment with a Urami, you could make one to test from steel banding straps, some banding is even high enough carbon to heat treat. The Urami has two issues that make it not a "good" weapon. First is that they are about as effective as a piece of string against armor, but people didn't always wear armor. Second is the amount of training needed to be competent is way too much for anyone not fully dedicating their life to the study of the floppy blade.

Take an urumi (already super impractical) and worsen its design, what you get is a whip sword
@LukasJampenКүн бұрын
If we were in a world with magic or telekinesis it could be a really tricky and flexible weapon. In a book series I read about vampires, the MC later on uses a sword that can switch between Sword and Whipsword and for her it works because it is literally a part of her being and she can manipulate it at will. In that case it makes it very easy to get around defenses and still deliver a certain amount of punch. But yes in reality they are extremely unpractical and any amount of armour makes them completely useless.

The flail, specifically the threshing flail which gained prominence with the Hussites, was a terrific weapon.
@bernieburton65203 күн бұрын
The chain sword only works with magic. You need it to be long and controlled through something like psychokinetic powers. That way you can basically use it like a sharp and pointy tentacle. Even thrusting with it.

Its crazy, it's almost like thousands of years of real-world battlefield testing allowed us to figure out the most practical weapons to kill each other with. Crazy!
@SpiceCh3 күн бұрын
You could perhaps construct a chain with an internal wire mechanism and an interlocking guide to lock the chain in place when a lever in the handle is held down. This would restrict the blade's whip movement along a single axis, ensuring the edges won't flail and spin in a million different directions when used in this way, and giving the option of straightening the blade with the wire mechanism when a studier weapon is needed. But, needless to say, engineering and assembling such a contraption would be meticulous and probably expensive work. But it's the only way I imagine you could produce a remotely useful blade with a whip function. Of course, the chain links would be a point of failure if the sword is struck at an off angle, but I never claimed it would be perfect.
@impaledface76942 күн бұрын
If it was longer it might be able to wrap around a limb or torso and score it on retraction. I would also increase the weight of the tip so it has more momentum to wrap around, heck maybe add a hook on the end so it digs into flesh. I think this is like most unconventional weapons, it would take a while to develop a technique, and it would still end up being not as viable.
@KYNF90003 күн бұрын
I think there is a pole-arm with chains hanging on the end that entangles swords or other weapons and then you can just thrust the unarmed enemy. I think that would be interesting to see how effective the entanglement is.

Imagine a sword whip that's rigid like a regular sword until it comes into contact with something, and then it wraps around quickly, digging the blades in, then when you pull it moves like a chainsaw

@Vienticus2 күн бұрын
What if you try the whip sword with a single metal wire that goes from hilt to tip to hilt, providing edge alignment while providing flexibility? You'd have to put limiters on sections of the wire to allow for flex while keeping the segments in relative positions.

The whip sword that comes to mind for me is the one used by "Jean-Francios" in 2001s "Brotherhood of the Wolf" (Le Pact de Loups for the Frenchies out there). That one was actually an extending/retracting BONE whip sword ... lol.

Such weapons break one's kinetic chain. Which saps the power out of one's blow. Only way to counter that a little would be to keep it moving & even then it's still going to suck.
@LCCWPresents2 күн бұрын
There’s martial arts styles in India that deal with whip swords. The only reason they suck, is because they require years of training to use properly. In literature theirs a prince that used one to cut down 9 enemies at once. Just like any other weapon, using whip swords without the proper training becomes worthless (like trying to use a long sword to cut down a tree.).
