United States citizen here, with no shortage of love for my homeland . . . But this brought tears to my eyes. I was not previously familiar with this anthem (I had heard only the other one), so it was all new to me. Certainly, this video is beautifully made and Cindy Ruakere offers a splendid performance, but there was something else. I've made myself familiar with many national anthems: some warn that enemies are about to slit the throats of our wives and children, so we should make the furrows of our fields run with their impure blood (seriously!), some boast of their nation's vast resources and beauty, and one dear to my heart describes a battle in which the singer's country prevailed against all odds. But this anthem . . . THIS anthem, is a prayer to God for the singer's country. And the things prayed for are so noble, so honorable, so decent, and so utterly worthy of being prayed for that one has to admire the spirit of a people who would choose such a song to represent them. Who in these times asks God to protect their homeland from dissension, envy, and hate? Who exalts the bonds of love the bind the citizens of a nation together? Who prays, not just for peace and for victory over enemies, but that the nation's cause be just and right and that it be free from dishonor and shame? Then, there is the simple humility of the song. No bragging. No call to let an enemy's blood run in the fields. No call to unite and achieve greatness over all nations. Just an earnest, heartfelt prayer that God defend the singer's country, grant it peace and harmony, and make it a force for truth, good, and love in the world. I was powerfully moved. I will never think of New Zealand the same way again. God Defend New Zealand!

TMCP You are welcome. I've become more vocal about things like this in the past few months, if only because I'm tired of being treated and seeing others being treated as intellectual midgets because of our faith. Now, I don't pretend to be one of the Great Minds of Our Time, but with two university degrees, one of which is a law degree, twenty years as a successful attorney, and three successful published novels in a highly-technical and extremely challenging genre, I'm certainly not an intellectual midget. I think that people of faith need to be outspoken, not necessarily in direct advocacy of our faith, but in stating positions that are clearly grounded in our faith without the sort of mental looking down and shuffling our feet and saying in an embarrassed tone of voice, "this belief comes out of my strong faith." We need to proclaim these things without shame or reserve and, when attacked as being dim witted or illogical or delusional we need to engage those attackers and pound them flat--not for the purpose of "winning" but to show each other and the world that our faith is an intellectually sound and reasonable position AND to demonstrate that we are not afraid to let the world know that we march behind the Banner of Christ. Now, if your wonderful, beautiful, free-thinking country would come back around to its former positions on civil liberties and return to the people their sacred rights to posses the implements of self-defense . . . .

H. Paul Honsinger I'm an American atheist. What I love about this...."prayer"....as you so elegantly put it, is, as you also stated, full of humility. A simple, heartfelt prayer to a god, with no boasting, no outward preaching, and nothing but the conveyance of beauty and peace; that's the sort of religion I can disagree with as an atheist, yet still have much respect for.

I am a South Korean who lived in Aotearoa New Zealand from Year 5 to Form 4. During those years I got to know about God, and I experienced so many other good things. Selling chocolates and cookies for 40 Hour Famine, going fishing on the beaches (I lived near Davenport/Takapuna), listening to Che Fu, Shihad, Split Enz, and Bic Runga, eating CalCiYum and sausage rolls (with bare hands of course!) and Hokey Pokey while watching rugby (my team the Blues!), and finally... cheering for the All Blacks with all my heart following Haka all the time for every single All Blacks game I watched. Ma'a Nonu my man! You guys were so so so sweet to me. I learned that everyone could be treated the same no matter where you were from. Fair and square, just like how Jesus treats us. I come to know of my sin and Christ through the prayers of my NZ church brothers and sisters. I really miss home New Zealand, I call it home Part of me still longs for life back then, Which I thought would never end O how distant we are But this music makes us not so far One day (I tell my girlfriend all the time we will go to New Zealand for our honeymoon) I will go back to my land of Blues(ocean) and Greens(beautiful nature) and Whites(Sheep!). Oh, and Rangitoto my first volcano!!! Will be praying for you guys until I die. Love you guys dearly and wholeheartedly. She'll be alright, mate!

We had just moved to NZ and our neighbors were a Maori couple who were just amazing and brought us so much stuff for our new born and always made sure we were ok. God bless them. I can never forget the beautiful country. My kids missed it so much that they have moved back. Each time we listen to NZ national anthem it brings tears to my eyes. Today we are watching our favourite team All blacks playing with Argentina. The NZ national anthem was so beautifully sung by this beautiful kiwi and everyone joining in the national anthem. They, ... will come after the flag again, and next, is our Anthem, the Anthem is their, real target,,, they want God out of EVERYTHING. All, we ever see on our screens, are insults, to God, Jesus, and Christians. But never any other faiths. And a certain church, is leading the way. They call their leader, His holy father. And call no man your father upon the earth: for one is your Father, which is in heaven. Matthew 23 : 9 For there shall arise false Christs, and false prophets, and shall shew great signs and wonders; insomuch that if it were possible, they shall deceive the very elect. Matthew 24 : 24 But take ye heed: behold, I have foretold you all things. Mark 13 : 23 This Anthem has more meaning than ever. God Bless

I live in Canada, which is about as far away from New Zealand as it gets. I just have to say that although I have not heard every national anthem of every country on Earth, "God Defend New Zealand" is the best national anthem I've ever heard and I have trouble believing that anyone could do it better. Whenever I hear this I think Canada's national anthem could use some Iroquois lyrics.

Genuinely beautifully written lyrics. A lot of anthems manage to be very generic “our good country will be the best good country we have tough soldiers rah rah” This song however is so beautifully written and full of genuinely impressive poetry and imagery. I particularly love: “peace not war shall be our boast, but should foes assail our coast, make us then a mighty host, god defend our free land”

I am a South Korean who lived in Aotearoa New Zealand from 5th grade to Form 4. During those years I got to know about God, and I experienced so many other good things. Selling chocolates and cookies for 40 Hour Famine, going fishing on the beaches (I lived near Davenport/Takapuna), listeng to Che Fu, Shihad, Split Enz, and Bic Runga, eating CalCiYum and Sausage Rolls (with bare fingers of course!) and Hokey Pokey while watching Rugby (My team the Blues!), and finally... cheering for the All Blacks with all my heart following Haka all the time for every single All Blacks game I watched. Ma'a Nonu my man! You guys were so so so sweet to me - the white and Maori respectively. I learned that everyone could be treated the same no matter where you are from. Fair and square, just like how Jesus treats us. I come to know of my sin and Christ through the prayers of my NZ church brothers and sisters. I really miss home. New Zealand, I call it home Because part of me still longs for life back then, Which I thought would never end O how distant we are But this music makes us not so far One day (I tell my girlfriend all the time we will go to New Zealand for our honeymoon) I will go back to my land of Blues(ocean) and Greens(beautiful nature) and Whites(Sheep!). Oh, and Rangitoto my first volcano!!! Will be praying for you guys until I die. Love you guys dearly and wholeheartedly. SHE'll BE ALRIGHT.

***** I'm not sure whether you are a New Zealander yourself, but I doubt that the use of the term would offend anyone from that beautiful country, just as the use of the name All Blacks would not offend - both names are highly respected in sporting circles around the world (no more so than here in South Africa!). I don't think being an 'outsider' changes that. Anyway, no insult intended.

@petnzme01 You are the shithead who made some offhanded comment about a country which I seriously doubt you have been to and are just basing your comment on stupid videos on KZbin or Commonwealth-based social media. For the record, I have traveled and found people from other countries to be very ignorant in their own right. Fortunately, most are willing to overcome their ignorance. For the record, most of the Kiwis I have encountered are not like you or your comments. A few British, maybe ( you want to be like British?), some Canadians (I have several Canadian cousins, and can tell you that you do NOT want to be like Canadians), and some Australians. All have ignorant and obnoxious tourists to a degree. Most American tourists, I have found, are among the most respectful, on average. We do have some buttwipes, as New Zealand clearly has at least one, you.
