I have very picky perfect pitch. A song can be spoiled for me by the singer being a tiny fraction of a note, or missing a tiny fraction of a beat. But this is where I can really appreciate having perfect pitch. The chanteuse nailed every note and was flawless in tempo. Nice, subtle vibrato , good dynamics and great portamento. and swell. And you can see, she's really in the groove. I know just how good that feels, because I'm a singer and guitarist myself. I was in tears. Worth it. I believe she has perfect pitch, too, where a note isn't just a frequency, but a distinguishable shape or colour.

I respectfully disagree. In my book, this is a good cover, but it lacks the lyrical coloring of the original. Her voice is also "harder" - with an edge - than Sinatra's voice, which was on the "pretty" side.

@QTheMusicShow. I have been looking forward to purchasing that book by Jon Burlingame about the James Bond music soundtrack scores for quite a while now. It must have been one of the other Bond film music soundtrack recording sessions that Barry was referring to when I think he said it took 12 takes to get a particular song just right.

@QThe MusicShow.Not to be picky, (and I realize of course that you said "30 takes" to illustrate your point) but actually I think I heard John Barry say once that they had to record Nancy's vocal in 12 takes because she was such a nervous wreck that she couldn't sing "You Only Live Twice" straight through. He just couldn't get her to settle down and relax - probably because by that time in 1967, the Bond film music scores were so hugely popular and Nancy knew that there were a lot of tremendous expectations and felt a lot of pressure riding on her doing a great job singing that song. So John Barry and the recording engineer on that magnificent song did an absolutely superb "cut and paste" job of stringing together short segments of Nancy singing that song to create a seemless single recording! In fairness to Nancy, she was not used to singing a song that has longer, extended notes. She was used to singing songs like her big hit song, "These Boots Are Made For Walking" which don't require a singer to sing long, extended notes. It is a tribute to how outstanding the recording equipment/technology was back in 1967 when the "YOLT" recording sessions occured, that when you listen to Nancy's beautiful version of that iconic song, you can't tell that Barry and the sound engineer had to string together segments of her vocal performance in order to create that magnificent song! What some people may not realize about how great the recording technology was back then, in 1969 when Barry and the musicians recorded the gorgeously beautiful slow ballad, instrumental version of "We Have All The Time in the World" for the "OHMSS" soundtrack, if you listen to that superb instrumental piece of music wearing headphones, you can actually hear the flute player taking breaths between notes that he or she plays on that recording!!!! In fact at one point during the recording session of Nancy singing "YOLT", Nancy said to Barry, "Are you sure you don't want to bring in Shirley (Shirley Bassey) to sing this song" and Barry responded, "Nancy we want your sound"!
@QTheMusicShowАй бұрын
thanks Michael. :) I'm aware of all that, but thank you for sharing! Have you read Jon Burlingame's book The Music of Bond? It is the bible of Bond music. I had to go and just refresh my memory - but in it, a reporter who was at that session was quoted as saying "Nancy must have sang it 30 times" and John Barry is quoted as saying "the final version was about 25 takes cut together". But - you know, point remains the same either way! Thanks again for the comment. Defo check out that book!

Battle . He told is... a-rad- a-plat on the drums... it looks up at his face, ... the soldier's wife asked, Thru the dusk, "why did the snake pause, look up at you?" Her love 's answer, Because he knew--one of us, because he was big (14) rattles, must die." She said , that through beachside dusk light, there is no address more beautiful than that of his ..nobility plus knockout tattered handsome he was. 25 minutes, they fought for their life and food. He and the rattler danced. Sparks flew from the shovel. A real warrior, as well as the snake! It ...was..he knew , looking, one of us must die.
