The beginning of "Channel 11 News at Ten," on WPIX in New York City. WPIX was an independent station, but today is a CW affiliate. On the topic of affiliations, that November they announced they'd join the new WB network; The WB's chief exec Jamie Kellner passed away last month.
Speaking of passings, the top story is on the death of Drazen Petrovic, a 28-year-old from Croatia who had a 4-year NBA career and an FFL career in his native Europe. Petrovic died in a car accident in Bavaria that evening. Jerry Girard would have reports on him later in the show.
The anchors are Kaity Tong and Jack Cafferty, the aforementioned Jerry Girard with sports and Bob Harris with weather, plus reporting is Laurel Fairworth. In other news, the anchors look at the NJ Governor's Race, a Newark truck accident, and Marvin Scott going aboard a Russian warship.
The graphics were done by Telezign, same company that did WBAL circa 1990, and WCIX post-CBS affiliation switch. The graphics were an early example of flashy tabloid, and I don't think WPIX used them well. It's not one of my favorites from them. Everything was replaced that fall with a flatter design that looked much better.
The news theme is called "Ten O'Clock News" and was composed by Bob Sakayama. Tribune voiceover legend Doug Paul (RIP) voices the news open.
