During the games, WPVI is running a midnight edition of Action News to compete with WCAU's delayed late newscast. It's not a full newscast, but rather a condensed six minute update of top stories, weather, and sports. It feels like a GMA cutin, only longer, meatier, and presented by Jim Gardner.
The idea is that if you're watching the Games, but prefer Action News to NBC 10, you can switch over to Channel 6 and watch them and not miss any of the games. Whether this is a good idea is up to you - it feels kind of questionable to me, honestly, because the coverage doesn't always end at midnight. Moreover, Action News is so entrenched that anyone who wanted to see it likely clicked over at 11 regardless. It's not an ABC corporate move - 6 seems to be the only O&O who did it - so why they're doing it is anyone's guess.
Here's highlights of the update.
