Opioid addiction is destructive across all demographics. But compared to men, women’s addiction can have more devastating implications. Some children are born addicted, while others face uncertain futures because of addicted mothers. Many children are placed in foster care, but an increasing number are being raised by extended family - further disrupting lives. WQED continues its Emmy© Award winning “Hope after Heroin” project with a compelling new documentary exploring how opioid addiction among women is breaking the family bond and changing the fabric of society.

I'm a 39 year old father. I have custody of my 2 children. They stay with my mom at this time while I too am dealing with my addiction like their mother, the only difference is I still take the time to see them every day- it's been eight years since she decided on her own she didn't want to see them, there is nothing stopping her except herself. They haven't seen their mom or heard from her 1 time in over 7 years, her choice, I haven't kept them from her. My son turned 10 and my daughter turned 15.

Detroit Fetty Ghost: that is a sad story about your children's mother abandoning her children for drugs, but it happens all the time. Better than the mother selling or "renting" her kids for drugs which also happens. For addicts, drugs take first priority always, especially heroin addicts. There is no love stronger than an addict's love for their drugs.

As a single mother and recovering addict the best thing you can do for them is let them know that addiction is just like a illness and unless you see a doctor you have little to no chance to recover, I know it’s frustrating but try not to demonize her and let them understand that her choices to stay away may have been best for everyone until she gets help. I pray that she does get help and I pray that you and your children are blessed because it’s a very hard thing to watch your kids yearn for her presence and that’s something you can’t fix no matter how hard you want to and nothing that’s happened is their or your fault! These two men are heroes in my eyes. The mother of the children is trying too. That's the horrible thing with addiction. It's a lifelong disease that can make the sweetest, most caring person do unspeakable things. All she can do is do better, and that's extremely difficult for an addict. It's hard for everyone involved, but children of addicts have it the worst. They didn't ask for this life, and if you're born addicted the odds of you having a normal life go down dramatically. It's not fair. But that's life.

Man I was a teenage mother, now I’m a struggling single mother with 5 years of sobriety still trying to get back on my feet in California where the cost of living, gas and food is impossible for people like me to actually have hope for the future! Women like myself are feeling this hopeless and our turning back to those addiction they have been fighting to conquer and I really don’t know how to move forward but this life is worth the pursuit over what I was doing to myself and my children in my addiction! These men are amazing...Thank god for families who stick together.My mother stepped up when I was young an on drugs to raise my 9 yr old.I am now 5 years clean and have a baby on the way and raising my 3yr old daughter.I have to remind myself everyday that the way I use to live is a path to destruction and the good time is temporary.I am grateful for the strength to keep moving on without looking back.I won’t forget the pain I endured because it keeps me from going back.

I was 16 living in the ghetto when I got pregnant. I NEVER did drugs while I was pregnant with my first or any of my 3 children after. I never even abused drugs because I learned from my mother's mistake. I thank God for the strength and I will never understand how someone could use drugs while having another living being inside of them. I'm sorry. I'm sympathetic for the babies.

That's the question I have been trying to answer for 20 + years and I still do not have an answer to this question. If you can do it, I can do it - saying no to drugs at all costs - then how does anyone have an excuse to lay their hands down and take drugs is beyond me - it's such a terrible excuse for their soles - does any druggie that dies from an over-dose go to heaven? I've seen many druggies get clean - but those that don't and die - terrible.

My brother is an addict, as well as his two oldest sons, who are in their 20s. My nephews were raised with addiction between my brother and their alcoholic mother. My nephews have been in and out of jail many times. They are very angry and do not accept help. The future looks bleak.

Agreed. Some years ago I had an ear infection caused by my horrible habit of scratching the inside of my ears with pointy objects. I had throbbing pain and there was pus coming out, so the doctor prescribed an opioid that made me feel IN HEAVEN. I felt like I was being hugged by a warm cloud of love and serenity. I finished the whole box, even thought it wasn't necessary anymore. Some months later, my mom broke the root of a tooth and the dentist prescribed the same medication after she had surgery. She didn't finish it, though. So I finished it for her. She didn't even notice, because it's common for Brazilians to keep a RIDICULOUSLY BIG amount of medication at home. I swear to God...after 10 pills or so I couldn't feel any effects. That's how fast I built resistance. I didn't need such strong medication. I had already spent 5 days with throbbing pain without taking anything before I went to the doctor.

I've been sober for just over 6 years from shooting heroin which of course started with pain meds, then when the oxycontin boom hit i was doing those, then onto heroin. The only thing that would make me relapse would be seeing one of those green 80's again. But thank God they haven't been made for several years now, but im sure someone has some stored away.

It's much easier to get Medicaid (health insurance for the poor) for children. In some states--Republican ones, of course--it's ONLY the children who can get it, while in ones like Washington State, where I live now after about 30 years in Idaho and no insurance. I was just so amazed that they had a program to help poor adults that actually paid for mental health treatment and addiction treatment. Prior to that time I'd been diagnosing myself, especially my chronic mental health issues, guessing what might be the best drug I could afford, then ordering it from overseas, waiting a month to see if it worked, and if not, I'd listen to the ads on the TV study the Physician's Desk Reference, the Bible of medications for all diseases, and try again. Because it's actually easier to get Medicaid, at least in liberal states, to pay for both inpatient and outpatient treatment, and for those like me who self-medicate with alcohol and illegal drugs on top of prescriptions, when I wound up in long-term (60-180 days) treatment in the only hospital in the state that took patients like myself, who needed to be treated both for addiction and mental illness--in my case dysthymic depression, a fairly low-level chronic form of depression that shows up for most people in puberty. Since that was also the time my life was not going well--my parents were on the brink of divorce, my mother was suffering with something, most likely bi-polar illness, which did run in her family. That was during the 1960s, long before there were any anti-depressants or anti-bi-polar medication that were effective. Also, I'd been diagnosed bi-polar myself, since it was the most common diagnosis in alcoholics and addicts. And the medications hadn't worked for me. Finally, in that hospitalization, probably about my tenth that either was brought about by a suicide attempt or something related to my drug addiction. At that time I had been primarily a heroin IV user from 1971 to the late 1980s. The doctor, who was also an alcoholic in recover and a great doctor at working with the new medications that were coming out. What he told me was, "Of course you have to use opiates, because they dumb your feelings. Your mental illness makes you feel bad all the time, and the only was you can treat that is with drugs that take that horrible feeling away so that you can have a chance to fight your mental health problems." What I also discovered was that my lifestyle, brought on by my living in the streets as a criminal and thief, set me up for further victimization with PTSD. It had looked like mania but I managed to stay in treatment long enough to do some experimenting to find what worked for me. In the end, it turned out that I needed a major anti-depressant along with an opiate-substitution drug. I have been clean and sober for 14 years, finished up work in a demanding field and retired after my lungs and heart began to give out, along with . For me to still help others, stay in cardio-pulmonary and physical therapy, this is what I need to do. And I don't allow anyone to shame me or make my decisions for me. When I became pregnant accidentally while on methadone, I was strongly encouraged to terminate the pregnancy, which I did. Many years later I could probably have had a successful pregnancy. The reasons I aborted still were valid, as they I was far from ready to be a mother, especially a single mother.

2000$ a day is not realistic no matter what you've heard. 200$ a day during detox for 5 days is average. Then it cuts down to roughly 100$ a day for the next 14-21 days per day. These are average figures for average rehabs. And Insurance and Grants for the uninsured are available to ALL in America and Canada. Most JUST DONT WANT HELP. I'm 39 and been addicted to heroin for 20 years. I'm still addicted. I've been to rehab 27 times. Rehab does NOTHING unless you 110% already do not want to quit. Sorry to everyone who thinks I'm a jerk but I'm telling the truth which people seem to be allergic to anymore.

Ummm, adoption is a good thing otherwise those children are left in foster care while they wait for mom or dad to get sober, most often until they age out. Don't shame the parents who selflessly choose to adopt out their children. The reason we have so many kids in foster care is because of the "mission" of wanting kids and parents kept together. Sure it's ideal but it's not realistic!

Not judging these mothers, BUT take precautions, so you DON'T get pregnant. Saving the baby, all this pain and trauma, and the families, and professionals, that have to take all the responsibility. Take the drugs, as they have a right to decide, but the carnage it leaves behind, is beyond unfair.

Yes this woman is vary lucky. I just dont understand this . My wife and i were full blown herion addicts. We snorted it the addiction is not as hard but we got pregnant . My wife almost right away got help and we got clean . Thank god my daughter had no symtoms of withdrawals. But what im gettin at is why couldnt she get help . My wife would of killed herself if are baby was messed up due to dope . I hope this woman feels like shitty every single day . She dont deserve those kids .she had 2 other kids she knew how important it is to stay clean . Smfh shes trash sorry but its true. God bless dad and uncle they are good men.

These people need to be held accountable for the damage they CHOSE to do to innocent children/babies. A minimum 10 year prison, no parole if a baby is born addicted. Period! If they relapse, sterilize them. Period! I'm sick of seeing our tax dollars supporting these people. I'll give every dime for the innocent children. The addict gets housing, food, utilities, transportation, medical aid, legal aid, etc. Its a free ride because they CHOSE to be a druggie and the system enables them instead of truly holding them accountable. Enough is enough. Like these two men, I also found myself taking custody of two children due to a drug abused mother. I know what they're going thru.

It sounds like you have a right to be angry. As a non addict I always have trouble with those feelings of blaming them and feeling sad for them and empathetic and that they don't have the right to do this to anyone else so... It's messy. You're a good man to stay the course!

I think that mother of 3 will end up sabotaging and getting in her own way simply from the fear of rejection or not being able to live up to the care and quality of life her kids have now w/father and uncle. But I don't think they'll want to give them back anyway.
