WRAL-TV "Action News 5" Open - 1982

This is a recording from the first-ever hour-long edition of "Action News 5" at 6 p.m. Recorded in June 1982. All copyrights acknowledged.

I was the director of this newscast. The headlines was pre-recorded about 15 minutes prior to the newscast. At 6, Master Control rolled that tape and then gave "control" to control room number 2 at that point. I then rolled the opening (earth spinning) from TCR, dissolved to camera one as it trucked left to right and then dissolved to camera 2 for Charlie. The move that camera one executed was actually a difficult shot.

Control Room Director I don’t doubt this was your show... but I do notice Charlie is looking at 1 on the trucking shot, then is already looking at 2 when you dissolved to it. Also, 1 would have to cross in front of 2 to make this all work - not sure how big the camera well was at this point. Incredible open regardless of how it was executed.

Wow ... I always knew WRAL had always been a classy operation (it was practically the only station I watched when I was at Carolina). But this open almost looks major-market in quality. Then again, back then the Charlotte and Raleigh stations (with the notable exceptions, in both cases, of the NBC affiliates) had pretty high production values.

@rmg1204 Hello rmg1204...Bob was actually complimenting the cam operator on executing a difficult move. I was the director of this newscast and the anxiety level was high for this first newscast.

The expanded edition of Action News 5 from 1982. The woman coveraging the head story was Ann Devlin and the top anchor was the legendary Charlie Gaddy who was at the helm of the WRAL Newscast from 1969-1994. And speaking of this segment from 1982 is sportscaster Tom Suiter,who has been at WRAL since 1971,and to this day is a legend in the Triangle area when it comes to sports!!! And the time Channel 5 was the ABC affliate until 1985.

Correction - Charlie Gaddy started at RAL in 1970 but did not become the main anchor until '74.

yep, I remember the switch over. I was nine years old and thought it was the end of the world. Took a while to get used to.

The general NC tax rate is 4.75% with local taxes in most counties adding another 2% for a total of 6.75%. All permanent sale tax increases happened before Governor Perdue took office. The only tax hike under Governor Perdue was the temporary 1% hike that took effect on 1/1/11 and expired 7/1/11. So why are you blaming her? Just because she's a Democrat?
