Steel Wool... As an Army brat in Bolivia 1953-1955. I watched an artisan finish mahogany tables and chairs with progressively finer steel wool and oil by hand. The result was amazing and I never forgot the finish you get with fine steel wool and oil. Thanks for all the great videos.

I'm a professional window cleaner, steel wool is the go to for clean windows. if you try it, make sure you use the steel wool with a liquid to act as a lubricant(dawn, joy, ajax, etc.......)then squeegee off................... perfection!

I have quite the extensive collection of Gransfors Bruk axes, hatchets, mauls and wedges. You can accept full responsibility for that little gem in my life Cody. I've spent countless hours while working overseas watching your channel as it's full of great material and life lessons. It also passes the time away from home that I spend peering out my window at the 3rd world countries that I inhabit as I day dream and plan projects and goals on my own small chunk of 7 acres in Eastern Virginia. Thanks for all you do and be well friend.

A boy scout recipe for waterproofing anyi has work great for me on wood ends. Old boots and fabric waterproofing. Melt 16oz beeswax with 8oz of boiled linseed oil then add 8 oz of turpentine. Stir as it cools. Once set up. Apply liberally and apply heat to area. Heat gun works great. I've also waterproofred hats as well.

Great video Cody - my splitting axe could do with a clean up for certain, will get some linseed oil on it too. I use Lincoln Neatsfoot oil here in England. It’s bone meal based and excellent for leather. I use it on all my leather outdoor stuff and if you can get your hands on some in the states you might well add it to what you have already. Yeah the axe videos are some of my favourites - thanks!

Maybe I will regret it.... I am using walnut oil to oil leather, and at the moment I am thinking of using beeswax and a hairdryer to wax the outside of the sheath on my brand new Gransfor Bruk hand hatchet sheath, to harden it, and use a cool fabric glue to glue the floppy end of the sheath. That could fail when I later oil the inside only. I thought of this when I saw people using Brazil nuts to oil wood. Hmm....

You got it right. Keep on doing as long as you can. At 74 I can still do what I did at 34! It might take me a little longer, but I can still do it. Nice tips on keeping your tools in shape. Learning how to take care of things (sharpening, oiling, maintaining, etc.) is how I fell in love with this channel. It's always good to see these kinds of videos. One question: do you still recommend sand paper for those tools you get that come with a coat of varnish? I was looking forward to doing my handles in the fall just like you said you used to do every fall and I have several that need the varnish removed.

Cody I am 56 years old and still enjoy Dirt biking, Mountain biking, Kayaking, diving, etc etc etc. The problem that I have run across is the women that I meet my age are old and ready to die. I am still single and have never been married because of this. I have always made good money but refused to hoard it when you don't know if you will see tomorrow. This is not a trait that women look for. Most want to sit on the sofa and watch TV. You are one of the lucky ones that found someone early in life that enjoys living. (maybe its because she was not raised like American women) You are lucky my friend!!

I make my own. Heat 4 tablespoons beeswax, two tablespoons virgin unrefined coconut oil, one tablespoon black seed oil(cumin seed oil), one tablespoon lemon balm oil. Mix well and allow to harden. Great for treating leather, wood, steel, boots, canvas. I treat myKnives, knife sheaths, axes, rifles, pistols, you name it. When you're finished, rub into your hands and face and any other parts of your body thats dried or chapped. I make this stuff and hand it out as gifts to friends and family. People love it. I do use BLO initially on all wood in multiple applications until saturated but after that, all I own gets this natural balm once annually. This natural balm does not spoil or turn rancid. I never have issues with mold, dry rot or rust. I also use it on my wood shop tools, planes, saws, bench vises etc.

Rags soaked with linseed oil pose a fire hazard because they provide a large surface area for rapid oxidation. The oxidation of linseed oil is exothermic, which may lead to spontaneous combustion. The worst thing you can do is put them in an airtight container (unless it is fireproof). Definitely not a zip lock bag. After starting a fire in a garbage can, I read up on it.

Considering that the tanning process is designed to remove natural oils, fats and moisture, it becomes a good way to prematurely breakdown the leather by re-adding "oils". Suppleness is not always a desired trait in tanned leathers. Stiffness in hiking boots will add support, suppleness in your purse is nice. You are much better suited to find waxes that preserve and protect without breaking down the leather or stitching. Sure, Ballistol is a wonderful product, I love the stuff, but it won't become intimate with my leather gear. Sno-Seal is one that comes to mind that is excellent for keeping leather in pristine condition. Ask a good boot manufacturer what they recommend, unless they've come up with some synthetics that don't start to break down the leather you'll most likely get an answer that avoids oils.

you need a vintage Snow and Neally axe. I have heard they have been bought by an Amish family after having some financial issues in the last few years (apparently quality is back up and all made in USA now. my 3-4 axes from them are over 15 years old and made before the changeover. They are fantastic and beautifully built. I have a husdon bay camp axe, a full size 3lb and a smaller 1and1/3 i think, slightly smaller standard axe. You definitely need to try and revew them.
