Now that I know it really makes me realize what China does to the United States do they not have their own brains to make their own products? Or do they do this on purpose just to try to hurt our companies.? I mean what kind of craziness is that Steeler chainsaw sharpener and sell it themselves and use KZbin creators videos to sell it that's just ridiculous why would they do that? How much of that money are they going to make off this I mean come on. I think they do it on purpose just to try to destroy our company's some sort of crazy Chinese China thing. They should be ashamed of themselves I think they've lost face.

Back in the 70's when I was but a young pup on a farm in Kansas, my father bought a John Deere Chain Saw that had (at that time) a unique chain called a "Barracuda" chain. The teeth were at an extreme angle, and near the drive sprocket on the side, was a lever that, when rotated, would move a curved stone, similar to the one inside your tool, onto the chain. It would throw sparks all over, but in a pinch in the field, it would put a quick edge on the teeth and restore the sharpness. As I recall, it was no substitute for performing a manual sharpening job, but it did seem to work rather well. It also seemed to shorten the life of the chain, since I remember my Dad lamenting about having to buy those "special Barracuda chains" for the saw more frequently.

They actually work quite well. It's a different type of chain. Good for someone who pays to have their chains sharpened. The cost of this setup is about the same as buying a chain and paying to have it sharpened 5-6 times without waiting. Most homeowners run their chains until they are blunt and require a large amount of the tooth removed to get to a usable cutting edge.

For a home gamer the Powersharp system is fantastic, almost a must. I have the Oregon bar and chain and the sharpener is from Amazon. The offer still stands if you would like to come up to Stanwood and test it out. I am going to see if I can find a 12" chain and bar for my Ryobi battery saw too. P.S. same person but different account. For some reason my phone got switched to my old original account.....

My take on the Oregon product is that it’s probably okay for homeowners that maybe do 2-3 cords per year. The cutting edge does’t have much meat to it. It doesn’t look like it stays sharp very long. For a typical homeowner that doesn’t want to learn to resharpen the chain, it’s probably great. But a conventional chain will probably cut faster, and retain its sharpness longer.

It's back up on Facebook. I had to do some research because common sense tells me that is not how you sharpen a chain. However, I ran upon an "Oregon System" and now it makes sense. The one on Facebook is not Oregon, it is not the "System" and therefore, will not work the same. You may need to go out and have it removed, again, if you can. Good job with this video explaining all of that.

It’s not just a special chain, you have to have the special bar also. It’s not meant for commercial use and it’s not focused towards the commercial market at all as the pros know how to sharpen regular chains no problem. This is for your guy that uses his Saw once or twice a year. However with that said I have personally run the genuine Oregon set up on smaller saws in the past and it works amazingly, the chain cuts though like a knife in hot butter.

Let me say this....you buy the powersharp bar and chain by Oregon for your saw. Eventhough it is not my cup of tea, it worked very well! I tried it on a ms170 and used it til it was dull and when I lightly put pressure on it it sharpened it very sharp..the down side is the chain doesnt last very long. I guess each thing has its place in this world but Powersharp would not ever take the place of the 72cl or even round ground chain. This is just my take on my own research time, Kev

Just do what my old neighbor used to do. He'd buy a new chain, run it until it got so dull it simply refused to cut anymore, take it off, tear a brand new one out of the package put that one on. Lather, rinse, repeat. Said he didn't have the time to fool around sharpening chains. Had one of those blue plastic drums in his garage filled with dull once used chains. Probably put his Stihl dealer's kids through college.

The physics for this concept is all wrong with most chains. The taper of the tooth is designed to create a force that draws the whole bar and chain in so that the next tooth can take a full bite of wood. Using that counterfeit sharpener creates a whole different plane on the top of the cutting surface that works against being able to cut quickly or smoothly. So save your money to either purchase the special bar, chain, and sharpener, or buy a sharpener where the physics makes sense.

I think that putting that thing open next to the chain on the bar and just looking at it without running the saw should suffice. Maybe running the chain a few inches by hand. It's not like it's surgery. Also, the blades are basically standard among manufactures. The guide is the same in the same saw class and you can easily swap blades and chains. I mean if the tensioner doesn't bring the chain to the right tension or the blade wobbles even if well tighten only then it can be said it's incompatible.

The issue is that not every bar is going to have the holes drilled in the bar to properly locate the sharpener, and Oregon's website lists over half a dozen tail mounts for bars. Incidentally, this uses the A041 tail mount fairly common for electric/battery chain saws.

It seemed to work well on the poulan saw he had, but it wouldnt work on my MS261cm, or my 201TCM. I probably could have tried it out on my 200T because the sugi bar i had on it seemed to be compatible, in that the nose tip had an additional hole in it that fit the jig.

didn't realize this was about counterfeiting, i was looking for someone to come out and confirm that this process it itself is deeply flawed, i've been working on and using chainsaws since the 60's and in the early 70's one of the big sellers of saws came out with a built in version of this process, it died out when people started realizing this doesn't work long term, the top of the teeth has to have clearance for the tooth to cut, it must be ground on the front of the tooth. this thing in short order makes the top of the tooth flat, there is no more clearance for the tooth to dig in, go to harbor freight and buy a proper sharpener that sharpens on the front

@@Big-Bubbler agreed, however, I was there in the business when that happened and the fact that it didn't survive the test of time proved that basic principals of physics can't be side stepped, time has proven that their idea of increasing the angle of the top of the tooth was trumped as soon as enough of the metal had been removed to create a flat spot, no different than if someone tried to apply this idea to any other cutting tool. I moved to the machinist trade and spent the last 43 years of my career there in all phases of that industry and have yet to find any cutting process where zero degrees clearance angle will work

@@jayjackson597 I'd say it works. It is not the best way for someone who does a lot of cutting. OK for the person who just cuts a few trees a year or less and does not want to learn or spend the time to do it right.

I use a dremmel and 7/32 stones for 50 years. My saws cut nice big chips and I'm well satisfied. the old dremmel still hanging in there. As for me I am 76 and I'm the one going down hill. 😊

Hi Cody, Thank you for this video, I have a small chainsaw that fits on the end of a pole for cutting small branches (nothing bigger than 5 inches (12.7 cm) and did not know about needing a special bar or chain. I only use it very infrequently, say about twice or three times a year and thought it might be a good item to have before I saw your video.

The controversy isn't the sharpener... it's the chain. People are trying to use this on OEM chains, and it's not made for that. It's made SPECIFICALLY for the Oregon Powersharp chain. OEM chisels DO NOT WORK with the Powersharp sharpener. The chisels on Powersharp chains ONLY are designed for this sharpener.

My dad bought it for 40$, not gotten it from the mail. Said it was delivered. Nada, either someone stole it, or it's just some fart in the wind.

NEVER buy counterfeit products regardless of how low the price is. Seriously, it hurts lots of people involved in making the original product.

Whether that one works or not, I think somebody should take that idea and re-design the chainsaw chain so that becomes the standard come out there’s no reason they can’t reshape the teeth to be ground from the top and I have a device like that or even some thing on the internals of the chainsaw lever that you pull that has a spring loaded stone that will hit the chain for a few seconds and sharpen it or even an automatic sharpening a chain. Whether that one works or not I think the idea is brilliant and the entire industry should change, and the big companies should just go with it. Can you imagine buying a brand new Husqvarna with a built-in auto chain sharpener you were just gonna Saul do your hearts content and never have to stop and deal with a dull or unevenly sharpen chain again. It’s sad it’s not already the standard.

I have the original one. It worked well but that was before I learned how to sharpen chains. I haven’t used it in a long time. I would be willing to part with it if you would like to use it.

I'm glad I came here for the review before wasting my money! Saw the magic sharpener on ebay and was like: "Why bother with manual filing or the dremel grinder any more?" -- But, yes I was skeptical too, especially the way that sharpening stone is setup on the tip??? Thanks Wranglestar for enlightening us to the fact that it requires a special chain and maybe even a special bar to make the system work!!! and who knows if the counterfeit ebay chinese plastic junk that usually brakes after a few uses is even compatible with the stuff that they are copying it to be used for?

There's at least 10 of the cheap copies as well as the original on Amazon uk, the Oregon is only with the replacement bar or bar plus chain. The rip off don't even say you need a special bar and chain.
