My father always taught me, that if you are loaned a tool, it should be returned in better condition than you got it. Borrowed a lawn mower once from a neighbor, replaced a blade that was chipped and dull on it and returned it with a full tank of gas. It's a matter of respect and common decency.

I have always had a valve on the opposite end from where I'm picking up the diesel fuel from my tank at the lowest point that allowed me to pitch the tank slightly away from the pickup end and then always be able to drain off the water that accumulates in there from condensation in the tank and etc. I assume that's what the valve you removed was for, can't explain the chain though that must be a west coast thing Haha! Keep up the good work.

Living in the woods and doing lots of different jobs teaches me lessons everyday. Adjusting the forks, learning how was one of Cody's lessons today. And, every task I do is regularly rethought; can I do it better, faster, more efficiently, etc. Thinks makes like interesting and often fun. My father was one of the real experts in his field. One of his lessons to me was that on a good day, you learned something. And, he tried to learn from even the mundane jobs. Now, I am headed back out to work on my firewood stack for a few winters from now.

The Gordian knot is pretty funny. Did something kind of similar when I had to chage a pinion seal in a one ton van. The nut was on so tight that even with the e-brake and blocks on the wheels I would turn the wheel and I would turn the pinion and it wouldn't break loose but the tires would crawl over the blocks. Fortunately my brother called me and interrupted and when I told him the problem he laughed, "Duh, put a pipe wrench on the yoke and then take a crack at the nut." Sometimes the most simple escapes us.

When you put a new cable into equipment, try to clamp the outer rubber layer in the little clamping device, instead of the wires itself. So if you pull on the cable, you're not pulling on the wires. Just a lesson I had to learn myself a while ago.

That cord shorting reminded me of something similar that happened to me when I was about 10 years old. I learned to cook at a young age because I wanted to make pancakes on Saturday morning before my parents wanted to get out of bed. I used an electric fry pan that had a cord that detached from it. It had the temperature control on it. One time when I plugged it in, the cord shorted where it went into the temperature control, and this white flame shot out of the plastic box. It startled me, but I reached over and pulled the plug out of the wall. Right when I did, some plastic from the control box splattered, and a small bit almost went into my eye. By the grace of God, I blinked (because it made a noise when it splattered), and the little blob of molten plastic burned my upper and lower eyelids right on the edge, but my eye was untouched. Thank you, Jesus!

At best you blame your firends when they fail years later, at worst you get in a fight right away because the damage is obvious and they deny it cause if they could replace em easily, they might not have borrowed them but bought their own. I quit lending tools a long time ago, if they really need something done i go there and do it myself for a small fee or some beer, works way better and everyones happy ;)

If you unlatch the slide locks on the skid steer forks, it is possible to slide the back and forth by resting one fork on a block or stump (preferably something stationary) and turn the machine left to move the fork right, left to move it right. This is all done with the forks attached to the machine. It sounds complicated but it is fairly simple. Oh, and make sure the sliders are greased.

I wound up with two sets of forks for that exact reason. One set from an earlier machine was too tall of a backstop and I couldn't use it basically. The other set was super beefy and had a large round bar the forks were mounted to and the backstop was short and easy to get in and out. Those were always what i picked.

I wish someone would invent a new cord stress point system ... and better switches .... went out to make one small cut on the table saw today and it started, groaned, then died ... then couldn't find any of my 3 electrical sniffers to test the line to motor ... lucking the switch went out 2 years ago and I bought 2 replacements (they're cheap) ... popped the other new one in and was back in business, then went in and ordered another one .... Cody I have found the 3M stretchy self sticking tape to work well on temp shoring up of cords (if you do it before the wire gets too stressed) love that 3M stuff ... right up there with lock tight ... BTW, love the Paint job on the tank ... it should help make fueling easier and no humping cans of diesel

Old rail road locks had a bail on them for the chain to prevent loss. I wonder if that was the purpose for the chain on your drain valve for a lock to prevent "unauthorized" use.

Cody, you should incline your diesel tank slightly so water and sludge drops to the rear drain plug. Set the tank away from the wall enough to allow access to that drain so you can occasionally empty and purge the nasty stuff out of your fuel storage.

We always picked the best edge of the beam and measured off it on two sides (never 3 or 4) at both ends, then snapped an ink line down the length on those sides as 'datum'. Beams are never square. English Oak frame joinery.

Cody, with the forks on. Lift them and tilt them forward all the way until the fork tines are vertical, then jump out with the forks raised (not recommended by non-professional homeowners) and spread them apart that way. Makes it a whole lot easier.

I forget what brand it was, but their door slid UP into the cab, allowing you to operate the machine with the door open or closed, and it could be opened or closed at any time, no matter where the arms were.

I take the skid steer back to the dealership and tell him to take the swing out door off and put a rollup door on that way you can get into and out of the vehicle with the loader up off the ground and not have to fight the door to do it

If you weren’t a professional homeowner, you’d have a helper who could adjust the forks while you’re in the cab. I once had to take the tracks off my bobcat loader, and I asked how I was supposed to lift the new tracks onto the idlers, since they weigh like 500# each. I was told, “just use another machine to fork them on there.” Hmm.

When you said the Cat is warming up it made me think of a story that happened a few years back. Some friends and i had an offgrid property that had a shipping container on it for storage. Well somehow it got locked and we couldnt get to the lock with bolt cutters... with a live cat (feline) inside. We immediately realized it and started trying everything to get it open with no success. It had to be 90 degrees outside so time was of the essence. A local welder came out with his rig and was about to start torching the lock off but first we told him there was a cat inside. His response was "is it running?" and everyone started laughing. Ever since we have made jokes about it. The cat got out safe.

Cody - if your new toy has side shift you can use a block of wood or something alike to rest one fork at a time and slide over the forks to widen or narrow one at a time without getting out of the seat. Used to do that all the time with out BIG 10' long forks at work.

We purchased a Kubota SVL 90-2s track loader mainly because of the door exit issue. Emissions has been the only issue we've had...thankfully under warranty though I hear the 65-2 and 75-2 don't have DPF fluid. Takeuchi also has a slide up door. Pros and cons to everything. If I may be so bold to suggest that once you choose the final placement of your tank, you build a sealed containment basin in case you have a fuel leak. In my 20+ years work experience in the marine and commercial fuel business all tanks will leak the questions are when and how much. Your irrigation system may cause a spill to contaminate the river, and that will be a major problem both ethically and financially. In my job fines for contamination of any waterway started at $50,000.00 plus the cost of clean up. Better safe than sorry.

An easy way to move forks: find or place a 2x4 or 4x4 on the ground. Place elbow of fork on it till it lifts up from the channel. Side shift or turn slightly till fork is where you want it. Lift and go!

About the Gordian knot...I was removing a bolt out the bottom of my car with an impact gun when I got it stuck between the ground and the car. Simple, I thought, just spin the bolt back in! Except....the bolt was stripped and wouldn't thread back in. My jack....was maxed out and couldn't go any higher. So, I had to dig into my driveway to wedge the impact out. First time EVER I was glad I had a gravel driveway!

Hahah gotta hate when that happens. Taking something apart then breaks again shortly afterwards. I deal with this testing servers out sometimes. Pop in new ram and something doesn't work right and have to pull it out take it apart etc. Thankfully we have a new office coming next month which will provide us with a nice place to have a better work bench setup.

Put some flat face couplers onto the tractor as well so you can use the attachments on there as well or make up some adapters. Great work
