The other plus about having a gas truck is no one will question why you sit down to pee. They will just expect it. I would assume Sitting down to pee is more comfortable. But I like diesel trucks and don’t mind being uncomfortable. Or working on them. “Older ones” that is. This comment is a joke, for the ones that don’t get it. Not to be taken seriously.

I love diesels...but they are really impractical unless you plan on doing a lot of HEAVY towing, or, running some really big off road tires and you would rather spend extra on the engine than upgrading your differentials. Of course, we're talking HD Diesels. A "baby" Duramax, Eco Diesel, or the 5 liter Cummins for the Titan XD are a different story. Even so, I agree about fuel availability. Plus, I don't like cold starting issues. As far as the smell...it smells like...VICTORY!!!

@skookapalooza2016
@skookapalooza2016 Жыл бұрын
@@redrustyhill2 Bruh...it's a '95. That's totally uncommon. You've got compression issues, fuel injector issues or mixture issues. One thing you could try is disconnecting your oxygen sensors. The computer should go back to default values. One way you might know it could be the 02 sensors is if you put the pedal to the floor but get jerky acceleration. It might do it at high RPM's. Your diesel starts at -15? Try that with a tank full of #2 Diesel. You'd better have some Diesel 911 on-hand. My point being, that you don't necessarily know what's in the gas station's tanks, especially at the beginning of the winter season. Even so, to the best of my knowledge, not all #1 Diesel is created equal. Different latitudes may add more or less kerosene to the mix. While that, practically, shouldn't cause any problems... sometimes it does. Obviously, with a gas engine you don't have to be concerned. The fuel should be consistent, year-round, I would think.
@walterwhite2640
@walterwhite2640 Жыл бұрын
"I don't like cold starting issues" is code for I don't understand how glow plugs work. You're supposed to wait until that little squiggly light goes out. That's the light that tell you the glow plugs are heating up. If you don't let them heat to temp, the engine won't start. Turn the key too many times and you'll food the engine and it won't start at all. Glow plugs take a little longer to heat up when it's cold. This is common sense.
@redrustyhill2
@redrustyhill2 Жыл бұрын
@walterwhite2640 not all diesels have glow plugs, actually very few do anymore, and there is alot more issues in cold weather with diesel trucks than gas. Anyone who actually runs diesel powered equipment when its COLD will know that.

You definitely made some valid points. Everyone has different needs and should purchase the vehicle that suits their needs. It always kills me though when I see people buying these giant trucks and they never use them for there intended purpose. People in Las Vegas are awful with that. I concur. I selected a gas engine after overlanding all 48 contiguous states. Learned diesel isn't always availabe. In fact, met with a guy who was stranded because he ran out of fuel in a town with 4 gas stations that didn't offer diesel. Had to give him a ride 60 miles away to get 10 gallons of furel, and then drive him back. For the 2 times a year I need to move my trailer, the gas engine is the way to go.

I drive an old cummins 12v in alaska daily... it takes a little longer to warm up when you start it but hasn't failed me in cold weather when the batteries are actually good. Its loud, its bumpy, but it just keeps purring along and its far easier to fix if anything goes wrong than any of the new trucks. Its a lot easier to justify doing the ball joints or injectors every couple years when you don't have to make a truck payment the size of a mortgage every month and it still gets better mileage than any of my previous gas trucks even tho it can pull a house on command. Its not ego, its frugal and utilitarian. It does what I need when I need it to, the rest of the time its cheaper, and just like any other old tool it requires a little restoration on occasion. If I ever decide to spend 70k or more on a new truck I will probably just take this one to a damn good mechanic and spend that money on making this one new again cause I am far past the point of depreciation and am into appreciation.

I agree with your points on gas over diesel. To spend the extra money on something you don’t need is pointless. I do own a diesel though. This is because I am a farmer and I already keep bulk diesel and corresponding bulk engine oil for diesel engines on my farm. That and I actually have use for the towing capacity of a diesel engine. If this wasn’t the case it wouldn’t be practical. Needless to say I wouldn’t waste the money or go through the extra inconvenience of owning a diesel just so I can tell people I own a DIESEL, for my own ego. Practicality is almost always better. I enjoy your channel. Have a nice day.🤗

I work in an oil change shop and an oil change on a 6.7 powerstroke is right around 130 dollars and if you want fuel filters that’s another 100 dollars and if you want an air filter the specific one the 6.7 take is around 50 dollars so for a general maintenance and you’re supposed to do everything I just listed every other oil change. So you have 1 oil change 100 dollars then the next is 280 dollars. And that’s just general maintenance

Couple things. I agree with pretty much everything you said. Most guys really don’t need a diesel and would be better served with a gas motor. If you’re pulling every day the diesel is the way to go though, there’s nothing better than having 14k lbs behind a new power stroke and going uphill and putting the accelerator down and you accelerate like an empty f150 lol. Diesels in the cold as well.. I’ve never had an issue. Parked my plow truck (6.7 power stroke) outside all winter long with no block heater plugged in and cold started at -10 degrees F no issues. Maybe -30, -40 you’d have problems , but even then I think if you cycle the key a few times there’s not many issues. Run the correct oil for your temperature as well the manual suggests changing it in well below freezing temps.

Where i live may be different, but stil here are my reasons why i think im probably going to buy a disel for my next truck: 1. fuel is much cheaper where i live 2. you are not dependant on electricity, you really only need a starter 3. since you dont need spark, you can drive in deep water with a snorkel, you never know when thats going to be usefull 4. they sound nicer in my opinion 5. all your machinery, tractors, excavators, etc will use disel 6. quite often it is easier to find disel where i live All that being said, i drive a petrol truck

Diesel smell: I agree, it stinks. I have discovered that I am sensitive to certain chemical smells. The detergent aisle in the grocery store makes my eyes sting every time. If I get diesel on my hands or clothes I will smell it for hours, AND it can also kick off a severe migraine headache. I’m in my 40s and only just discovered that I can smell things that no one else in my family can smell. An old wash rag at the kitchen tap will create a “cloud” of odor I can smell from 15’ away. My wife has to press the rag to her nose to smell it. Don’t knock the PROhO’s diesel hate. I completely agree with him.

You list many valid points, and a gas engine makes more sense for me as well. But I'd like to bring up some counterpoints that might favor diesel besides the obvious reasons. You said diesel fuel isn't as available, but in my neck of the Midwest, I've rarely seen a gas station that doesn't also sell diesel. Maybe I haven't noticed, or maybe it's different in some areas. But keep in mind that 'fossil fuels' are being demonized as official policy, and government would likely not ban diesel as long as needed semis burned the stuff, even if/when gasoline is phased out. So, gasoline is far more available FOR NOW. Another point is that if you live or work on a farm, with diesel tractors, combines, equipment, and on-site tanks for them, there's commonality of fuel in SHTF (rules against substituting farm diesel for the highway type otherwise). Also for SHTF, or just ordinary power outages, if you used your truck engine for generating electricity, a diesel can run for many hours on end better than a gas engine. Lastly, if you do plan on storing either on-road or off-road diesel fuel in large quantities, it's not the incredible flammability hazard that gasoline would be.

The one thing that is going to be a noticeable maintenance item is that Ford Turbo inline 4 direct injection motor. The back side of the valves get really dirty with carbon. Lots of KZbin videos on this topic. As soon as I get mine I am gonna install a Catch Can and then possibly a Turbo Relief Valve (plus it makes a cool sound, lol) so that it doesn't throw back pressure into the Turbo and damage it. My dad has a 21' Fusion with that same 2.3L Turbo and it does scoot!

I owned a '04 Diesel Excursion and I totally agree about the cost of maintenance issues. The prestige of that diesel klacking at the stop light and leaving Suburbans in the dust is a real thing. Beyond the known 6.0 issues, tires, oil changes & steering components always needing replacement. I had to have a new steering column installed at 50k! And $100+ for an oil change to do it yourself gets old real fast. I agree with all the financial reasons. But, if you operates a small business and can write off all the diesel costs against it, then it's a no-brainer to Diesel your way out of the car dealer.

Trucks are expensive! No matter what way you wing it, if you want it to last it takes work. Just did a steering rack, CV axel joint, tie rod ends, sway bar ends, radiator, full fluids, plugs, rotors, calipers, brakes all in one month. But damn is it worth it.

Then there’s the aspect of, in the “coming struggle”, fuel resources are gonna be one of the first things cut off. Diesel is the fuel of the military, so you will always have access. If you are going to go diesel, I’d HIGHLY recommend an older diesel too, as they’re easier to work on and simply less “stuff” to break. Stock pile a few of the known issue parts and you’re good to go. You can also use alternative fuels on older diesels in a pinch, which is something you can’t do with a gas engine.
@earlstacey2709

A lot of people who buy diesel trucks don't need one. Cost to buy and maintain a diesel is much higher. What it really comes down to is if you haul with it or not, and if you plan on putting 400k or 500k miles on it. The gas engine won't last as long as the diesel, but if you plan on keeping it only 150k, it doesn't matter. Any gas engine is usually reliable up to and beyond 250k really. So if you're not hauling regularly, diesel is a waste. But, the 6.7 is one of the quietest diesel engine out there, so much better than a lot of older diesels. The 7.3 gas engine sounds like a great engine from what I've heard so far. Probably a better choice for a lot of people. No shame in owning gas engines, as long as they do what you need them to.

To be fair, chewing up brakes and front end components isn't much of a counter argument. If you're buying a 'truck' and can't do your own disk pads and you can't replace your own ball joint components then you have no business owning a truck. Of course, if you buy a new vehicle and are contractually beholden to 'legitimate' mechanic servicing then that's a valid thing, but otherwise, pads are like $60 it's a total non issue. If someone handed me a truck and said "this truck is perfect in every single way but it chews through pads in 20k then I'd just say "guess I'm doing the pads every other oil change."

I run a dairy farm and raise hogs. My truck is a 2005 ram dually with a 5.9 cummins and g56 6 speed manual. I haul animals, and lots of round bales. I also pull a 30’ camper. Could I do that with a gasser, yes. I don’t care. I work on my truck more than I should but I bought it because I can work on it and it’s powerful. Nothing slows it down and I’m convinced if I needed to move my house a few feet my truck would be up for the challenge. No emissions and simple. Keep your modern ford truck. I don’t mind my diesel. In fact I love it. And it’s paid for. The worst part about my diesel is the dodge wrapped around it. 😂😉

But I don't want to run the truck as a daily it starts when it's hooked up to a trailer and it starts most of the time.... I'm like VGG just can't have a good battery.

I would say you are wrong and right, if deisels were old school with mechanical injector pumps, glow plugs and no computer then the deisel is the way to go, but now i agree with you, buy a gasoline engine instead. They dont make bullet proof deisel anymore. I suppose if you got a 6BT from the 90's and installed it in an old F250 or Silverado 2500 would be good idea.

100% agree The EPA complaint diesels are all junk basically We have a Ford 7.3L Godzilla engine box truck now. Works perfect Our mechanic said no one makes a reliable Diesel anymore thanks to the EPA rules. Just buy a 7.3L. So that’s what we’re doing. So once the old Mitsubishi Fuso dies it will be a gas unit. As a business it comes down to economics Ego doesn’t matter it’s about up time A 7.3L is the best bang for the buck for construction etc There a few uses in which a diesel and it’s power is required very few. So unless you need the power get the 7.3l simple / reliable/ fast mechanic turn around on repairs

As someone who is from the UK, diesels were encouraged for fuel efficiency and environmental reasons then the government changed its mind and said it was the devil soo now we get taxed for going into certain cities"London" with diesels, I love a good old diesel, wish there were more petrol pickups and mid size SUVs in the uk though, but a 2.5TD is much more common and much cheaper in the UK Also 2.5 is relatively a common size

I personally can't bring myself to buy a Ford. As a mechanic I hate Fords because they just are designed with a middle finger to anyone trying to work on them. Repairs take longer and are harder. I remember working on a Ford bronco and apparently the engineers were on crack when they designed it because they put the oil filter way up in a spot where you need to get being the wheel well and reach between a few hoses with a long extension. It just sucked.

Diesel availability varies by region, big time. I live in farm country, its ubiquitous out here. Hell i got a 500 gal tank in my tractor shed lol. Repair costs mitigated by self repair. But overall maintenance is lower and reliability, at least pre-mandated emissions, or for farm trucks. All vehicles these days have pretty much inadequate brakes. They're smaller and lighter than ever, rotors are considered as consumable as the pads anymore. Even ford gas trucks warp rotors by end of pad life. The biggest thing that has hurt the diesel market, has been govt regulatory efforts, and excise taxes placed upon diesel engines. The emissions control systems are what destroyed old diesel reliability, coupled with them mandating removing natural diesel fuel pump lube, and adding inferior alternatives. IMO, govt has been long trying to kill diesel, at least st consumer level. Sadly they have been mostly successful. My wife has a diesel chevy cruze, thing has been more reliable than a Toyota mechanically. Hell, the only issues i have had with vehicles in the last 16 years has been with various emissions systems on them.

Here in New Zealand diesel costs 20% less than normal gas. Then it costs less to run a diesel engine over a petrol engine. I run an Isuzu D-Max and have found it very economical to run. I bought it new and have had no problems with it. Only things I've had to change are the brake pads, tires and oil. The price of petrol in NZ is more than double the price it is in the US.
