bo lorenz i agree if you can approach the bench from the sides its the best choice. Also I think it’s better than behind the vise side (option 4) because if the bench is against a wall the grinding side of the grinder will be further away from the wall behind the bench. well I suppose you could always switch the stone to the other side

I agree with option 3. Having the drill press on the corner with the grinder to the side on the side away from the vise. So, you do not have to walk around behind them to use that bench space. Also, it leaves the most amount of space open on the middle of the bench and by the vise.

@@rastamon5969 yeah it's a lot slower. The magic is also in the drill bit. A handful of really high quality carbide or cobalt drill bits can work wonders on hardened steel. I bought this little drill a couple of months ago on Amazon for 75 bucks, free shipped. It was my first drill press and I could not be happier. I already used it with PVC, different types of wood and bits and more recently used it to drill through some 4mm (5/32") piece of metal without problems. So far so good. Great channel, I quite liked the bench build series, gave me a couple of ideas for a similar project.
@843292
@843292 5 жыл бұрын
Cody, (option: all of the above) * Mount the tools on wood (same exact size for each tool) * Make the wood bolt through to the bench, * Make the bolt holes the *same configuration* for the grinder and the drill press (hence the equally sized wood), then * Pick your multiple placement locations (for all 4 options) and drill/bolt through the table. THEN you could change the placement of the tools depending on the need (like Jack's first garage being small and needing all tools front mounted.)

two suggestions, on the holder your grandfather built, take an old innertube and cut strips to glue to eh V section. It will hold items more securely when drilling them. second one is drill a hole i your bench and use hold downs to secure it when you need it up front. You can remove them and set the drill back and out of your way giving you more room to use on the front of the bench.

I purchased this exact drill press about a month ago. It was easy to set up (did not have a bent bolt!), and I had it up and running in about 1/2 hour. Your comment about the chuck feeling a bit gritty: The instructions indicate that the chuck came straight from the machine shop and it needs to be completely cleaned prior to installing it on the press. I cleaned the chuck per instructions and it works smoothly and "grit-free". Also, the manual states that you can remove one or more of the handles if you have a piece of lumber that interferes with the rotation of the handles raising and lowering the press, so maybe it's not such a good idea to lock them in. I've used the press about a dozen times since I purchased it and it has worked flawlessly. For my little DIY workshop, it is perfect until I can afford a much better, much more expensive press.

Thank you! This answered my questions about this tool. Bench grinder on the end, at a 90 degree angle from the drill press. This will allow you to move material around as you want to drill. Don't have them side by side like they sat in the video. This limits your room to utilize your press.

We all need a positive start to today's comments. So go pick up the instruction manual first. (Young people are watching, ya know.) The work bench I use is all steel with heavy angle iron legs. It is 10' long. My son in law inherited it from his Dad. And he lets me use it all I want. The vise is a good, heavy one. Bolted on. Everything else is moved in and out for use or so it can rest out of the way. The drill press and bench grinder are mine. The drill press is a Delta, and is in between yours, in quality, and the similar size one from Craftsman. I am happy with it. I never have need to bolt or clamp it down. These are called bench top drill presses, or something like that to indicate they are not the tall ones that stand on the floor. I am with you. Sometimes you can fight with an item for years before the simple answer comes to mind -- as in the case of installing the drill press levers with Loctite. By watching your videos I have conquored a number of these items. But I would use Blue Loctite more than red. In my world, many things need dismantling at one time or another. But in the mean while, they were secure. Thanks for a good video. Good Sabbath to you and yours.

You hit the nail on the head. Not everyones needs for tools and equipment meets commercial level quality. Starting out, investments and business ideas require a testing phase and something like this drill press can be just that. What it can and cant do is essentially the best review to do, giving the purchaser the leeway in whether or not the product is right for them. A drill press would have helped me make holes into glued wooden blocks for the base of a stand of LED strip light. Instead of using chisels, which at this point I essentially bought for nothing now.

I called Wen and they promptly sent me a new display. Excellent customer service. The press itself works great for my small woodworking shop and I've been very happy with it. The only real gripe I have with it is that the display stays on all the time, which may be why it went out on me. I just unplug the unit when not in use now.

If you mount stuff he may have obstructions in his garage/shop that would leave him having to moving things and put more holes in that nice top. Or what if he decides to buy machines/vise right off the bat and they are bigger? Just a few thoughts.

I would go for grinder on the side behind the vice and the drill on the front on the opposite corner, slightly back from the edge for clearance. Reason 1: the most likely thing you will need the grinder for is for cleaning off burrs and such what. You are more likely to get burrs and such what from cutting the item than you are drilling it PLUS with a drill, you can always touch it with a counter sink bit. Reason 2: the grinder can be operated from multiple angles, what ever you are drilling can only be flat. so say if the bench is pushed against a wall, which is likely, if you have something that is really long, on the grinder you can hold the item vertically where as you will need to have the space either side to be able to use the drill press
@prdoohan
@prdoohan 5 жыл бұрын
Plus with the drill on the corner you can loosen the grub screw in the head, then you can swing the head out over the edge of the bench. You can then drill into the ends of longer material etc which stands on the floor or clamped vertically on the bench end.
