Wrap Your Fridge in Vinyl! - Part 2 of 2

Check out how I wrapped our refrigerator to give it a cool, retro look. Our old fridge quit on us, so when we got this new one, we wanted to add a pop of color. It was fairly simple, and the best part is that it's removable if we ever get tired of it (unlike paint). This is a cool way to update your old fridge and bring a little life into your kitchen.
This is Part 2 where I show you how to start applying your first piece of vinyl, how to wrap around the edges of the fridge, how to seal it down with heat, how to work around curves, and how our finished vinyl wrapped refrigerator turned out!
I got my 60" x 108" piece of gloss light blue vinyl on Ebay. The seller's name was "ezauto-wrap". I'd also recommend finding a bigger felt lined squeegee and grease pencil while you're at it to make the installation a little easier.

i used to place vinyl signs on windows and the best way to put it on is either soapy water or window cleaner then use the squeegee to push the hair bubbles out. Not only is it faster, its also safer to keep it from tearing

Great videos. I ordered my vinyl and will be making over a hand-me-down mini fridge based on your techniques. I also ordered a roll of chrome adhesive auto trim to accent where the 2 colors "meet." I think it will add that finishing touch. I can't wait to get started. Thanks for your inspiration.

Just ordered my vinyl for my fridge. I used paint before and it lasted two years before the the rust began to show again. Hope the vinyl will better. This video is useful.. Ty 💯

+Blaine Brown Thanks! The seams are always the spots where it likes to start peeling, so I wasn't sure how this was gonna go on the fridge door, but the vinyl laid in there really nicely.

i project managed at a signage company, the vinyl applicators would spray soapy water onto the surface then squeegee the vinyl on over the wet surface. fewer air bubbles etc and no dust critters. also, allows for the positioning of detailed graphics etc.

+mascottie Thanks! On a big flat box like this, it's really not too hard to install the vinyl. When I worked at the sign shop, my least favorite thing was wrapping cars with all the curves and seams. But something like this is easy enough for anyone to try.

Have my sound off as the hubby is sleeping but I've thought of getting this same kind of rounded fridge and I'm also thinking of getting a pair of the metal door latches they use on walk in coolers... You next to never find actual fridge latches on eBay and certainly never in pairs so I decided I'm getting the latch like they put on walk in coolers and it looks the same pretty much. Could be an idea to make yours look even better too if you hadn't already thought of the idea.

Hmmm..I came here to get ideas for restoring my 1930s fridge. I was going to paint it and put a giant Raiders decal on the door for the mancave. I think I will wrap that rascal and put the decal on. Eventually I will strip it and put another team stuff on it........Thanks for posting

You're welcome. The good thing about vinyl is that it can be removed if you get tired of it or decide to paint later on.

Good job. Another option would be to use plastidip, a rubberised removable spray paint product.

Yes you can. The sides of this fridge were actually textured. Just make sure to press tight with your squeegee and it should be just fine.

Love your work! Looks absolutely amazing. Was searching for info to put strip of vinyl across the front of a stainless steel fridge. This to hide an area of finger prints of a wheelchair user who has limited hand function. Do think it would work for this?

You have more color options with Vinyl than you do paint. Paint is dead.

how long does this last? Do I need to be careful when its time to clean the outside of the fridge please?

It's pretty durable and should last a long time as long as you take care of it. I imagine we could get 5+ years out of it no problem unless we accidentally gouge it with something sharp or just get tired of it. It's inexpensive and fairly easy to reinstall a new piece though. It can be removed at any time too and shouldn't leave any adhesive. If it does, it cleans off with rubbing alcohol pretty easy. You can clean it just like the rest of the fridge. The only part we've had to be a little careful about is where the vinyl meets the lip of the hidden handle/pull on top of the door. I didn't clean/degrease that lip as good as I should have before applying the vinyl, so it came a little loose and I accidentally tore it one day while holding something in my hand. So when we grab the door, we try to not disturb that little cut on top. There's actually adhesives you can buy for installing vinyl around edges to keep it from lifting if you wanted to be extra sure that it stays in place. (They use it on car wraps to keep the vinyl from peeling at the edges from the wind and elements while driving.) Most fridges are not designed like ours with the hidden handles though, so I don't think that would be an issue on a fridge that has a regular handle mounted on the door.

I found mine on Ebay. The price varies depending on what size you need. I don't remember now if I said in the video, but I think it was about $30-40. The ebay seller I bought mine from was "ezauto-wrap".

You are using some calendered vinyl and your say that wrinkles are not bad, they are, and when you cut edges out, then it is not all about round them over, and why you are not using some heater?
